Stockton Chamber boosts Small Business Saturday with promos and ribbon cuttings EDITOR
The Stockton Chamber of Commerce is asking area residents to participate in this year’s Small Business Saturday, Nov. 25. Small Business Saturday is a day dedicated to strengthening our area business community by supporting local small businesses as residents begin shopping for the holiday season. It is usually a day to shop with friends and family finding interesting and remarkable gifts; it is all part of the allure of the day. “Small businesses are the heart of our community,” said Chamber President Marci Schubert. “Our friends and our families are running these businesses and when we shop local and shop small a lot more of that money stays in our community. We need to do everything we can to support them.” She said since Small Business Saturday falls between the traditional Black Friday and Cyber Monday during the weekend following Thanksgiving, Small Business Saturday can be a fun part of any holiday weekend schedule. By shopping locally, residents support the small businesses that help create the identities of our communities and make local cities or towns feel like home. “Our small businesses are booming and we want shopping local to remain foremost in everybody’s mind for the whole holiday season,” said Schubert. “We are running a series of ribbon cuttings on Small Business Saturday from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. for a number of participating businesses, and there will be an open house at each of those businesses until 2 p.m. We will be downtown at Animato Musical Arts Studio, Marie’s Wood Carvings, and Main Street Parties & Events celebrating their recent openings with light refreshments and/or hors d’oeuvres during this event.” In addition, online shopping reached an all-time high during the
holiday shopping season in 2016. Small businesses with successful online storefronts can have a distinct advantage. Make sure your inventory has been updated online and special promotions are prominently displayed. Also, cater to the busy shopper by ensuring your website is fast, processes transactions quickly and is optimized for mobile phones. Whatever you do, don’t ignore social media: Between Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and other social media tools, it’s hard to keep up. But don’t despair; social media can be your greatest asset, if used correctly. The Small Business Saturday page on Facebook has nearly 3.5 million followers, making it a great resource. Always use the #SmallBizSat or #ShopSmall hashtags on Twitter and Instagram to highlight special offers or discounts when the topics are trending. Customers want to see promotions and discounts from their favorite stores, so make sure you’re reaching out directly to existing customers. Email, or better yet, make a quick phone call to let your customers know about special deals or a complimentary item they’ll receive in your store on Small Business Saturday. Main Street Parties & Events is one of the many Stockton businesses working to celebrate Small Business Saturday and the folks there have one simple motto: “You don’t need a reason to party!” Whether it’s a graduation, birthday, or simply a night of fun with friends, Main Street Parties & Events can help make it a hit. With their ample space and amenities, you’ll never have to host a party or event in your own home again. There will be plenty to experience at Animato Musical Arts Studio too. Animato is home to accomplished soprano Lisa Nadig who has returned to her hometown to open AMA Studio Stockton and provide musical opportunities for those in-
terested in sharing the comfort and solace that comes with musical accomplishment. “I grew up in Stockton and attended Stockton schools,” said Nadig. “We have always had a very fine music program and I feel like the music training I received here helped me prepare for what I accomplished in larger venues.” And, be sure to make time to cel-
ebrate the opening of Marie’s Wood Carvings with owner and woodcarver Marie McDonough. The shop is rapidly gaining wide popularity with its selection of original exotic woods beautifully carved to catch your eye and your heart. In an age of global markets and capitalism, it’s far too easy for small businesses to struggle and fail, even if they have superior products and
services. As consumers, we have the power to change this, and Small Business Saturday encourages people everywhere to shop with small businesses for just one day, and change the world a little bit. Please join The Stockton Chamber of Commerce in celebrating these new businesses in our community on a special day set aside just for small business.
