Stockton Heritage Museum to host presentation

Stockton Heritage Museum will host Illinois Historian John Lynn, as he takes his audience on an entertaining road trip tour of Illinois towns. The presentation, “Main Street, Illinois” will take place on Thursday, Oct. 19, 2023, at the Stockton Heritage Museum, 107 West Front Street, Stockton, IL, at 2 p.m.

The product of a 30-year continuing project to capture the many ways our Illinois towns offer roots, a hometown, and a Little America for us all, “Main Street, Illinois” is a memorable and fun-filled tour of the charms, traditions, and personalities of our Illinois towns — mostly small towns — led by the

only person who has visited and photographed all 2,400 of them. Lynn takes audiences to the far-flung corners of the state to the small towns that aren’t on the map. Lynn has also hiked, biked, and canoed enough historic and scenic trails, roads, and rivers in North America and Britain to circle the globe. He has shared his experiences and discoveries with over 4000 audiences.

As we celebrate 99 years of Home and Community Education (HCE) in the State of Illinois and 88 years of HCE in Jo Daviess County, we wanted to share with you some of the activities and projects our organization has accomplished over the years. It takes all the members to reach the goal of Top County in the state of Illinois with 75 members or less, and we have accomplished this

goal not only in 2021 but also as runner-up in 2020!

The organization offers scholarships for graduating high school students who are furthering their education.

Members in each unit make book bags for preschoolers in the various pre-schools in the county with a book in their bag. Members make aprons

Dorothy Jean Schreck Dorothy Jean Schreck, age 79, of Madison, WI, and formerly Stockton, IL, passed away peacefully on Monday, Oct. 2, 2023, at Agrace Hospice in Fitchburg, WI. After a debilitating battle with lung disease, Dorothy waded through the shallow waters to The Far Side Banks of Jordan and into the waiting arms of her beloved daughter, Kelly Jean, who pre-deceased her in 1978.

Dorothy was born May 17, 1944, to Francis and Ferne (Wills) Gallagher in Freeport, IL. She was a 1962 graduate of Warren High School. That same year she married Robert Schreck on June 3, 1962, in Nora, IL. She was a member of Christ Lutheran Church and the Naomi Circle, Stockton, IL. Dorothy was a wife, mother, and homemaker until 1978, then she began her first responder career as a Charter Member of the Stockton Community Ambulance. She was a longtime CPR Instructor/Trainer for the American Heart Association and a First Aid Instructor for the American Red Cross. Her other careers included co-owning and operating DJ’s Village Variety in Stockton, Atwood/ Excel Industries first aid and administrative offices, and

later retiring from Freeport Health Network as a medical transcriptionist. After retirement, she was a founding member of The Council Hill Station Band and cat mom to Gus and Lady Gray.

Survivors include her husband, Robert, of Madison, WI; two children, Michael (Jamie) Schreck; Colorado Springs, CO; Cammie Schreck (David Ringoen), Madison, WI; Gus the cat; grandchildren Jennifer Wright, Hawley, TX and Jenni (Josh) Weiland, Petosi, WI; five great-grandchildren Macie (Devin) Baker, Ravin Wright, Gage Wright, Sylas Stevens and Jurnee Gerber; one great-great grandson Weston Baker; brother William (Suzanne) Gallagher and sister Ruth (Jim) Sturtevant all of Freeport, IL; sistersin-law Diane Foley and Linda Lowery of Chehalis, WA, and beloved nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents and daughter, Kelly Jean; in-laws Douglas and Hazel Schreck; brothers-in-law Bernie Schreck and Chuck Foley; and Lady Gray.

Tammy Wybourn Tammy (Burke) Wybourn, 51, of Lena, peacefully went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Feb. 2, 2023, after a brave fight against cancer. Tammy was born in Freeport on Oct. 5, 1971, to Jim and Diane Burke. Tammy married Darin Wybourn on June 16, 1990.

Tammy was a proud, devoted mother to Nick and Cassie, and a loving and caring grandmother to Collyns and Bowman. Tammy found joy in watching her children’s sporting events, Cassie’s dance competitions over the years, and hosting Burke family holidays. Anyone that knew Tammy also knew how much her miniature Daschund Mandy meant to her. Mandy was always included as part of the family on greeting cards, in family photos and even on answer-

ing machine messages.

Tammy was truly someone who prioritized her family above everything else.

She was employed by the Lena-Winslow School District as a paraprofessional, where she enjoyed working with the students. Tammy was a revered friend to many in the school district.

