Lady Hornets late-season win streak snapped REPORTER
After things were finally put in place in the regular season calendar rolled towards late September volleyball, the Scales Mound Lady Hornets started winning. A success streak was built and the conference race became a little more involved. Then Lena-Winslow showed up and put the breaks on the early October ride. On Thursday, Oct. 5, the Lady Panthers knocked down the Lady Hornets in straight games by scores of 25-19 and 25-23. The loss halted the late-season stretch that has seen Scales Mound win four of their last seven series, with a tie against Paw Paw registered during the streak. The Lady Hornets fell to West Carroll on Sept. 23, as Tournament play moved into the late games, by scores of 25-17 and 25-18. They responded a match later as they shut out Christian Life two games to none. The Lady Hornets won the opener 25-18 and topped it with a more exciting 25-20 nightcap. NUIC games resumed on Thursday, Sept. 28asthe Lady Hornets avenged their one-week earlier loss to the West Carroll Lady Thunder. In the conference clash Scales Mound opened strong and closed the first game with a 25-18 win. They were even stronger in the second quarter as they blew past the Lady Thunder 25-10. The win streak continued into Monday, Oct. 2 as Scales Mound upset Eastland. The Lady Hornets took control at the serve and supported it at the front line as they powered their way to team-earned 25-17 first game decision. Eastland was a lot stronger in the second game. They knew the night would be over soon if they didn’t force at least a third game.
They got it done with a 25-19 decision to make it 1-1 with game three to play. The serves were shared and the points collected in bunches by both teams. A feeling of “whoever got the last serve chance was probably going to pull it out” began to grow with fervor. The back-and-forth match pushed into the 20’s. Time was called and the two teams regrouped. Scales Mound got early control in the race for the final points and managed to keep the Lady Cougars scurrying for digs. The Lady Hornets won game three 25-23. Lena-Winlsow interfered with things last week for Scales Mound,

Blackhawks snare playoff-qualifying win By Chris Johnson REPORTER
The toughest stretch of the Stockton Blackhawks football season has begun and so far things are turning out exactly like they were drawn up, at least with the wins collecting. The Polo Marcos picked up the loss and Stockton moved to 5-0 in the NUIC-Upstate with the 49-21 win on Friday night. Their fifth win of the season also makes them playoff-eligible. A six-win season is a guarantee of post-season play. Looking at Stockton’s schedule though, it does appear five should do it. By looking at the total number of wins of the opponents faced by Stockton this year, another number is forged. That number is what officials refer to as playoff points. The higher the playoff points usually means a team played a pretty rigorous schedule. Five wins shows they won more than half of them.
The Blackhawks took the field in their week seven match with a 4-2 season mark. They had accumulated 30 playoff points already this season. Moweaqwa Central A&M, with a similar mark, had more playoff points than Stockton, across the State of Illinois. No team with a 6-1 or 7-0 record even received that many. Only 3-3 Morrison has more points than Stockton this year, considering teams who call northern Illinois home. They had 33. Stockton has won four of their last five games and they beat, potentially, three playoff-bound teams. They knocked off Milledgeville to start
the stretch 22-20. They lost to 2A, probable-designee, West Carroll in week four 14-0. The current three game win streak began against River Ridge, following a 34-0 decision and continued at Ashton-Franklin Center in week six, as the Blackhawks came away with the 45-6 win. There are only two games left in the regular season now and the closing stretch will stay tough. The final third of the season wrapped up this past Friday night over 4-3 Polo and it continues against Freeport Aquin on Friday. The match with the Bulldogs this week could be for the Upstate Title
outright. A win by Stockton will give the Bulldogs their first conference loss of the year. They will be in a statistical tie with Stockton for first place. Stockton would claim bragging rights over Aquin with the win though. It could also seriously affect seeding, which takes place after the final plays of the season are called net Friday, Oct. 20.. The 2017 regular season closes on the road at Orangeville and the Broncos are seriously wanting to get a shot at hosting their opening round game. They entered the week with a 4-3 record, two games behind the leaders in the loss column.
