Soaking it all in

Autumn in Geneva Lakes area offers plenty of color and variety

While every season has its offerings, autumn in the Midwest is the favorite of many residents and visitors.

With its changing colors, as the leaves turn from the green of summer to yellow orange and red depending on the species of trees, autumn is a beautiful time of the year.

Autumn is the time to head out of doors and enjoy the last vestiges of pleasant outdoor activities. There are numerous outdoor activities in the area to be enjoyed before the cold weather of winter arrives.

Here are some favorites. Get out there and enjoy.

Along the Water

In Lake Geneva, it is Geneva Lake that is the center of so many activities that bring visitors to the area and encourages local residents to get outside and enjoy the beauty.

The gem of the lake is the Shore Path, which the original settlers to the area assured would be preserved for all to enjoy. Throughout the day, walkers can be seen along the path, enjoying the beauty of the lake and the gorgeous lakefront estates.

The path is more than 20 miles in length and is estimated to take about 10 hours to complete for someone in relatively good shape. The footpath varies from dirt, to grass to paved areas and meanders around the shore.

It is not a smooth and easy walk throughout, although some sections are easier to walk than others. Many walkers do not attempt the entire path in one outing but

may walk sections at a time on different days until they have covered the entire path.

It is not only the beauty of the lake with its many watercraft enjoying the last weeks of the boating season but the elegant landscaping of the homes on the shore with beautiful fall flowers in bloom that makes this a beautiful walk for all.

It is a beautiful way to spend an hour or two or a whole day along the water.

On the Water

A visit to Lake Geneva would not be complete without a boat ride on one of the Lake Geneva Cruise Line boat tours.

The company’s fleet of boats includes eight classic boats all fully restored and all different.

The oldest of the boats is the Steam Yacht Louise with its polished brass and mahogany restored to the look it would have had in its early days. It has been on the lake for 120 years. The perfect way to experience the beauty and architecture of the area is while relaxing on the boat.

Throughout the summer, a variety of tours are available including the one- and two-hour historical tour that shares the history of the mansions on the shore of Geneva Lake while visitors leisurely relax on one of the historical boats of the Lake Geneva Cruise Line.

Or choose from a variety of other cruises offered, including the famous mail jumpers who deliver mail by boat to residents of the lake shore. Occasionally the jumper will miss the boat, which continues slowly while the jumper is on the pier. Whether one chooses the ice-cream tour, popular with children, or the more romantic dinner cruise, visitors will be awed by the beauty of the lake and the knowledge of the narrators.

All the cruises become fall color cruises in October as the colors change around the lake.

While the one-hour cruises only cover a portion of the lake, it is the two-hour cruise that covers the entire lake and takes in the beauty of the complete shoreline.

The two-hour cruise that is recommended in October to fully enjoy the changing colors around the entire lake shore. Visitors won’t regret spending the time viewing the beauty as you relax on the boat.

Visit www. cruise lakegeneva.com for more information about the Fall Color Cruise and to purchase tickets.

On the Roads

If people are looking for a comfortable automobile ride, away from the hustle and bustle of the busy roads like the interstates and even Highway 50 as visitors make their

way into and out of the area, it is time to visit Wisconsin’s Rustic Roads.

The Rustic Road system was first created in 1973 by the Wisconsin State Legislature as a way to recognize and preserve the scenic, smaller, and yes, less traveled roads, that are the spirit of Wisconsin’s countryside.

There are now over 100 rustic roads throughout the state, and each one is unique.

The Lake Geneva area is fortunate to have four of these roads easily accessible off Highway 50. All four can be enjoyed in one afternoon as Rustic Roads are short –

from two miles to a maximum of 37 miles and each road is unique.

Located on the west end of Lake Geneva is Rustic Road No. 29, also known as Snake Road. Aptly named, Snake Road twists and wiggles its way through the countryside. To the left are glimpses of Geneva Lake through the trees and beautifully landscaped grounds of some of the estates along the shore.