Tammy is survived by her husband, Darin. She is fondly, forever remembered by her son, Nicholas (Deidre) Wybourn and their children, Collyns and Bowman all of Lena and her daughter, Cassidy (Zachary) Zaruba of Madison, Wisconsin. In addition, Tammy is truly missed by her parents, Jim and Diane Burke

Larry Nelson In loving memory of Larry Nelson, who peacefully passed away on Saturday, Sept. 30, 2023, at the Lena Living Center in Lena, IL. Born on Aug. 19, 1945, in Morrison, IL, Larry was the beloved middle child of Francis and Dorothy Nelson. On June 7, 1968, he embarked on a lifelong journey of love and companionship when he married Kimberlee “Kim” Schoonhoven, of Lanark, IL. Larry spent his formative years on a Shannon, IL farm.

He attended Shannon Schools and pursued his passion for education at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, IL, where he earned both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree.

Throughout his life, Larry wore many hats. He dedicated over three decades of his career from 1967-2000 as a high school English teacher in the Lena-Winslow School District, shaping the lives of countless students. After retirement, he transitioned to a new chapter, working as an insurance adjuster and inspector for West Point Mutual Insurance Company of Lena from 2002 to 2017.

Larry had a passion for writing and primarily was a self-taught photographer. Before beginning his teaching career, he contributed stories and images to the Rockford Morning Star. But remembered most of all as a loving amazing wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and dear friend. She lived her life with patience, grace, and a subtle Irish wit. Rest Easy Dot. Through the years he was known for his captivating photographs, especially of barns, which he turned into calendars and books. His snapshots of the Village of Lena Water Tower were made into postcards and puzzles which were sold at Lena Drug Store. His photographs captured the beauty and emotion of the world around him and were his way of connecting and giving back to his community. His photography also documented landscapes, flowers, animals, and birds of Northern Illinois, with a special affinity for eagles and bluebirds.

He lent his talents to the Northwestern Illinois Farmer and Shoppers Guide paper where he had a column called “Patch”. If Larry wasn’t using his camera, he was often seen on his trusty Ford tractor with his tiger cat riding along while he mowed the lawn and enjoying nature.

Larry is survived by his loving wife, Kim Nelson of Lena, Illinois; his children, Rachel Zipsie of Greenville, Michigan, and Corey Nelson of Lena, Illinois; one grandchild, Aleese (Rane) Stone of Kansas City, Kansas; two

great-grandchildren, Odin and Rhys Stone; two sisters, Gayle (Wayne) Schou and Martha (Jim) Moellenberndt, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.

Larry was a member of the Lena United Methodist Church, where he held various positions on church committees, choir, and men’s singing group called Joyful Noise. He was also actively involved in the school’s Panther Press and founder of LW-TV. Since its inception at the Lena Winslow High School, Channel 10 was the place to have community access to events happening in the community, a telethon to raise money for the food pantry, and live broadcasting of sporting and other school events. He was recognized in 2000 as Grand Marshal of the Lena Fall Festival.

A funeral service in honor of Larry’s life took place on Saturday, Oct. 7, 2023, at Chapel Hill Cemetery in Freeport, Illinois, with Pastor Doug Carroll officiating.

The service was private, reserved for immediate family.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established with the Lena-Winslow Foundation, a scholarship fund supporting students pursuing education majors, or Odin’s Heart Foundation.

Bev is survived by her daughters; Laura (Tony Celletti) Hartney of Freeport, Janet (Kevin Pax) Lindenman of Lena, Debbie Harder of Evansville, WI and Susan Woods of Freeport, four grandchildren; Nicky Betthauser, Brandon (Tara) Harder, Bradley Harder, and Tegan Woods, three great-grandchildren, four great-great grandchildren, and her siblings; Charlene Jackson, Kendalyn Sherman, and Kim (LuAnn) Moyer.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Earl, great-granddaughter Hailey Betthauser, and her son-inlaw Michael Woods.

St. John’s Lutheran Church, Pearl City will celebrate the twentieth Sunday after Pentecost on Oct. 15.

The October Grace Meal will be on Sunday, Oct. 15 and will include pork chops, baked potatoes, green beans, applesauce, and dessert. St. John’s Lutheran Church Annual Bazaar and dinner

The Annual Bazaar and dinner will be held on Nov. 7. The Bazaar opens at 8:30 a.m. and features a variety of homemade products including baked goods, noodles, candy, and crafts. Dinner will be served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Dine-in meals will include beef and noodles, mashed potatoes and gravy, vegetable, Jell-O salads, relishes, dinner rolls, brownies, cake or angel food cake, coffee, or milk.

