An Elizabeth, Illinois woman, who has previous convictions from other crimes in Wisconsin, has been sentenced to 16-and-a-half years in prison for killing her infant son last May. On Feb. 1, 2018, Elizabeth M. Roen, 27, of Elizabeth, Illinois pled guilty as part of a plea agreement to the charge of Aggravated Battery: Great Bodily Harm, which is a Class X Felony. As a result of her plea of guilty, Ms. Roen was sentenced by Judge William A. Kelly to 16.5 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections. She will serve 85% of her sentence and upon her release; Roen will be on Mandatory Supervised Release (formerly known as parole) for three years. She will also be required to register under the Murder and Violent Offender against Children Registration Act. The charge Ms. Roen pled guilty to indicated she knowingly caused great bodily harm to “T.L.”, a child under the age of 13 years, in that she covered the mouth and nose of “T.L.” with her hand, which resulted in the suffocation and death of “T.L.”. Roen’s prior convictions in Grant County, WI include two counts of child abuse in 2009 and a sex crimes conviction in 2010, which led to her having to register as a sex offender. The 2009 conviction stems from an investigation in the Village of Livingston, WI, involving Roen’s two-year-old daughter. According to the 2009 criminal complaint, Roen, then 19, told investigators she had turned on the tap in the bathtub, which came out cold at

Jo Daviess County Democratic Central Committee Chair resigns Since recently learning that at the April 2018 Illinois Democratic Convention County Chairs will be reinstalled or newly installed, and after numerous discussions with Vice Chair Kate Freeman regarding a smooth transition of power, I have decided to resign my position as Chair of the Jo Daviess County Democratic Central Committee effectively immediately. All duties and responsibilities now transfer to Vice Chair Kate Freeman. I have dedicated the last four years to this organization, the last two as Chair. It has been one of the most challenging and rewarding positions
I have had the pleasure of holding. However, if we are to advance this organization to the level to succeed, it is time to hand the ball to the next leader. The Chair position is too much for one individual to handle if we are striving for success. I have reached the point that I can no longer dedi-
cate the time and energy needed to guarantee success and manage the other responsibilities in my life. The Chair position is an extremely high energy and exhausting position if done right. All volunteers should be commended for their commitment to the citizens of Jo Davies County. We have worked hard and moved

the ball down the field. I believe it is time for the next Chair, along with the Precinct Leaders and other volunteers to pick up the ball and score in November. I intend to remain available to assist you in any way needed. Until then, I wish you the best.-John Freitag