Areas of natural vegetation, split-rail fencing and even a horse or two in a pasture add to the country feel. The road ends back at Highway 50.

East of Highway 12 again off 50, are

above: A walk, ride or drive down Snake Road at any time of the year is a quiet and peaceful experience to enjoy the beauty of the area. top: In the fall, the beauty of the Shore Path increases with the changing of the colors. Enjoy a walk around the lake and take in the beauty of the shore and the crystal clear lake.

three more Rustic Roads. Rustic Road No. 12 begins at Back Road and, like No. 29, squiggles through the countryside with green hills and valleys as you travel to Highway 36 in the little town of Lyons.

Along the route, stop at the White River County Park and if there is time and wander the trails. Then stop and enjoy the smalltown flavor of Lyons.

Close to Rustic Road No. 12 is Rustic Road No. 11. It too travels from Highway 50 to Highway 36 but has a very different look. Enjoy the views of Kettle Moraine and, as you meet up with Rustic Road No. 36, enjoy the horse farms and Cranberry Road where early settlers once harvested the cranberries Wisconsin is known for.

Cranberry Road will take you back to Highway 50. Visit www.wisconsindot.gov for information on other rustic roads and to obtain maps. Rustic roads can be biked, hiked, motorcycle driven, or traveled by automobile. The Rustic Roads are marked with brown and yellow signs with the shape of the state and the Rustic Road number.

On the Rails

Trains are loved by young and old. While they are no longer the main method of traveling across the country, a train ride long or short brings smiles of joy to the passengers.

The East Troy Electric Railroad, which runs from The Railroad Museum in East Troy to the Elegant Farmer in Mukwonago, is a favorite recreational train ride.

While the routes offer a variety of rides throughout the season, one of the favorites and most colorful is the Fall Harvest ride. Passing through the Wisconsin countryside in the fall with the trees in full color, it is a breathtaking ride.

The train ends at the Elegant Farmer, where there is time to enjoy the fall activities of apple picking, the pumpkin

patch, and hayrides pulled by a tractor. There is also the perennial favorite, the corn maze – constructed to be doable by children. Laser tag is available for those 8 years of age or older.

Don’t forget to stop for a piece of the Elegant Farmer’s apple pie baked in a paper bag or to take home a pie to enjoy later.

Before a train ride or upon return, take the time to enjoy the Railroad Museum in East Troy. Trains run Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Purchase tickets in advance at www.eastroyrr.org. Call 262642-3263 for more information.

On the Farm

Pearce’s Farm Stand on Walworth Road (Highway 67) in Walworth is a favorite place to come to purchase fresh-grown vegetables throughout the growing season.

In the fall, it becomes the favorite place not just for purchasing fresh vegetables but for enjoying fall activities.

Pumpkins become ripe and are available for sale either already picked or on weekends (Saturday and Sunday) take the tractor driven hayride to the pumpkin patch to select and pick out a pumpkin. Customers pay for what they pick.

A day at Pearce’s is fun for the whole family. The jumping bales are a favorite of children and are open daily. They are complete with slides and tubes for more fun.

The lookout tower attracts the climbers. The human hamster wheel often has children waiting for their turn to be a hamster.

Each year, Pearce’s has a corn maze that covers about 12 acres. Ready to attempt to find the way out of the maze? The maze is open daily from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. through Oct. 31.

Come early on the weekend for the kids to enjoy the open area. Purchase lunch here to enjoy at the picnic tables. Hot dogs,

left: Biking along one of the rustic Roads in the fall is a way to enjoy the beauty of the colors and the fresh fall air. above: A ride on the East Troy Electric Railroad offers a stunning glimpse of the countryside between East Troy and Mukwonago.

pulled pork, corn on the cob and other picnic-style foods are waiting. Homemade donuts and kettle corn are made on site on weekends. Freshly made baked goods are available for sale.