The price is $12. Drive-thru carry-outs will also be available. The carry-out meals will vary slightly and include applesauce instead of jello.

There will be a $1 per ticket raffle for a quilt and wall hanging. FHN will be offering flu shots blood pressure screenings from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m.

Salem United Church of Christ

All are welcome to join for service led by Pastor Christopher Ham at Salem United Church of Christ, 8491 West Salem Road, Lena, Illinois, ton Sunday, Oct. 15, 2023, at 10 a.m. Immediately following service will be the Annual Meeting and potluck lunch. The Adult Sunday School will be held prior to service starting at 9 a.m. on the lower level of the church.

Children’s Sunday School is held during church service at 10 a.m.

The Wednesday Breakfast Bunch will meet Wednesday, Oct. 18 at 8 a.m. at the Beltline Café, 325 West South Street, Freeport, Illinois. Everyone is welcome to join.

During this time the men playing games and get to know each other better. Bible Study is offered at 6:30 p.m. on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month. Crafternoon is held from 3:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on the third Wednesday of each month. During this time there are snacks, a brief devotional thought, and plenty of time to work on crafts individually or together. All of the events are hosted on the lower level of Salem United Church of Christ, and all are welcome to join. News briefs Northwest Illinois F-4 Jet Memorial

The Northwest Illinois F-4 Jet first arrived in Lena in January 2019 and the project is well underway. The jet has been painted thanks to Koning’s Precision Paint and Body of Lena, and the markings will be added before moving the jet to its permanent location on Main Street in Lena. Donations are still being accepted and memorial pavers are available for purchase.

Donations can be mailed to PO Box 290, Lena, IL 61048. The committee would like to thank everyone who has had a part in making this project come to life.

Oct. 20 and Saturday, Oct. 21. The stand is located outside of Cub Foods, 1512 S. West Avenue, Freeport, IL. It will serve sandwiches from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. with rib-eye steaks, brats, pork chops, hamburgers, cheeseburgers, and hot dogs. Potato chips and beverages are also available. Marion Huttenlocher Marion F. Huttenlocher, age 89, of Stockton, IL passed away Sunday, Sept. 24, 2023.

He was born in Woodbine on Feb. 21, 1934, to the late Friedrich and Ruth (Wurster) Huttenlocher. Marion married Joyce Miller on Oct. 20, 1957, in Cedarville, IL. Joyce passed away on Jan. 8, 2022.

Marion farmed his whole life and was very passionate about farming. He served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in France. He was a lifelong member of Derinda Lutheran Church where he served on Church Council. He also served on the Jo Daviess County Mutual Insurance Board of Directors, Federal Land Bank Board, Production Credit Association Board and as Woodbine Township Moderator. He enjoyed taking trips with his friends and family.

A few weeks ago, I submitted a list of universal truths that I think we can all recognize and maybe even agree with.

In today’s culture of division, isn’t it a pleasant and nice truth to simply agree? I concur and couldn’t agree more.

When writing that first list of truths, I found I had too much material for just one column. So here’s a second.

Who knows, perhaps there will be more. I hope so, because I think finding things we can agree on, universally, is a positive - now perhaps more than ever before.

Maybe that is universal truth number one: Finding common ground is a good thing.

Truth number 75: Colors— as in hues of the rainbow and beyond. You don’t give them much of a second thought until you are decorating.

It is at that time that gray becomes at least 12 different distinctive shades with names like slate, dark slate, light slate, medium slate, sliver of slate, silver slate and beyond slate. The decision as to which to pick for the walls of your kitchen is hardly black and white.

Number 12: Weeds don’t exist. They are a category made up by humans, based on our desire for grass-filled yards and flower-filled, vegetable-filled gardens.

Dandelions, creeping Charlie and even poison ivy were created for a reason and they have adapted to their environments to be so successful they are often deemed weeds.

Despite their weedy reputation, they are useful, if you see them as such.

Dandelion flowers attract pollinators, like bees. The flowers of poison ivy serve as food for birds. All three have homeopathic uses. Both dandelions and creeping Charlie are rich in vitamin C. Bottom line, like all plants, weeds serve Mother Nature, who doesn’t like her soil to sit empty. Instead, she fills in the blank spots with growth we humans have decided to label as weeds.

depends on the company you keep. Good friends and family beat a top shelf cabernet any day.

Number five: Time alone can be just as valuable as time together. It depends on the person and the relationship.

