Blackhawks cover All Conference awards By Trenten Scheidegger SPORTSWRITER

The Stockton Blackhawks put in another solid football season in their 2019 campaign. Stockton finished with a 7-4 overall record after a second-round loss in the playoffs to an impressive Aquin Catholic squad. They outscored their opponents 252-136 and were much more impressive on their home turf where they went 4-1 on the season. Jessy Snyder’s Blackhawks were

led by a group of solid players along their offensive and defensive line, as well as the running talents of Jason Hermann. Nearly the entire Stockton offensive line was rewarded for their solid 2019 play as Cody Schultz earned a unanimous First Team All-Conference award. Case Harmston earned a Second Team All-Conference award, and Drew McGovern grabbed an Honorable Mention. The guy in the middle, Zach Cook, led the way

Lady Wildcats begin 2019 campaign By Trenten Scheidegger The River Ridge-Scales Mound Wildcats have begun their 2019 girls’ basketball season. Under the helm of Coach David Weigel, who came into the season with a career coaching record of 101-95, the Wildcats will have to find their new identity. Following their 18-8 2018 season, the Wildcats lost a few key components to their success in Tabria Thomas, Reese Miller, and Maddi Frey. Coach Weigel was returned just one of his starters from 2018 in Claire Wienen, who is now a senior. The team will have to focus on Wienen for leadership, as coach Weigel said, “We will rely on our lone returning starter from last year’s team, Claire Wienen, both offensively and defensively to help lead us throughout the season.” “Lack of experience will be a huge factor in this season’s success early, but we hope through hard work, to be competitive as we progress.” David said of the team’s weaknesses. On the plus side, Weigel believes his team should not have too much trouble working together and establishing their identity as a team. “Team chemistry will be a huge strength of this year’s squad. This group of kids really works hard and gets along well.” Weigel said. The Hornets have a very strong Junior class coming on this year. Weigel has high expectations for Livia Haas, Emma Kloss, and Sarah Pratt, who along with the leadership of Wienen,

could provide a solid core for the Wildcats to continue their success from last season despite the loss of so much talent. The Wildcats opened up their season with an impressive win over Benton. They held the Zephyrs to just 26 points while putting up 43 of their own in a route of Benton. The Wildcats then entered play in the Dakota tournament. They were set up with a tough opponent in the Aquin Bulldogs, who had the Wildcats number all game long. The Bulldogs outscored RRSM 17-5 in the first quarter and they ran away with things after that. With a 37-9 lead at halftime, this was one the Wildcats and Weigel just wanted to forget about. RRSM was much improved in the second half, but it wouldn’t be enough to climb their way back into this one. Kari Conklin and Sydney Driscoll found their rhythm as they put up five points each in the half. Sarah Pratt hit a three pointer and the Wildcats were able to put up twenty points in the second half. The Bulldogs were simply too much, however, as they walked away with a 75-29 victory over River Ridge-Scales Mound. Driscoll and Conklin both led the team in scoring with seven. Emma Kloss was next up with five points. Wiegel and the Wildcats will look to bounce back this week in a key matchup with the Lena-Winslow Panthers. The Wildcats will be at home as they host the Panthers this Thursday, Dec. 5.

another First Team All-Conference selection for his defensive line play. A solid year for Schultz, who can now call himself a two-way First Team All-Conference player. Bryant Keefer was an honorable mention for the defensive line group. At linebacker, both Harmston and Drew McGovern were First Team selections. The Junior duo will be a lot of fun to watch as they cover the field in their senior campaign next year. At defensive back, the Blackhawks had three players listed with Jaden Rice getting a First Team se-

lection, Winston McPeek earning a Second Team selection, and Andrew Haas earning an honorable mention. With a grand total of twelve All-Conference awards including honorable mentions, to a total of nine players the Blackhawks came in with the second most players to earn an all-conference award. Second to only the state champion Lena-Winslow Panthers. With a good number of the award winners being juniors, the 2020 Stockton Blackhawks team will be a lot of fun to watch.

for his guys as he was rewarded with a First Team All-Conference Center award. With such a solid offensive line it’s no wonder how Jason Hermann was able to run all over defenses this season. He exploited the big holes every game and did enough to get a unanimous First Team All-Conference Running Back award. To wrap up the offensive awards, Gavin Keefer was given an Honorable Mention for his tight end play. On the other side of the ball, Schultz was just as solid as he earned