It is hard to leave without purchasing one of the beautiful and gigantic potted mums available for sale. Perfect for the front yard.

Visit www.pearcefarms.com for more information on their weekend festivals.

Over the Trees

A unique way to enjoy the colors of fall is to travel above the trees or within them. The Lake Geneva area offers two great choices to view the colors from a different perspective.

Instead of looking up at the trees, how about looking down at them? A ride in one of The Lake Geneva Balloon Company’s hot air balloons will give passengers the chance to view the colors of fall from above as it glides over the trees or adjacent to them.

The flights are usually one hour in length, depending on the wind strength. The flights take off at sunrise or sunset, although participants must arrive earlier to be taken to the launch site and watch the setup of the balloon. From those who have enjoyed the flights, they describe them as “surreal, serene, peaceful and awe inspiring.”

If visitors are ready to view the fall colors from above, go to www.lakegenevaballoon. com.

Another choice for a unique view of the fall colors and a chance to enjoy the beautiful fall weather is to visit Zipline Adventures also in Lake Geneva.

The 100-acre property offers a variety of zipline adventures that will take one through and into the trees. The zipliner will descend from in the trees down the zipline as the colors of fall race by.

To enjoy fall among the trees contact www.Lakegenevaadventures.com.

The hunt is on!

Hunt smart and safe this deer season

The deer hunting season opened Sept. 17 with archery and crossbow season, which runs until Jan. 8, 2023. The annual nine-day, gun deer hunting season runs Nov. 19 to 27. Hunters with disabilities may hunt Oct. 1 to 9.

Jeff Pritzl, deer program specialist with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources said this year’s hunting season will look much like the last couple of years.

“The good news for hunters is that there isn’t any significant changes this year to be aware of,” he said.

The hunting forecast in the state is on par with last year, Pritzl said.

“We don’t see any signs of great change this year,” he said. “Things have tended to stabilize in recent years. We haven’t seen a lot of disease. We do have chronic wasting disease in some areas and are encouraging hunters to continue to submit samples so we can track that in Wisconsin.”

The DNR website, dnr.wi.gov, has more information on CWD and submitting samples.

“We even have self-service kiosks and online forms to submit a sample through the phone at the drop-off site. We anticipate sampling to stay as good as last year or even better, hunters are good about this,” Pritzl said.

He also reminded hunters that every deer harvested must be registered.

“This can be done online, too,” Pritzl said. “It’s the most important thing a hunter can do.”

Stay safe

Safety, of course, is something the DNR encourages with hunters.

“For archers getting started now, we want them to be aware of tree stand safety,” Pritzl said. “It’s one of the riskiest things hunters do, getting up in the tree stand. People can fall and get seriously hurt.”

Pritzl warned the condition of ash trees is particularly concerning because of the emerald ash borer.

According to the DNR website, emerald ash borer (Agrilus planipennis) is an invasive, wood-boring beetle that kills ash trees by eating the tissues under the bark. Native to northeastern Asia, emerald ash borer was first detected in the United States in 2002 and is thought

to have been introduced from China via the wood from shipping crates.

“We advise hunters to become aware of the issue with EAB and the condition of ash trees,” Pritzl said. “The infected trees become very brittle and susceptible to breaking branches. Hunters should remove stands from trees that are dead or dying.”

Each year, during the gun hunt, Pritzl said there are incidents with accidental discharges involving injuries and sometimes, death.

“Last year, during the gun hunt, we had one fatality and about five or six injuries,” he said. “The overall statistics have improved with more firearm safety education. It’s rarely someone who gets accidentally hit from a distance by another hunter. It tends to be more incidental – the accidentally discharged gun. Because of that, half of the injuries tend to be self-inflicted or by another member of the same hunting party. It really comes down to firearm handling to prevent accidental discharge.”

Pritzl explained that these types of accidents tend to happen more with the experienced hunter than someone who’s new to the sport.