Number 1001: Sometimes an invention creates a product. What came first, wall to wall carpet or the vacuum cleaner? The answer might surprise you. The vacuum cleaner came on the scene in the 1920s, a decade or so later, the idea of wallto-wall carpet came into being.

Number 997: Leaf blowers were invented for a reason, but I haven’t figured it out yet. I mean. If you want to get rid of leaves, don’t you have to do something more than just move them to another destination? How about a leaf vacuum—something that would suck them up and put them in a bag? Now there’s an invention worth inventing (if it hasn’t been already).

Number 772: Babies are born cute—for a reason.

Puppies, kittens, hedgehogs, bunnies, piglets even all have certain characteristics that humans, at least, see as cute. Large eyes, a large head in relation to their bodies, chubby cheeks, a small nose and mouth all serve to trigger the cuteness factor. Cute makes us want to nurture—to complete those middle of the night feedings and diaper changes with an attitude of positivity, despite sleep deprivation.

Number one through one million: At the end of it all, all that matters is love. Who you’ve loved, how you’ve loved and how universally you’ve loved. All of it.

Go out and do that.

quit the team and went home to the swamp and Bradshaw went on to become a four-time Superbowl champion with the Pittsburgh Steelers and is now in the professional football hall of fame in Dayton, Ohio. Turns out it was all true.

My wife and I were out and about this weekend doing some extra speaking at a church in connection with my newspaper column and we decided to go see the movie, The Blind, which is currently in the Theaters for a short time. The movie did not disappoint in any way shape or form. It told the powerful true story of a young Phil growing up in intense poverty basically in a single parent home with his three siblings and their abusive mom who was in and out of mental hospitals during their childhood. As

the oldest child, Phil became the caregiver for his mother and younger siblings. When he got older, he discovered his gift to play football and became a great quarterback in high school earning a scholarship to Louisianna Tech. He also fell in love with a wonderful girl named Kay who he married when she was only sixteen and he was twenty which is legal in Louisianna with parental consent. He then went off to college where he tried to focus on school and football, but he missed his young wife, the woods and duck hunting so much that he quit school and went back home to hunt, fish and try to raise a family.

The story is riveting in that it follows Phil and Kay’s path over their early years. They had three boys during those years, but Phil became involved in severe

alcohol abuse which tore their life apart and nearly destroyed their family for good. Phil’s sister, Jan, who he had helped raise, was the first to share the life-changing power of God through faith in Jesus Christ to Phil. He violently resisted sighting his own mother’s difficulties and God’s lack of presence in his life as a kid as reason not to believe in the Lord. After Phil in a drunken rage kicked

Kay and the boys out of the house, Phil’s sister Jan helped Kay get help from her local church and Kay put her faith in Christ for salvation. She began raising her three boys to love the Lord as the Bible teaches.

Eventually, God got a hold of Phil’s heart and he too put his trust in Christ. He left his life of alcoholism and violence and became a devout Christian and a wonderful husband and

father.

At the end of the movie, Phil himself comes on the screen and says that this is their true life story with nothing held back. It is the story of how the power of Satan and evil can be defeated in one’s life by the power of the Lord. He says that it is rather embarrassing to revisit the man he used to be, but he knows that millions of people who struggle with these same

issues need to see that Christ can bring restoration, forgiveness, hope and joy.

It’s called being born again and Jesus said we all must be born again in order to know Him. In John 8:36 Jesus said, “Who the son sets free is free indeed!”

If you want to be moved deep in your spirit, I highly recommend this movie.

On Sept. 23 the Lena-Winslow FFA Chapter competed in the State Horse Judging CDE with members Mika Schoger, Madalyn Schierloh, Reyana Pettinger, Lillian Schoger, and Rebecca Wise. On Sept. 20 members of the Lena-Winslow FFA Chapter participated in the Section 1 FFA Land Use CDE. During this event competitors Dustin Campbell, Mika Schoger, Reyana Pettinger, Lillian Schoger, Kegan Dezell, Jillian Goebel, and Kaydan Yount had to identify and analyze varying soil types. Some of the soil identification variables include erosion levels, till usage, drainage, and soil texture. The team placed third overall, with the top scorers being Reyana Pettinger in fourth, Kaydan Yount in fifth, and Jillian Goebel in seventh place.

