Wildcats bounce back with a pair of exciting wins
By Trenten Scheidegger
CORRESPONDENT
After the River Ridge Wildcats got off to a slow 1-2 start, the boys’ basketball team bounced back with a pair of wins that went down to the wire. On Tuesday, Nov. 29, the Wildcats trav eled to face off with the Polo Marcos. At 3-1 coming into the game, Polo looked like the early season favorite for this matchup.
Things were tight from the start. River Ridge man aged to get into double dig its early on, but the Marcos would take a 13-12 lead into the second quarter. The sec ond was one of the Wildcats’ best quarters of the evening as they outscored the Marcos 14-9. The solid quarter not only gave River Ridge the lead going into the break but wound up playing a crucial role in the final outcome.
It took some extra basket ball to decide a winner in this
one as the Wildcats and Mar cos went into overtime tied at 46. River Ridge’s over time defense was impressive as they held Polo to just two points in the extra period. Meanwhile, the Wildcats put up double-digit points for the fourth time that night as Riv er Ridge picked up the 56-48 victory.
Jack Ketelsen led the way for the Wildcats with 14 points, hitting six of his eight shot attempts. Maddox Knauer and George Winter were next up for River Ridge as they both finished with 10. Dawson Kloss added seven points in the victory.
Two days later, the Wild cats were back on their home court as they played host to the Pearl City Wildcats. Pearl City has struggled through the early part of the season as they came into the matchup with an overall record of 0-4.
River Ridge hoped to avoid the trap-game as they looked
to get above five hundred.
The Wildcats got off to an early lead, thanks in part to a three pointer from Dylan Diehl. After taking a 7-4 lead into the second quarter, things came to a halt. Riv er Ridge managed just five points in the second quarter, while Pearl City put up zero. Winter and Isaac Rife were the only two players to score in the entirety of the second quarter. Despite that, the Wildcats found themselves in a good position as they took a 12-4 lead into the halftime break.
The River Ridge offense came to life in the third quar ter as Winter began to take over. The junior had ten points in the quarter alone as he helped River Ridge ex pand their lead to 27-9 going into the fourth.
The big lead would prove to be crucial as the Wildcats watched things slip away in the fourth. Pearl City caught
fire from deep as the team hit four three pointers in the final quarter. The Wolves managed to go on a giant run, scoring 18 fourth quarter points and making it a game again. The Wildcats lone fourth quarter score came on a basket from Seth Nicholas, and it was a big one. It would be the game deciding basket as the Wildcats picked up a 29-27 victory.
Winter led the Wildcats in scoring with 12 points on the night. Nicholas was next up with seven, while Diehl had five. It may have been closer than they would have liked, but the Wildcats went home with an improved record of 3-2.
After facing Milledgeville on Tuesday, Dec. 6, the Wild cats are back on the road as they travel to face off with the Eastland Cougars on Thursday, Dec. 8. Eastland is off to a 2-0 start in the young season.

Ranch Pasta
This dish can be used as a side or a main dish. If you have non-meat eaters, this is a dish that both meat eaters and vegetarians will eat (veg ans won’t eat it because it has sour cream and ranch dress ing). The spinach adds flavor and gives it color.

Final Thoughts
We certainly had an exciting Thanksgiving weekend. There were a few of us that were left to hold the fort down in our Le na-Winslow communities and many of us were glued to the television. Congratulations to our 2022 Panther Football team for their first-place champion ship two years in a row. They worked hard and had a lot to live up to. They certainly gave us a lot of great celebrations this fall. The same could be said for the Aquin Girls’ Volleyball team. They also brought back a first-place trophy to our little corner of the world.
I have told this story before that when I went to the Univer sity of Illinois, people would ask me where I was from. I always told them I was from a little town that they probably had never heard of—Pearl City. They, of course said, no they had never heard of it. I asked them if they had heard of Rock ford (it was then the second largest city in Illinois), and they said no they hadn’t heard of Rockford. I said had they heard of Chicago. Yes, of course, they knew Chicago. I said I didn’t live anywhere near there. I lived 200 miles straight west, 15 miles from the Wisconsin border, and 40 miles from the Iowa border. They looked at me as if to say, “Do you really live in Illinois?” Well after this fall maybe a lot more people know where we live. Thanks
Panther football and Aquin vol leyball for helping people know we are pretty special in our little corner of the world!