“The folks most prone to have an accident are not the young, new hunters who have hunter education fresh in their minds, but the experienced hunters who can become complacent. That’s where accidents happen. We target this for safety messages for the 40- to 50-yearold hunters.”

Wildlife surveying

Pritzl said one thing hunters can help the DNR with while they’re in the field is to participate in the Deer Hunter Wildlife Survey.

“We’ve had this for some time now, but now we have a smart phone app to make it easier for the hunters to participate,” he said. “Every hunter can contribute and share their corner of the hunting world with this.”

Those interested can find the Wildlife Survey app on the DNR website at dnr. wi.gov.

“Every time someone goes hunting, they can report what they saw, where and when. It provides us with good information on what people are seeing in wildlife in a specific area. And now it’s pretty easy to do,” Pritzl said.

Archery season open

Deer hunters got their first opportunity to pursue deer this fall with the opening of the archery and crossbow deer season Sept. 17.

The DNR, in a news release, reminded all outdoor enthusiasts that safety is part of the fun, and urges hunters to review these four rules of safety (TAB-K) before enjoying the season:

T reat every bow/crossbow as if it were loaded;

A lways point the bow/crossbow in a safe direction;

B e certain of the target as well as what is before and beyond it; and

K eep fingers outside the crossbow trigger guard or archery release until ready to shoot.

When heading out to hunt during the archery or crossbow seasons, remember these additional safety tips:

• Crossbows have a safety –immediately after cocking, always check to make sure that the bow is on safe;

• Always use bolts/arrows recommended by the manufacturer and handle carefully;

• Protect yourself and the arrow points with a covered arrow quiver;

• The safest way to carry, transport and raise or lower a crossbow from a stand is always to have the crossbow un-cocked;

• The safest way to un-cock a crossbow is to fire a bolt into a safe target;

• Make sure that the limb tips are free of obstructions and that your fingers, hand or arm are not in the string path at any time while the crossbow is cocked;

• Never fire the bow or crossbow without firing an arrow or bolt from it (known as “dry firing”); and

• Know your range for accuracy.

Tree stand safety is also a key consideration throughout all the deer hunting seasons. Tree stand incidents are a leading cause of injury to hunters. Always wear a safety harness, use three points of contact when going into or out of the stand and use a haul line to bring the unloaded bow or crossbow into the stand. Let someone know where you are going and when you expect to return.

For more information on the upcoming deer season, read the Fall 2022-Spring 2023 Combined Hunting Regulations on the DNR website.

WINE GOES WITH weddings

Staller Estate Winery offers perfect space for events of all sizes

For every event – especially those special occasions that carry with them a lifetime of memories – everything has to be perfect.

The perfect location, the perfect refreshments, and if possible perfect weather.

While we can control the location the guest list, and the refreshments, the perfect weather is harder to control. But choosing a location that has beautiful spaces both indoors and out is the solution for a perfect event.

Located on the outskirts of Delavan along Highway A, Staller Estate Winery

is a pristine farm with multiple well-kept buildings painted in the traditional red and white that once dotted the Wisconsin countryside.

Once a dairy farm as many Wisconsin farms were, today this property has been transformed into a vineyard and winery – the perfect place to spend an afternoon enjoying the beautiful Wisconsin countryside while enjoying a glass of the wonderful wines produced.

It is the place to hold a birthday or anniversary party, a bachelorette party, bridal shower, or even just a casual get together with friends to enjoy a day out in the Wisconsin sunshine amidst the grape vines. And for some, the place to celebrate their wedding.

The winery is a welcoming place, able to accommodate visitors who may just stop for a wine tasting with friends on a pleasant afternoon. The sunroom and the gazebo are light and airy although on pleasant days, many prefer to be outside, sitting on the terrace or in the vineyards.

