Census takers needed locally for 2020 By Hendrica Regez CORRESPONDENT
The U.S. Census Bureau needs to hire about 500,000 census takers across the country in 2020. “This is a great opportunity to supplement your income! We need people to apply now as all applicants must go through a background check before they can be considered for census taker positions this spring,” said Debra Frost, Recruiting Assistant for Jo Daviess, Stephenson and Carroll Counties. “Recent high school graduates, veterans, retirees, military spouses, seasonal workers and applicants who are bilingual are highly encouraged to apply.” Census takers will be hired to work in and around their communities and go door-to-door to collect responses from those who do not respond to the 2020 Census online, by phone or by mail. These part-time and full-time positions offer competitive pay, flexible hours, paid training and weekly paychecks. The pay rate in Jo Daviess County for Census Takers (Enumerators) is $17.50 per hour plus .58 cents per mile. Work on Sunday includes premium pay and work after 6 pm includes a night differential. The selection process for census taker positions begins in January. The Jo Daviess County Complete Count Committee is joining efforts to spread the word about working for the Census. “The Census Bureau is working hard to recruit and hire local census takers from their own communities because they are familiar with the
area. The census takers will contact people who may have difficulties filling out the census. We are all striving for a complete and accurate count.” says Diane Gallagher, Jo Daviess County 2020 census complete count committee co-chair. The first step is to create an online account at https://2020census.gov/ jobs. After creating an account, the applicant will receive an email from the Census Bureau that includes a link. The link takes the applicant back to page where the account was created and then the applicant can complete the online job application. The application will include some assessment questions about your education, work and other experience. The U.S. Constitution mandates that a census of the population be conducted once every 10 years. Census data are used to determine congressional representation in the states and how billions of dollars in federal funds are distributed to states and local communities every year for critical public services and infrastructure, including health clinics, schools, roads and emergency services. This year’s census form includes only nine questions and can be filled out online, by phone or by mail. In mid-March, households will begin receiving official Census Bureau mail with detailed information on how to respond to the 2020 Census. For more information on the 2020 Census, visit 2020census.gov. Why is an accurate count so important? The 2020 Census will provide a snapshot of our nation—our population, where we live, and so much
more. The data can help inform where our communities need a new fire department, more funding for school lunches, or new roads. Of course, the census tells us much more than just the population of our county, in 2010, for example, we learned that women made up 50.8 percent of the US population. The U.S. Census Bureau provides population counts to the states for re-
drawing congressional district lines. Illinois is among the States that could lose congressional seats and depends on an accurate count. Census results help businesses make decisions such as where to open new stores, where to expand operations, and which products and services to offer. Recovery organizations such as FEMA rely heavily on data collected

by the U.S. Census Bureau. Did you know that U.S. Census Bureau data helps communities respond to natural disasters and secure funding for hospitals and fire departments? The amount our county receives of the $675 billion in discretionary spending that the federal government disburses depends on accurate counts. Locally we could lose up to $1800 for every person that is not counted.