On Sept. 27 first year members of the Lena-Winslow FFA Chapter attended the section Greenhand Conference. The Greenhand Conference is an opportunity for new members to experience portions of varying FFA events. The chapter relies on new and upcoming members to carry on their legacy of success. Many of the newest members have noted that they are excited to meet new people, participate in the diary food judging CDE, and take part in the public speaking event. Excluding the 2020 Covid year, the Lena-Winslow Panthers have won three consecutive Illinois Class 1A State Football Titles. Although the Panthers lost a majority of last year’s squad, many believe LeWin has what it takes to make another deep postseason run.

“We lost 10 starters on defense and eight starters on offense,” Lena-Winslow head coach Ric Arand shared just before practice for the 2023 season started. Arand is entering his 27th season as the Panthers’ head coach. The experienced instructor will have to find a way to take a roster filled mostly with new faces and help them reach their full potential once again.

If anyone is capable of doing that, it’s Arand. Through 26 years, Arand holds a career record of 234-66. More than Arand, the Panther-Strong program has set the standard for winning across Illinois High School Football. Not only have they captured three consecutive titles, but six in total.

The Panthers have stamped their name in the Illinois history books and this 2023 squad is hoping to do much of the same.

Despite losing so many to graduation, the Panthers still return some familiar names

this season. Gage Dunker gets plenty of action as he returns as an outside linebacker on defense and the team’s fullback on offense. Dunker, the younger brother of Gennings Dunker, who is now on the Iowa Hawkeyes, looks to lead the way for the Panthers.

Dunker will have some familiar faces blocking ahead of him as the Panthers return two starting offensive linemen. Odin Stabenow and Tanner Kempel will look to hold things down on the edge as the Panthers’ offensive tackles.

Outside of that, however, Le-Win is going to have a plethora of new faces on the field in 2023. “We need a lot of guys to step up and mature quickly to be successful,” Arand shared.

The Panthers will have to replace a number of guys along the line of scrimmage.

Luke Kempel, Luke Stabenow, Brady Aurand, and Alex Packard will all be playing on the offensive and defensive line. Mason Spidahl and Quinn Rodebaugh will both get opportunities at tight end and defensive end as well. Casey Klever also lines up at tight end on offense, but he’s off the line on the defensive side as an outside linebacker.

Citizens State Bank Ragnar Road Team presents funds to Sinnissippi Centers

On Oct. 7, 2023, Officers with the Freeport Police Department arrested Raekwon A. Robinson, age 21 of Chicago, while he was a passenger inside of a vehicle that was stopped in the area of Pine Av and Avon St in Freeport. The apprehension of Raekwon Robinson was for a Freeport Police Department felony arrest warrant issued on Oct. 6, 2023, for one count of Aggravated Battery which was alleged to have occurred on Sept.

28, 2023.

Shortly after Officers approached the vehicle Raekwon Robinson was stopped in, probable cause existed for Officers to conduct a search of the vehicle.

During a search of the vehicle, Officers recovered two loaded semi-automatic firearms.

Raekwon Robinson was taken to the Stephenson County Jail where he faces an additional felony charge of Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon. Robinson is currently being held at the Stephenson County Jail, pending the outcome of a detention hearing.

The public is reminded that the defendant is presumed innocent and is entitled to a fair trial, at which the government has the burden of proving guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

FHN sports physicals return $675 to Warren schools

FHN’s series of sports helped save time and hassle area schools. All proceeds physical clinics, held through- for many area parents, and from the $25 physicals are out the spring and summer, raised more than $17,000 for donated back to the schools

by FHN. A total of 15 sports physical clinics were held at FHN offices across northwest Illinois this summer, providing 692 physicals and raising $17,300 to donate back to 12 area schools. A total of 27 students had their sports physicals at a recent clinic held at the FHN Jo Daviess Family Healthcare Center in Stockton, raising $675 for the Warren School District.

EPC drama department presents ‘The Murderous Mrs. Maisey’ The EPC Drama Department is thrilled to announce their upcoming fall play, “The Murderous Mrs. Maisey,” a farcical masterpiece of female strength and humor. This uproarious comedy promises an unforgettable evening of laughter, unexpected twists, and zany characters that will have audiences rolling in the aisles. “We are excited to pres-

ent this show which is a play that not only showcases the comedic talents of our students but also highlights the power of female characters. It’s a hilarious rollercoaster ride that we can’t wait to share with our community,” says Mrs. Jamie Graf, the EPC Head Drama Coach.

Performances will be held on Oct. 21 at 7 p.m. and Oct.

22 at 2 p.m. in the Pearl City Small Gym. Tickets are general seating and cost $6. Tickets can be purchased from cast and crew members or at the front door before the show.