Warm greeting

Arriving at the winery, one is greeted

by Wendy Staller, owner, or another of the friendly and knowledgeable employees who will guide you in choosing a wine that you will enjoy.

There will be a sheet listing the wines available for you to order, either a glass or a wine flight of four, one-ounce pours of the wines of your choice.

Make it a picnic as you add a charcuterie board of fruits, nuts, cheese and meats, or just a cheese tray to enjoy with your wine.

The winery and vineyard are owned and run by Wendy and Joe Staller, who became interested in growing grapes for wine and producing that wine while still at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. Wendy Staller furthered her studies of wine making at the University of CaliforniaDavis.

What began as a hobby for Wendy Staller has now become a full-time activity. She oversees the growing of the grapes, creating the wine with Joe and overseeing the daily running of the winery and tasting room. It is Wendy who plans showers, bachelorette parties, and even weddings here at the winery.

The winery is the perfect place to hold

The rooms are climate controlled and as such, are available year-round. Participants are welcome to bring their own table decorations to add to the party atmosphere.

“Many bring floral centerpieces or balloons to add to the festivities,” said Wendy Staller. “While balloons and flowers are usually sufficient for bachelorette parties, more decorations are often brought for the bridal showers.”

In the fresh air

Another option that is popular, especially in the comfortable temperatures of autumn, is to move the event outside right into the vineyard. Imagine sitting at long tables with rows of grape vines on either side (by now most of the grapes have been harvested), while you enjoy a pleasant day celebrating with friends or family members at your wine event.

According to Wendy Staller, the facility can accommodate from five to 80 guests for the typical bachelorette event. They offer several packages for your guests to enjoy. Try the European lunch with flights of wines. This choice includes a wine flight

with imported Belgian Chocolates and a picnic platter of cheese, meats, and freshly baked bread.

Also included is a tour of the winery. Learn about the process from the planting and growth of the grapes, through the harvesting, pressing, crushing, destemming, and finally processing into the tasty wines produced today. Visitors will learn about the oak barrels used to age the wine and why they are used – and finally, the process for bottling the wines.

In addition to the packages available, they will gladly customize a package to suit you.

“I recommend that you book your event as soon as you decide on a day and time. The dates, especially in the nice weather, fill up fast,” said Wendy Staller.

Small events welcome

Looking for a place to hold a small- to moderate-sized wedding? Consider Staller Estate. With so many choices available as a site for the ceremony, your wedding will truly be unique. Have you thought about exchanging vows in the vineyard? Or perhaps you would prefer to do so in the gazebo?

Wendy will work with families to make the event special, including directing visitors to the perfect caterer if needed. Couples can just have the ceremony here or just the reception or best of all everything in this one beautiful location.

“We have seven varietals of grapes that we nurture and grow,” said Wendy Staller. “We added another acre to the vineyard

last year, making four acres devoted to vineyards, close to our capacity. We grow cold tolerant grapes that do well in the Midwest.”

Another addition to the winery is the Barrel Cellar. The barrel cellar is one of the newer spaces used for tasting – a cozy intimate space on the lower level. It is a true wine cellar where the temperature is maintained at 55-60 degrees, the perfect cellar temperature for serving red wines.

The décor is dim and intimate, the perfect place for a romantic evening for a couple. Enjoy a date, just the two of you in the Barrel Cellar, enjoying a special wine event.

The special Barrel Cellar event for two includes two wine flights paired with specialty truffles, a charcuterie and fromage board for two, two glasses of wine selected by the guests from the wine list, and two limited edition “Allure” Staller Estate wine glasses.

The cost is $99 plus tax per couple. The wine event in the Barrel Cellar usually lasts about two hours. Small groups, up to 10 can also be accommodated. Consider it for an engagement party or the spot to pop that important question or for just the two of you to celebrate an anniversary, birthday, or other special day.