Hornets stay perfect with win at Stateline Shootout
By Trenten Scheidegger CORRESPONDENT
Last week, the Scales Mound boys’ basketball team improved their record to 6-0 on the year. While their week ended with a matchup at the Stateline Shootout in Lena, the Hornets had to handle business with the Shullsburg Miners first.
On Tuesday, Nov. 29 the Hornets made the trip north from Illinois to Wisconsin to face off with the Min ers. Shullsburg came into the game with a record of just 1-0, while the Hornets were 4-0. With the game being held in Wisconsin, the Hornets were set to play two halves of basketball rather than the four-quarter style of play in Illinois.
Although the Hornets didn’t put up a ton of points, they still found themselves in control of this one. Scales Mound nearly doubled up the Miners in the first half as they took a 27-14 lead into the halftime break. The second half was much of the same as the Hornets continued to put this one out of reach. Scales Mound outscored the Miners 29-17 on their way to a 56-31 victory.
Junior guard, Thomas Hereau, led the way for Scales Mound with 16 points. Here au did most of his damage from behind the arc where he hit four of his six attempts. Charlie Wiegel was next up for the Hornets with 15 points as he shot a solid 54 percent on the night. The Hornets had three players finish with six points in Seth Birkett, Jacob
Deurr, and Jonah Driscoll.
Two days later the Hor nets made the trip to Lena to face off with the New Glarus Glarner Knights. New Glarus, another team from Wiscon sin, would have to play the Illinois’ four quarter style of play with the game in Lena. Despite the Hornets returning to their comfortable style of play, the Knights would prove to be one of Scales Mound’s toughest battles to this point.
The first quarter featured a high scoring affair as both teams tried to gain the upper hand. Wiegel hit a pair of threes in the opening quarter to help the Hornets keep pace. Hereau added six points of his own, while Max Wienen had five first quarter points. Still, the Hornets found themselves trailing 22-19 at the end of the first.
The second quarter was a little more relaxed. If it weren’t for one New Glarus player hitting a trio of threes in the second, the Hornets would have dominated the period. Scales Mound con tinued to rely on Hereau in the quarter, as he added an other six points to his total. Scales Mound found them selves outscored, once again, in the second quarter as New Glarus took a 35-29 lead into the halftime break.
If the Hornets wanted to remain undefeated, it would require some adjustments and a big second half. Scales Mound Head Coach, Erik Krudonowicz, had his guys ready for the adversity as they came out firing follow ing the break.
The most notable change in the second half came on the defensive side. The Hornets held New Glarus to just six third quarter points. Meanwhile, Wiegel had his best quarter of the night on offense as he added anoth er seven points, including his third three pointer of the game. Hereau and Wienen each added baskets as well as the Hornets brought them selves within one. With New Glarus leading 41-40 heading into the fourth, there was still work to be done.
The fourth quarter fea tured another offensive shootout. This one was much like the scoring outburst in the opening quarter, only this time, the tables turned. The Hornets hit a pair of key three pointers in the final quarter, but where they really did their damage was at the char ity stripe. Scales Mound hit eight of their ten shots at the stripe in the fourth and were 11 of 16 overall. It wound up being the deciding factor in this one as the Hornets pulled off the comeback for a 62-59 victory.
Hereau led the team with an exceptional performance as he finished with 24 points and drilled six threes on the night. Wiegel was next up for the Hornets with 13 points, while Wienen and Driscoll each finished with seven.
The Hornets have anoth er home matchup coming up this Thursday, Dec. 8 where they will play host to the Pecatonica Indians. Pecaton ica is off to a 2-0 start on the year.

In addition to promoting oral health through education, local, state, and national dental societies advocate for our patients through better government policy. Earlier this month, after years of hard work and the support of dental societies throughout America, voters in Massachusetts were given the opportunity to vote for dental insurance reform. In an overwhelming victory, Massachusetts became the first state in the nation to pass a bill that requires dental insurance companies to be more transparent and accountable when spending premium dollars. This
Holding them accountable
By Dr. Stephen petraS Illinois Licensed General Dentist
reform further requires that they spend at least 83% of those premium dollars on patient care. Those carriers who fail to provide this minimum amount of patient care will be required to pay their consumers back the difference.
“Medical loss ratio” is the term that the insurance industry uses to refer to
how much of each dollar that you pay in premiums actually goes to patient care. Currently, most states allow dental insurance companies to operate without setting a specific medical loss ratio. Professional dental societies have been working for years to provide consumer protection through dental insurance reform. But as evidenced by the incredible opposition by the dental insurance industry, legislative reform does not come easy. The Boston Globe disclosed that dental insurance companies spent approximately $7.5 million dollars in an effort
to block this question from even appearing on the Massachusetts ballot. Delta Dental Insurance alone contributed 4.5 million of that amount to keep it off the ballot. They knew that once case law was set in any state, it would set a precedent for establishing a set medical loss in every state. By keeping it off the ballot, voters would not have the ability to pass legislation that would assure their premium dollars would go to patient care rather than company profit.
In contrast to dental insurance, medical insurance companies have been
REAL ESTATE NOTICES
required to spend a minimum of 80% of premium dollars on patient care since 2011.
This increases to 85% for insurance companies in a large group market. Insurance companies that do not meet this standard must issue refunds to their enrollees to make up the difference. Not everyone gets a rebate because insurance companies are incentivized to more accurately predict their projected premiums and meet their minimum medical loss ratio to avoid paying these rebates. Thanks to legally required transparency, the government knows when medical insurance companies
do not meet these criteria. Mandated rebates are a deterrent against excessive profits. In other words, the more profit the insurance company makes, the higher the rebate they must give to every enrollee. From 2012 -2021 required rebates have put almost 10 billion dollars back in the pockets of medical insurance enrollees.
With the passage of this hard-won dental insurance reform in Massachusetts, dentists across America now have a powerful precedent to assist them in their fight to provide this critical form of consumer protection nationwide.