Through the show, several wooden stools will be used as set pieces. EPC drama is teaming up with the community to have these stools painted in period styles for the show.

These stools will be featured in a silent auction during the performances as a fund raiser for the drama department. The auction winners will be announced after the curtain call

It was a big weekend for River Ridge-Scales Mound Golf and more specifically, two of their individual golfers.

Thomas Hereau and Camden Flack put on a show last weekend when they competed in the IHSA 1A State Golf Meet at the Prairie Vista Golf Course in Bloomington, IL. Hereau, a senior at Scales Mound, used his experience to his advantage. Hereau made it to the state tournament last season and took 68th place with a score of 173 over his two rounds of play. This year, Hereau blew that score out of the water.

On day one of the tournament, Hereau shot two below par with a first-round score of 70. That was good enough to give the senior a two-stroke advantage entering day two.

Hereau had to remain consistent, but that two-stroke lead wound up making the difference on day two. With a final

score of 143, Hereau brought home the gold as he beat the rest of the 1A field by two strokes.

Flack also qualified for day two of the tournament. On day one, Flack, a junior from River Ridge, finished with a score of 86. Flack wound up finishing in 56th place with a final score of 168. It was Flack’s first trip to the state tournament, and you can bet he’s looking forward to returning next year much like Hereau did.

Following the championship, it was celebration time for Hereau. “It means so much,” Hereau said after clinching first-place. “I put countless hours into my game because this has been my goal for years and years, and to finally get it done, I couldn’t be happier,” Hereau exclaimed. That caps off an epic high school golf career for Hereau. The Scales Mound senior has plenty to celebrate but he also “can’t wait” for the upcoming Scales Mound basketball season.

Felony arrest warrant served

On Oct. 4, 2023, the Stephenson County Sheriff’s Office Investigations Division executed a search warrant at a residence in the 1000 block of S. Logan Street in Lena, IL as part of an investigation that was initiated on Sept. 16, 2023.

While the search warrant was being executed, Matthew Kaufman, age 43, of Lena, was detained without incident at a different location in Freeport.

Following a review of the case by the Stephenson County State’s Attorney’s Office, an arrest warrant was obtained for Matthew Kaufman for three counts of Predatory Criminal Sexual Assault of a Child and one count of Aggravated Criminal Sexual Abuse, all of which are alleged to have occurred in 2016 and involve a victim who was under age 13. Matthew Kaufman is

currently being held without bail at the Stephenson County Jail.

The investigation remains active Matthew and additionKaufman al criminal charges are possible.

The Stephenson County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank the Village of Lena Police Department, Illinois State Police Division of Criminal Investigation (Zone 2), and the Stephenson County State’s Attorney’s Office for their assistance with this investigation.

Summer weather ushered in October, but the cooler weather of fall finally reached us. Leaves are falling and mums are blooming. Pumpkins are appearing on porches and doorsteps. This week we have a few fall recipes and some good main dishes. Have a good week cooking.

Jalapeno Popper Spread

If you need a zippy appetizer, this spread is a great combo of cheese and heat.

Serve it with colorful peppers or corn chips.

2 pkgs. (8 oz. each) cream cheese, softened 1 C. mayonnaise ½ C. shredded Monterey Jack cheese ¼ C. canned chopped green chilies ¼ C. caned diced jalapeno peppers 1 C. shredded Parmesan cheese ½ C. panko breadcrumbs Thin slices of sweet red and yellow peppers Corn chips In a large bowl, beat the

cream cheese, mayo, Monterey Jack cheese, green chilies, and diced jalapenos until blended; spread into an ungreased 9-inch pie plate. Sprinkle with parmesan cheese; top with breadcrumbs. Bake at 400 until lightly browned, 25 to 30 minutes. Serve with peppers and chips.

Favorite Fruit Salad

This salad is an interesting combination of fruits and greens. You cook the dressing and let it cool, so it does take some advanced preparation.

It is a great and unique side to plain old lettuce salad. ¼ C. grapefruit juice ¼ C. orange juice ¼ C. pineapple juice 2 t. cornstarch ¼ C. white vinegar 2 T. canola oil 1 garlic clove, minced 3 T. sugar 1 t. yellow mustard ½ t. paprika ½ t. nutmeg 8 C. torn Boston lettuce 8 C. torn iceberg lettuce 3 C. orange sections 3 C. fresh pineapple chunks 3 C. fresh strawberries In a saucepan, stir juices and cornstarch until smooth.