Seasonal events

In addition to private events, there are seasonal events throughout the summer and fall sponsored by Staller Estate Winery that includes a variety of activities including wine with food trucks from local restaurants, yoga in the vineyard, and “Blooms+Bouquets,” one of the very popular events.

This season there are still two events to be held. On Sunday, Nov. 13, a Thanksgiving Wine and Dine Dinner will be held at the winery. The dinner will be a five-course, Thanksgiving-themed and

locally curated meal which will be paired with the appropriate Staller Estate wines.

The meal will be created by local chef Maria Halpin, and Wendy Staller will pair the wines, with assistance from Joe Staller.

“While we don’t have the complete meal and wine menu at this time,” aid Staller. “Possibilities for some of the courses are roasted pumpkin soup, braised short ribs, and shredded Brussel sprouts with apples, cranberries and walnuts. The plan for dessert is gingerbread tiramisu. The wines have not yet been chosen.”

The dinner will be held from noon to 2:30 p.m. Purchase tickets online soon, as they are going quickly.

The final social event is the yearly Deer Widows weekends on Saturday, Nov. 19

from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. This Ladies Day event will feature a variety of local vendors and new drink specials. Enjoy the weekend with other “deer hunting widows.”

Wines available now include white wines oaked Sauvignon Blanc, the regular Sauvignon Blanc, the blush Sunset Cuvee, and in the reds, the Sun-gria, a bright red wine with fresh fruit flavors.

In the dessert wine category, the Pardo Classico aged in a bourbon barrel is now available. It is described as “a strong robust tawny character wine balanced with a mature grape complexity and oak developed wisdom.” If you haven’t tasted it yet, now is the time.

Staller Estate Winery has embarked on a new venture. They are now a working distillery and are producing their own brandy. The first batch will be ready next year, as it needs to age in the oak barrel before it is ready to be bottled and sold.

Staller Estate Winery is located at W8896 County Road A, Delavan. Reach them by phone at 608-883-2100 or visit online at www.stallerestate.com.

Email wendy@stallerestate.com for reservations or visit on Facebook. Watch Facebook for the In Vino Veritas programs presented by Wendy and Joe Staller who will share a variety of wine topics with you including the art of pairing wines with foods to bring out the best tastes in both the wines and the foods.

ABBEY SPRINGS

While there are several amenities that draw couples to Abbey Springs to celebrate their wedding, it is the lakefront wedding space that entices many.

Being part of a golf course community the grounds are impeccably groomed. The grass is green and weed free while decorative flowers, bushes and trees add to the beauty and serenity of the space.

The main clubhouse banquet room, on a hill across the street from the lakefront ceremony platform, will hold up to 200 guests and has a dance floor for the reception.

The elegant wooden bar, built specifically for this room covers an entire wall and adds to the ambience of the room. Depending on the size of the event, it may be held at the waterfront in the white tent or in the ballroom. For smaller events the Yacht Club dining room isjust the right size.

Abbey Springs is at 1 Country Club Lane in Fontana. Reach them by telephone at 262-275-6113 or visit abbeysprings.org for a preview of the facility.

It is reminiscent of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Prairie style.

Many wedding ceremonies are held on the stone patio against a background of lush landscaping and a gently flowing waterfall. An indoor ceremony can be held right in front of the windows, taking advantage of the landscaping in the background.

As customers walk into the secondfloor space of Bon Bon Belle Bridal in downtown Burlington, they can’t help but notice the open space, the abundant lighting – and the wall of wedding dressings for sale.

Giving brides the best in saying‘yes ’

“We pride ourselves on really finding quality dresses,” general manager Lindsay Webster said, in her second year in the job. “It’s the most important garment that someone ever buys, really.”

Webster said she joined the staff after having her own wedding at The Merchantile.

“I said, ‘I want to be a part of that family,’” said Webster. “Two weeks after my wedding, I started.”

