Warriors capture state championship By Trenten Scheidegger SPORTSWRITER

The Black Hawk-Warren coop had only just begun, but they came out on top of everyone with a state championship in their first season together.
ty-six points per game and Edgar averaging just under that, with thirty-five points per game. Despite that, this division seven title game appeared to be set up for a defensive showdown, and showdown it was. The first half featured multiple turnovers and punts as both team’s defenses were dominating the game. The biggest drive of the game came when the Warriors were able to put up a big play as Jaylen Rufenacht broke free for a fifty-three-yard run, which set up the most important moment of the game. That moment came from the arm of Ethan Williams when he connected with Cayden Milz for a thirty-yard touchdown pass. The two-point conversion would be

Plenty has been discussed about the Warren Warriors making the move into Wisconsin football to form a coop with the Black Hawk Warriors. Although Black Hawk was already a perennial powerhouse in Wisconsin football, the move still benefited both squads. Black Hawk finished as the runner up in 2017 and won the division seven title in 2018. As a division seven squad, numbers can be hard to come by, and both schools decided to combine and make a run unlike anything we have seen before. Now, with more depth and added talent, the Warriors looked to return to the championship and earn a second consecutive stat title. Following the perfect 9-0 season, the Warriors rolled through the playoffs with victories over Cashton, Ithica, River Ridge, and Lourdes. The team seemed to be an unfair opponent for everyone, as they outscored their four postseason opponents by a total score of 175-28. One of the most impressive trips to the state title game that high school football has ever witnessed. The Warriors were not satisfied, however. With one more game on the line and a chance at their second state title in as many years, they refused to be stopped. They found themselves paired up with a tough opponent in the Edgar Wildcats, however. The Wildcats are a wellknown talent in Wisconsin football, as they are tied with Arrowhead for the most state championship appearances with thirteen. Edgar finished their regular season with an 8-1 record while being 12-1 overall including the postseason. It would be a rematch of the 2018 title game, which Black Hawk won by a score of 22-15. This time, Warren would be included. The Wildcats allowed just 51 points all season while the Warriors allowed 87. Both teams had powerhouse offenses with Black Hawk-Warren averaging over thir-
intercepted, which left the Black Hawks with a 6-0 lead late in the first half. The Black Hawk defense held Edgar to just 78 first half yards, while racking up over 190 yards of their own. Ethan Williams was impressive, completing eight of nine passes for 101 yards and the big touchdown pass. His one incompletion was an intercepted pass. The second half featured perhaps an even more impressive defensive performance. With multiple punts

and a turnover on downs, the Edgar Wildcats went into their final quarter of the season trailing 6-0. The Edgar defense kept the ball out of the Warrior’s hands as they had allowed just one first down throughout most of the second half. The Wildcats were close to tying things up in the fourth quarter when they found themselves in the endzone, but a yellow flag laid on the field. A holding penalty negated the score and forced the Wildcat offense back. The drive eventually

stalled with a turnover on downs, and Black Hawk-Warren’s sixpoint lead remained. Rufenacht had a big game offensively, but his best moment may have come on the defensive side when he snagged a late, fourth quarter interception to clinch another state championship for the Warriors. With their second title in a row,
