Scales Mound Hornets at a 4-0 record YOUR FREE HOMETOWN NEWSPAPER

VOL. 87 • NO. 51

By Trenten Scheidegger

The Scales Mound Hornets have picked up right where they left off, last season. After going 12-4 in the alternate spring basketball season, the Hornets are already a quarter of the way to that win total in their 20212022 campaign. With eight seniors on the roster, Scales Mound Head Coach, Erik Kudronowicz has one of his most experienced rosters ever. Led by Collin Fosler, Benjamin Vandigo, and Sam Cocagne, the Hornets have a number of options to look to for offensive production. They have not had any troubles finding production when they need so far this season. The Hornets opened their season on Tuesday, November 30, with a non-conference opponent in the Orangeville Broncos. The Hornets relied on a spectacular first quarter, in which, they outscored the Broncos 2610. Things got even more out of hand in the second quarter when the Hornets combined for another twenty-six points, while holding Orangeville to just five. The big first half had the game nearly out of reach as the Hornets

took a 52-15 lead into the halftime break. With the big lead, the Hornets were able to coast to an 84-35 victory over Orangeville to tip off their season. Vandigo led the team in scoring with twenty-one points on eight of twelve shooting. Fosler finished the game with sixteen points and Charlie Wiegel had eleven. The next day, Scales Mound found themselves matched up with the Dakota Indians for the second game of the season. It was another game that saw the Hornets take control in a hurry as Scales Mound appeared to carry over their momentum from game one. Another twenty-six point first quarter had the Hornets up 26-10 following the first quarter. They would only expand their lead in the second quarter when they outscored the Indians 23-6. With the 49-16 lead going into the halftime break, Kudronowicz and the Hornets had another second half with little to worry about. Dakota had their best quarter coming out of the halftime break when they combined for sixteen points. It was too little, too late, however, as Scales Mound went on to win the game

81-38 to move to 2-0 on the year. Vandigo led the team in scoring again as he posted sixteen points on the evening. Werner was the next leading scorer with eleven points. The Hornets had two players finish with nine points in Wiegel and Fosler. As a team, Scales Mound shot twelve of fifteen from the free throw line. On Saturday, December 4, the Hornets faced off in a border battle as they faced off with the New Glarus Ponies of Wisconsin. The Ponies appeared to be the biggest test of the season, thus far, but the Hornets still came out on top. It was another big first quarter for the Hornets as they outscored the Ponies 21-14. The seven point difference wound up paying dividends as Scales Mound would go on to win the game by just seven points. New Glarus caught fire in the fourth quarter as they combined for twenty-one points of their own. The Hornets had eighteen fourth quarter points, however, as the Scales Mound offense was just too much for the Ponies to keep pace. It was a season high game for Vandigo, who led the

team with thirty-two points, including a perfect four for four from the free throw line. Fosler was the next leading scorer with eleven. The duo was crucial in the third win of the season as they combined for forty-three of the Hornets sixty-four points. It was a double-double performance for Fosler, who finished the game with ten

assists and three rebounds. Despite having just seven points, Cocagne was a team player, finishing with seven rebounds and three assists. The Hornets kept buzzing in game four of the season as they dominated an Indian Creek squad 90-42. Vandigo led the team again as he dropped sixteen points. He also added six rebounds and

three assists as the senior is averaging just over twenty-three points-per-game, this season. Werner was productive in the win with eleven points, six rebounds, and four assists. At 4-0, the Hornets will be back on the court on Thursday, December 16, when they play host to the Durand Bulldogs.