Bring to a boil over medium heat; cook and stir for 2 minutes. Cool to room temperature. Add vinegar, oil, garlic sugar, mustard, salt, paprika and nutmeg. Stir to mix ingredients. Cover and chill for at least an hour.

Line a jelly roll pan with cooking parchment paper.

With serrated bread knife, carefully cut bread in half horizontally. Pinch or tear bread from top and bottom halves, leaving about a ¾ inch shell.

Save bread pieces for croutons. Place bread rings cut sides up on pan.

In a skillet cook beef 6 to 8 minutes over medium-high heat until no longer pink; drain. Reduce heat to medium. Add taco seasoning mix and water. Heat to simmering; cook 1 to 2 minutes or until slightly thickened. Use decorated side of bread ring for top of Bundtwich. Place 12 of the cheese slice halves evenly in decorative side of bread ring. Place remaining cheese slice halves evenly in other side of bread ring; top with beef mixture and onion.

Bake 8 to 12 minutes or until cheese is melted and rings are hot. Top beef and onions with lettuce, then tomatoes. Carefully replace decorative side of bread ring; lightly press.

With serrated bread knife, cut into 8 wedges to serve. Serve with sour cream and salsa.

Blooming Apple Cheesecake

There aren’t a lot of apple cheesecake recipes out there, but this one uses gingersnap cookies as its base. The cheesecake is just a regular cheesecake, but the topping is absolutely sinful. Enjoy this great apple dessert.

3 C. gingersnaps, firmly ground 5 T. butter 4 pkg. (8 oz. each), room temperature 1 2/3 C. sugar 5 eggs 1 C. sour cream 2 T. flour 1½ C. apple cider ½ C. caramel sauce 2 apples, cored, halved, sliced thin Preheat oven to 350. Coat a 9 x 3 springform pan with cooking spray. Mix gingersnap crumbs with butter and press into bottom of pan. Beat cream cheese and sugar until fluffy. Beat in eggs, one at a time, then sour cream and flour until smooth. Pour into pan. Bake until set, about 1 hour and 45 minutes. Run knife around cake to loosen.

Let cool. Chill 8 hours; remove sides of pan.

Pour apple cider into a skillet; bring to a boil over high heat and let boil until thick.

Add caramel sauce and apple

slices; over low heat, cook until apples soften, about 8 minutes. Let cool. Top cheesecake with apples and glaze.

Apple Doodles

How about some apple cookies? There aren’t many cookie recipes that use apples.

These cookies are a great fall treat and easy to make.

2/3 C. butter flavored shortening (Crisco) 1 C. sugar 1 egg, room temperature 1 t. vanilla 2 C. flour 2¼ t. cinnamon 1 t. baking powder 1 t. baking soda ½ t. salt 1 C. finely chopped peeled tart apples ¾ C. chopped nuts, optional Preheat oven to 375. In a large bowl, cream shortening and sugar until light and fluffy, 5 to 7 minutes. Beat in egg and vanilla. Combine flour, cinnamon, baking powder, baking soda and salt; gradually beat into creamed mixture.

Stir in apple and nuts. Drop by tablespoons 3 inches apart onto lightly greased baking sheets. Bake until golden brown, 13 to 15 minutes. Remove to wire racks to cool.

Final Thoughts I have no leaves to fall in the back yard, but they are coming down in the front.

My beautiful hibiscus plants were still blooming when they went to their winter home in Iowa. If I can’t find someone to take them, I have to send them to my friend’s ditch, so I am always glad when they are adopted.

I am still recovering from surgery, but this week is going better. I went to my job at the volleyball game against Pearl City. It was Cancer Awareness night or Pink Night, and they had a beautiful recognition that night. Besides the cancer survivor recognition (a special one for former coach Rose Black) there was also a recognition for Melinda Bond, who retires after fifty years. It was great to out, but I was a tired puppy.

Crossbites: damage control

Malocclusion is the term used to describe teeth that come together and fit properly or bite in the correct position.

A crossbite is one type of malocclusion. When the teeth are aligned correctly, the upper teeth will fit slightly over the lower teeth. In a crossbite some upper teeth are positioned inside the lower teeth. There are two types of crossbite. In a posterior crossbite, one or more of the upper back teeth will sit inside the lower back teeth when you bite. In an anterior crossbite, one or more of the upper front teeth come together behind the lower front teeth.

Crossbites only involve some of the teeth. If all the upper teeth are positioned behind the lower teeth, this would then be termed an underbite. Overbite

So why does this matter?

