Illinois has recently approved an Act which requires utility companies to develop plans that reduce their dependency on fossil fuels. The Illinois Long Term Renewable Resources Procurement Plan has mandated that at least 25 percent of generated power in Illinois will come from sustainable sources by the year 2025. What does that mean for this area, local homeowners, local businesses and utility companies? Average homeowners, small businesses and utility companies have several options including solar power or wind generated power. When looking at the practicalities of renewable energy, solar power just might be the best answer. Solar panels can be placed on residential homes or in large clusters on one sight in order to distribute power to any number of buildings. Large clusters of solar panels are referred to as Solar Farms. Solar panels work by converting sunlight into electricity. This is done by allowing photons, which are light particles, to knock electrons free from atoms which then generate the flow of electricity. This may sound simple, but it’s a process that requires sophisticated equipment, technical knowledge and professional installation. If a homeowner is considering having a solar power system installed, they can contact their local utility company for advice or get in touch with a contractor. One such contractor is Fosler Solar in Freeport. Fosler Solar has had considerable experience in the design and installation of solar energy systems. Sara Fosler said, “We work with clients from start to finish. We start with a site survey to determine if a solar system would be practical. The system size is determined by the homeowners’ annual power usage. If there’s a considerable amount of shade, how should the problem be solved, roof or ground placement of the equipment? What is required in the way of permits? “We handle applying for permits and other such issues. If a buyer so desires,
we can assist them with arranging for financing. Very importantly, we work closely with the utility company to assure a smooth transition. “A solar system can mean a monthly reduction in the utility bill. That amount can vary depending upon usage. There are also benefits such as tax credits.” Some people would like to use a solar energy source for their electricity, but for certain reasons they are unable to do so. For instance, their property may be too shaded. The shape of a structure and the lack of outdoor ground space can prohibit the installation of solar panels. Some communities have a home owners association which forbids such equipment. In such cases, a home owner or small business can consider becoming a member of a solar farm such as the South View Solar Farm, operated by the Jo Carroll Energy Company in Elizabeth. Peggy Francomb of Jo Carroll Energy said, “This solar farm is a cluster of 456 solar panels sitting on 3 quarters of an acre. Subscription is an ideal way for someone to use an efficient, eco friendly power source. A member can obtain a solar panel for a one time cost of $757. The purchased panel is a part of the grid system with its own meter. Depending on individual household usage, a member would receive a credit each month and enjoy annual savings which would allow for a payback of the investment within 15 years. This arrangement allows someone to have all of the benefits of solar power without having the system installed on their property.” All of those who are involved in the solar energy movement agree that this is a growing industry. The time to give serious consideration to using solar power as a primary renewable energy source is now. For those who would like to learn more about renewable energy they should contact a contractor or their utility company for more information. Happy anniversary Illinois
Cullen volunteered to make a display for the 200th anniversary of Illinois being admitted to the union on December 3. His presentation which is on display at the Stockton Library includes our state symbols. He spent a lot of time researching facts to create the exhibit. Great job Cullen!
Stockton Small Business Saturday welcomes museum participation The Stockton Heritage Museum will be open on Nov. 24, Small Business Saturday, for Holiday cheer, and to find items for those hard to buy for family and friends. Although the museum is a not-for profit entity, it decided to be open to support our local businesses. The Museum offers history of Stockton Books, DVD’s on Stockton early years and the railroad; Kraft cheese boxes, plus other Kraft items are available for pur-
chase. Surplus train items are also available, from track to buildings (most items are for HO size). This year we also have for sale reproductions of some of our vintage Christmas cards and gift tags, as well as Stockton postcards and note cards and commemorative plates. We also found some treasures from Schroeder’s Department Store, a fixture in downtown Stockton from the for many years; vintage toys and children’s clothing
are for purchase. These items were a generous donation to the Museum. Be on the outlook for some of our items to be posted for view on our Facebook page. Refreshments will be served, and door prize drawings will be held. We look forward to seeing you on Nov. 24, from 10-2.
