Donors keep Stockton’s SNOW program running smoothly VOL. 88 • NO. 3

Stockton’s Student Nutrition Outreach Works program continues seamlessly due to generous business, church and individual donors. This program, started over 10 years ago by Laurie Gothard-Zueger, works to keep food on the table for (currently) 13 underprivi-

leged families in the Stockton School District. Each Friday, a grocery bag full of non-perishable food is sent home with students to supplement the family’s weekend food supply. Although SNOW is its own entity in the community, it is facilitated by the

Stockton HS Servant Leaders and the Stockton Food Pantry. SNOW has been given its own storage room within the Stockton Food Pantry, and the program works with the pantry in supplying different types of healthy items for disadvantaged members in the dis-

Student Nutrition Outreach Works program a success

The SNOW program, facilitated by Stockton High School servant leaders and the Stockton Food Pantry, was able to provide meals and gifts to families in need thanks to the generous donations from the community. trict. The Servant Leaders fundraise, shop, pack and deliver the weekly bags to the Elementary and Middle Schools each week. The identities of the families served are kept confidential through Stockton’s new District Social Worker, Tina Buske. Buske is solely re-

sponsible for getting the weekly bags to the correct students, as well as delivering special holiday items. Besides weekly food bags, the SNOW program provides a special Thanksgiving meal and Christmas gifts to the families. This year, Servant Leaders shopped and wrapped gifts for 27 children, spending over $1,600 on a variety of items requested by the parents. Buske adds, “The Servant Leadership kids and their advisors have been incredible to work with. The time and care they take to help kids and families in our district is a blessing to our community. It is a true statement of the character they possess for empathy and compassion towards others.” Without donations from the community, the SNOW program would not function. Each year, thousands of dollars are donated by local churches, businesses, and individual community members. Major donors this year were: Stockton Service Center, Citizen’s State Bank, St. John’s Lutheran Church and Holy Cross Catholic Church. Holy Cross not only donated a large amount as a church, but the parishioners also gave hundreds of dol-

lars in personal checks and food items. Other business donors included: Dr. Stephen Petras, Stockton Lions Club, Jim Sullivan Realty and Hartzell Family Foods in Warren. Stockton’s HS Servant Leadership mentor, Maggie Guenzler, states, “I was amazed at the outpouring of donations and food items this year. The number of families being served has increased, and the community of Stockton has done a fantastic job of providing. I am especially impressed and humbled by the number of individuals donating by cash or personal check. I hope people realize the positive impact they are making with their contributions!” If you are interested in donating to the SNOW program, please take cash or checks to the Stockton HS Office and specify that the donation is for the SNOW account (checks can be written simply to S.N.O.W.). Before donating non-perishable food, please check with a Servant Leader to learn what is most needed at the time. This year’s members are Maria Bender, Justin Eden, Jenna Haas, Olivia Harnish, David Lancaster, Abigail Wilkinson and Trace Williamson.
