Area villages kick off the season with annual Christmas Walks By Tony Carton

‘Tis the season to be jolly and a number of villages across Northwest Illinois will be opening the holiday season this weekend with celebratory Christmas Walks. Stockton Start your season by Walking in a Winter Wonderland with the Stockton Chamber of Commerce on Friday Dec. 1 at 5:30 p.m. when Little Jack Frost and Miss Merry Christmas will be crowned during the lighting of the Community Christmas Tree. Then warm your cockles with cookies and cocoa while caroling. There are rumors of a visit from the Jolly Old Elf and his better half and then on Saturday, Dec. 2, join the jolly couple for Story Hour at the Stockton Township Library from 10-11 a.m. before they head via Fire Truck to Stella’s Café for wish lists and photos. Be sure to visit the businesses throughout Stockton that are participating in the Adopt-a-Snowman program and get your cards punched for drawings, giveaways and special holiday deals. You can pick up a punch card at Stella’s from 10 a.m. -1 p.m. Every punch is a chance to win. There will also be horse drawn carriage rides across from Casey’s sponsored by Silk Rug and Illinois Bank and Trust and Bowling for a Buck at Stockton Bowling Lanes benefitting the Stockton High School Chapter of Servant Leadership. Then visit the Stockton Heritage Museum for the Festival of Trees. Christmas in Elizabeth Saturday, Dec. 2, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Location: S. Main St., Elizabeth, IL Celebrate an old-fashioned Christmas with the Village of Elizabeth. Visitors will experience an early trading post where it is business-as-usual – no holiday decorations or special Christmas sales! Meet Elizabeth Armstrong, who will talk about the Wassailing custom and other Christmas traditions of the 1830s and German immigrants, who will celebrate with a Christmas tree. There will also be hands-on 1830s toys and games for children of all ages. Participants should dress for the weather. Most of the activities will take place inside the Fort log cabins, but keep in mind that a “warm building” by 1830s standards is not the same as a warm, well insulated, modern building! Christmas at the Fort is part of Elizabeth’s “Christmas in the Village.” Trolley rides will shuttle visitors to the various activities around town, including the Apple River Fort. There will be a Christmas concert downtown, craft show, soup and bake sale, Christmas Tree decorating contest, Santa Dash – 1-mile fun run and many stores open late with Christmas bargains and discounts.
