Stockton golfers bring it on strong in state tourney play The 2017 Boy’s and Girl’s State High School Final Golf Tournaments were played on Oct. 13 and 14. The boy’s played in Bloomington on Prairie Vista Golf Course while the Girl’s played in Decatur on Red Tail Run Golf Course Stockton’s Megan Gille finished up a fantastic career as a high school golfer with a return to the Girl’s State Final Tournament. On Friday she shot an 83, which included a 10 on the par 5 14th hole, positioning her in 28th position of the 110 players. On Saturday, she shot an 85 with nothing higher than a bogey, landing her in 31st position. Megan improved twenty-one spots from last year’s state finals. Megan finishes her career with four sectional tournament appearances, four conference tournament runner-up medals, and two state appearances. This year she solidified her claim as Stockton’s greatest female golfer in school history with an average nine-hole score of 42.8. Most of

this average is from the men’s tees, as she played on the boy’s team throughout the regular season. Alex Staver finished up a magical junior year golf season with a return to the Boy’s State Final Tournament. On Friday he shot an 81, bogeying 6 of his last 7 holes, landing him in 27th position of the 110 players. Disappointed with his first day, Alex responded with a 76 on Saturday to improve fifteen spots into twelfth place at day’s end. Although not medaling, Alex finished only five shots out of a tie for third. In the past two years, Alex has finished 9th and 12th at the Boy’s State Tournament and has his senior season upcoming. This year, Alex won his third straight conference tournament, advanced to his third straight sectional tournament, and won thirteen medalist honors. He also achieved Stockton school records with 13 medalist honors in a single season and a single season nine-hole average of 37.4.

Safe Haven Humane Society celebrates twelve years of caring for animals By Tony Carton

Are you looking for a furry friend for your household? Well, look no further than Safe Haven Humane Society, located on Hwy 20 West in Elizabeth where you will find dozens of cuddly kitties and dogs of every age, shape and size. “Jo Daviess County does not have an animal control facility and so about twelve years ago folks thought they needed a building to house the homeless cats and dogs,” said Safe Haven Shelter Manager Sue Nicolini. “They started collecting money and somehow they collected enough to buy a building.” She said they know the building was home to McCarther Machinery and had been a bookbinder’s shop over the years, so when Safe Haven took it over it was in need of extensive renovation. “Today, we have false ceilings and

tons of room upstairs and it took a lot of money to bring it to the point we see today,” said Nicolini. “There were a lot of people involved over the ten years we’ve been in this building and we are looking forward to seeing a lot of those people when we host our Annual Gala at the Woodstone Restaurant on Eagle Ridge Drive in Galena on November 4.” Safe Haven will host a dinner and auction fund raiser in celebration of their twelfth year in operation and the more than three thousand animals they’ve successfully relocated in that time. “We run this shelter one hundred percent on donations,” Nicolini said. “We do not get any government funding and ten years is a long time to be operating on the kindness or our supporters.”