What impact does a crossbite have on your oral and overall health? A crossbite is not just a cosmetic issue. Crossbites can affect growth of the jaw and palate, alter the shape or appearance of facial features and/or symmetry, cause jaw strain/pain from uneven engagement of the facial and jaw muscles, uneven wearing

of the tooth enamel, tooth chipping, tooth grinding, gum disease, headaches, tooth decay, frequent biting of the inner cheek, mouth breathing, sleep apnea, and difficulty speaking, chewing, and maintaining dental hygiene.

Crossbites can develop because of genetics (birth defects: cleft palate, narrow jaw or palate, missing teeth, supernumerary teeth, delayed loss of teeth, impacted teeth, abnormal eruption of teeth), external influences (trauma, tumors, or prolonged thumb sucking, pacifier, or bottle use), or a combination of these factors. It is ideal to treat crossbites in children, so we can take advantage of being able to guide growth and prevent further damage.

Buoyed by state funding, new biomedical research hub launches in Chicago Chan Zuckerberg Biohub part of Facebook founder’s philanthropy

With vocal support from the governor and $25 million from the state, biomedical researchers are beginning to work on studying the fundamentals of human disease at a new facility in Chicago. The Chan Zuckerberg Biohub—named for philanthropists Priscilla Chan and her husband and Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg—is the second biomedical research center launched by the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative. The first is in San Francisco.

In addition to initial state funding, the center will receive $250 million from the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative over 10 years to fund research into inflammation, part of the body’s innate response to irritation and disease.

The for-profit philanthropy organization chose the Chicago location based on the application of a team of scientists from Northwestern University, the University of Chicago and the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Theirs was chosen from a pool of 58 applications.

One of the things that set the Chicago applicants apart, according to Chan, was the enthusiasm from Gov. JB Pritzker, who sent a formal letter of support for the project as well as adding a more personal touch.

“Gov. Pritzker showed up at the applicant interview day as the top cheerleader of the team presenting their case,” Chan said at the Biohub’s launch event Thursday.

At the launch event, Pritzker delayed the day’s schedule—

later lamenting he wasn’t able to “fully geek out”—when he refused to leave a lab because he wanted to discuss the potential applications of research into inflammation in nervous systems and muscle tissue.

“I’m gonna get in trouble,” Pritzker said when he noticed he was being watched by an event coordinator. “Yeah, you are,” she replied, hurrying the governor out of the lab.

The $25 million state grant for the facility, which is still being processed, will come from the state’s Rebuild Illinois infrastructure program, according to a spokesperson from the state’s Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity. A representative of the Biohub declined to divulge the total cost of the facility.

The under-construction Biohub is scheduled to be completed in January. The plan for the facility mixes elements of a university engineering department and a tech startup. Tissue incubation labs will be located down the hall from flexible workspaces and an office kitchen and bar.

The blend between a Silicon Valley ethos and academic research goes beyond the office design and into its budget as well. That’s evidenced in the $250 million the lab is set to receive from CZI, which is primarily funded through Chan and Zuckerberg’s stock in Meta, the company formerly known as Facebook.

Shana Kelley, the Chicago Biohub’s president, said the steady revenue stream will allow it to bypass the typical search for ongoing funding that

is common in academia.

“You don’t have to ask the question ‘could we fund this?’ ” Kelley told Capitol News Illinois. “You can just say ‘is this worth trying?’” Kelley, a professor at Northwestern University who is currently incubating her third and fourth companies, said the funding and more collaborative research model allow researchers to focus on “high risk, high reward” ideas. “We’re not doing a lot of the other things you have to do in an academic institution,” Kelley said. “We’re not training graduate students. I’m not teaching undergraduates.”

The “disease agnostic” focus on inflammation came from existing work at the Biohub’s three partner universities which each have labs focused on studying instruments that can be inserted into tissue and immunoengineering. This type of research mostly revolves around building technology that will measure biological

processes at the molecular level within human tissues, with the ultimate goal of treating inflammation involved in many conditions such as cancer and autoimmune disease. “We’ve got to get inflammation figured out,” Kelley said. “We’ve got to learn to control it.”

Currently, the research center has 11 staff members—with a planned staff of 30 to 50—and has ongoing projects with partner universities. Hope Burks, a fellow at the Biohub, is working on creating devices that can be inserted into the skin that monitor inflammation in real time.

Burks said this research might be helpful in developing diagnostic or clinical tools that can identify and treat disease.

“What kind of inflammation is happening?” Burks said during a presentation Oct. 5. “Do they have different signaling patterns that are specific to each other?
