Warriors capture much needed conference win By Chris Johnson

Warren basketball hit the tournament trail this week, but not before the Warriors found a way to get back on the winning track within the NUICWest. On Thursday, Dec. 21, the Warriors defeated the Scales Mound Hornets, 53-41. Sophomore Ethan Williams led the way for Warren. He collected 17 points for his efforts and received strong support from teammate Andrew Kaiser, who knocked down 14. Senior Carter Kubat chipped in eleven in the win. The Warriors were able to wrest control in the opening period. The three stars each knocked in two baskets a piece, with Williams and Kubat collecting long-range shots in the

quarter. Scales Mound had two players score in their opening minutes. Kaelan Shetler and Tyler Allen both scored a basket each. After one, Warren was in front by ten, 14-4. Scales Mound came out quicker in the second and handled the Warren pressure. They outscored the Warriors by four points to push the deficit under the double digit mark. At the half, the visitors held the 24-17 advantage. The best period of the night waited for Warren in the third. Six players scored as the team put up 17 points. Scales Mound tried to keep pace, but ended up losing the quarter by three points, which pushed their deficit back to the double-digit range for the start of the fourth. The Warriors were in front 41-31. Sam Townshend accounted for more than half of the

scoring in he Scales Mound third. He scored nine points. Moderate success from the free throw line in the final minutes of action allowed Warren to settle in for the conference win. The Warriors had eight shots from the line. They missed only two as the team scored twelve in the fourth. Matthew Davis tried to keep the Hornets in the match. He knocked down two shots from longrange. He had three, three-pointers in the Thursday victory. Scales Mound scored ten points in the final frame

and fell to Warren by twelve, 53-41. Garrett Williams scored four points in the Warren win as teammates Matthew Riedl chipped in three. Kaden Sigafus and Chase Byrne both added two points to the effort. Tyler Allen led the Hornets in scoring. He collected twelve with Townsend adding eleven more. Davis scored nine points for Scales Mound with Shetler following with four points scored. Nic Davis tallied three points as Ethan Shelter picked up two points on a 50% effort from the free

throw line. Warren plays in the Eastland Holiday Tournament this week. They faced Stillman Valley in the Wednesday, Dec. 27 opener and will take on Prophetstown and Fulton on Thursday, Dec. 28. The Eastland Holiday Tournament closes on Friday, Dec. 29 as the Warriors face the host Cougars. Scales Mound will compete in the Mike Alexander Holiday Classic beginning Thursday, Dec. 28 with games also scheduled on Friday, Dec. 29.
