Warren’s season offers many possibilities By Chris Johnson Each week and almost each night so far this season the Warren Warriors boys’ basketball teams has made things exciting. With upsets and tournament championships already to their credit, the members of this year’s squad embarked on a series of matches as they attempt to close down 2016 with a lot of hope for the months ahead. Entering the month of December however, the Warriors ran into a little trouble. On Dec. 2, the Stockton Blackhawks who continue to look to improve on the work already in place came away with the five point win, 44-39. The loss hurt Warren’s standing in the NUIC but helped the team set itself up for the following night an a meeting with Big Northern Conference foe Byron. The Warriors six-point upset win helped push the month’s mark back to the.500 level. A game later the Pearl City Wolves found answers for Warren’s press. By a final score of 60-39, Warren had its early NUIC run shut down. Tournament play resumed for Warren as they took the trip south to face West Carroll as part of the annual Rt. 84 Invitational. Following the tip-off, the Warriors faced the Erie Cardinals, but couldn’t find enough offense to stay in the game, as they fell 59-44. The Warriors scored nine points in the first period and entered the second one shot back. Erie scored 19 in the second quarter and pushed their three-shot lead to almost 20 at the break. Warren put twelve points on the board in the third period helping them keep pace as Erie added 13 to its own score. After three periods, the Cardinals were in front 46-26. Warren’s best performance came in the final period as they got a lot of pieces working and tallied 18 points into the period. Erie put through twelve, but had enough of a lead built to easily coast to the vic-
tory, 59-44. Andrew Kaiser scored 20 points for Warren in the losing effort. The Rt. 84 Invitational wraps up Friday, Dec. 16, as the Warriors take on their counterparts from East Dubuque. Prior to the match with the Mississippi River’s version of the Warriors, Warren had to deal with Galena on Thursday, Dec. 15. Details of some of the later contests in the annual RT.84 Invitational are unavailable at this time. NUIC games continue in January, 2017 for Warren, as they play at Lena-Winslow High School on Jan. 5. On Jan. 7 Warren returns home to await a visit from the Scales Mound Hornets. A cross-Stateline clash with Potosi, Wi., appears on the schedule on Jan. 9 for Warren. On Jan. 13, about one month of the regular season will remain. Warren opens on the road at River Ridge and travels to East Dubuque on Jan. 19. The Warriors head home from their trip west for a rematch with River Ridge on Saturday, Jan. 14.
