Stockton Blackhawks football back for second round By Chris Johnson
Only one time since 2011 have the Stockton Blackhawks made the playoffs and lost in the first round. It happened last year as Catlin-Salt Fork took a long trip and came away with the narrowest-margin win. They fell later in the tournament. This year, the Blackhawks have re-discovered the success formula and get another shot at Freeport Aquin because of it. They won on Saturday, in the 2017 Class 1A State Playoff opener over Cuba-North Fulton, 36-6. Stock-
ton hosts Freeport Aquin this weekend in the second-round game. Aquin survived a rabid-attack from the Fisher Bunnies to win by three, 30-27. Stockton and Aquin are both 8-2 on the season now and will see which team gets the right to move on to face either the State of Illinois’ number one team or their opponent Milledgeville. Lena-Winslow rolled over Toulon-Stark County 55-20 to move to the second round. Milledgeville had to hold back Abingdon-Avon to accomplish the same goal. They got it done, 56-21, to forge an all NUIC upper

branch of the northern bracket in the Class 1A Field. Three weeks ago the Bulldogs and the Blackawks met up in Stockton and the game went down to the last minutes before it was decided. Stockton came away with the 16-14 decision and, as a result, eventually won the NUIC-Upstate with a perfect 7-0 mark. Aquin’s only other loss this season came at the hands of the defending Class 1A State Champion Forreston Cardinals in week four, 50-19. by the Blackhawks. Stockton guaranteed that one member of the NUIC will be playing for the right to move on to Champaign and the Class 1A State Finals. In the top half of the bracket, oneseed Lena-Winslow faces eight-seed Milledgeville and four-seed Stockton prepares for five-seed Aquin. Of the 16 teams remaining in the State of Illinois small-school division elimination bracket, five are from the NUIC, with three from the Upstate and two from the Northwest. In 2A, Northwest member West Carroll still stands. There is a chance, based on how the

IHSA Selection Committee drew up this year’s bracket, that Forreston might have a chance to work through the bottom branch itself and set up an allNUIC Class 1A State Final. It would be appropriate since the NUIC has been the champion of the 1A world every year since 2010, with the exception of last year. Dakota has once it all once since then, Lena-Winlsow has gotten it twice and Forreston has picked up two of its own, just in the past three years. EPC picked one up in 2015 in 2A, giving the NUIC-Northwest both the 1A and 2A State Champion that year.
