As we all know, the Scales Mound football team made the decision to move up into Wisconsin to join the coop of Benton-Shullsburg. The big difference between Wisconsin and Illinois ball is that the football season begins one week earlier in the Dairy State, meaning playoffs begin a week earlier as well. Scales Mound joined up with the Knights and they had a great season, finishing 7-2 overall. Their offense averaged over thirty points per game and they piled up over two thousand rushing yards and thirty scores on the ground. The high-powered offense was able to earn them the four seed in the Division Six bracket, where they would face off with the five seed in the Darlington Redbirds in level one. Darlington went 6-3 on the regular season. Early on it was all Knights, as their offense seemed to be putting this one out of reach. Two early pass touchdowns from Kelly to Shetler and Lawrence had them leading 14-0 as they went into the second quarter. They matched their first quarter in the second, when two rushing touchdowns from Shetler and Lawrence put them up 28-0 with just 1:47 remaining in the half. The Redbirds answered quickly, getting on the board late with a 66-yard touchdown pass to bring them within three scores. The Knights held a 28-7 lead going into the break. The third quarter was a complete reversal from the first half, however. The Darlington offense went off for three straight scores, two of which were over sixty yards. Scoring 28 unanswered points, they were able to erase the massive deficit and come back to start a whole new game entering the fourth quarter. The Knights were able to regain the lead with just under three minutes in the fourth when Lawrence ran into the end zone for his second score of the night. They would go for two, which ended up being unsuccessful. That failed conversion would turn out to be
the biggest play of the game as Darlington was able to score late and kick the extra point to take a one-point lead with just over a minute remaining. Darlington was able to force a stop and finish off what has to be one of the most remarkable playoff comebacks of all time. A twenty-eightpoint deficit in a game is one thing, but the playoffs are an entirely different atmosphere. They were able to do it, however, which resulted in an absolutely heart-breaking loss for the Knights. Lawrence was the star with over 130 yards rushing and two scores. The downfall to the Knight’s offense was four total turnovers, all of which came by way of interceptions. The Knights defense allowed over 260 yards passing and another 122 yards on the ground as once Darlington found their momentum they could not be stopped. The postseason loss ended the Knight’s season at a 7-3 overall record, while Darlington moves on to level two to face off with Mondovi (WI) on Friday, November 1 at 7 p.m.