Located at 425 N. Pine St. #202, Burlington – on the second floor of The Merchantile building – Bon Bon Belle has evolved over the years. Originally Christy’s Bridal in a small store at 489 Milwaukee Ave., the store transitioned to The Merchantile space in August of 2017 after the former Schuette Daniel’s furniture store burned. Shad Branen bought the space and turned it into a wedding venue.

“Our business skyrocketed,” Webster said about the move. “We wanted more of that downtown loft kind of feel. We’re finding that more bridges want that experience.”

The wide-open space on the second floor has six different dressing rooms, including ones with doors for those who want a more private and intimate experience. There are even two side-by-side spaces, which can and have been used for same-sex couples to purchase dresses without seeing what the

other is wearing.

“We have them both going at the same time,” Webster said. “We can see them, but they can’t see each other.”

The store is inclusive in other ways. Dresses range from petite size 2 all the way to plus-size 34. Most dresses can be ordered in any size, and Webster suggests starting to shop for a gown nine months ahead of the wedding. A gown can take 3-4 months to come in.

The store does not handle alterations in store, but suggests a two-month window to allow for them to be done.

“Our motto is, ‘everyone fits here,’” Webster said, who added that she had some trouble finding a plus-size dress for herself for her wedding. “It was a big thing for me when I started, that we had that inclusivity.”

And the options are there. Trends with dresses vary, as Webster explained.

“It definitely goes in waves,” she said. “Show off as much as possible ... and then everybody wants more of a flowy, boho look. You get the people who want to be more trendy, and then the people who want to be more relaxed.”

The store has several lines that it trusts –so much so that Webster said they are really not being affected by supply chain issues.

Among those is Essence Designs, which has several umbrella brands under them –and Bon Bon Belle carries all of them. Most of the stores operate out of the United States, but the dresses are sewn in other countries to reduce the cost of labor.

The price points on the dress vary, ranging from $1,500 to just under $4,000. There are also trunk sales and the store’s semi-annual blowout sales to help brides who are on a budget.

If the bride says yes to a dress from the store, she gets a free gift and a champagne toast at Bon Bon Belle’s new “Bubbly Bar.” There are non-alcoholic options available for those who don’t want champagne. There are no service fees or cancellations for appointments during regular hours, and private bookings are available for a fee.

With weddings now coming pretty much year round – it’s more than just May to September, Webster explained – the goal is to cater to everyone’s diverse needs.

“I get to help brides find the dress they’re going to say ‘yes’ in,” Webster said. “Your ordinary day is someone’s extraordinary day. I love that we get to be a part of that.”

For more information on the store, call 262-767-8850.

It’s apple time!

Fall is picking season throughout the area

Autumn is apple time.

It’s the time when the apple orchards of the area begin to harvest their current crop of fresh ripe apples and offer them for sale. While many may think of apples as large, red, sweet fruit, in reality, apples come in a variety of colors, sizes, and tastes.

Apples are among the most popular fruits enjoyed. They may be eaten fresh off the tree, covered with caramel for the traditional fall treat, baked into apple pies or other sweet desserts, cooked into applesauce or into pork or chicken dishes.

Whichever way you choose to enjoy them, apples will be delicious and they will add flavor to cooked dishes.

Apples may be red, green, or yellow depending on the variety and may be sweet or tart.

While the sweet apples are generally eaten fresh, tart apples are favored for cooking or baking. With so many varieties grown in the southern Wisconsin area that ripen throughout the fall season, it is difficult to taste each variety but give it a try.

Apples are said to be healthy. Everyone has heard “an apple a day keeps the doctor away,” which was reported to have been first coined in 1913. Whether that is true or not, the apple has multiple health benefits.

According to the Mayo Clinic, apples are a good source of soluble fiber and antioxidants, which is believed to lower blood cholesterol and glucose levels. Fresh apples are also a good source of Vitamin C – an antioxidant that protects body cells from damage.

Other health benefits of apples are also being studied.

With a low calorie count of only 95 calories in the average apple, they are the perfect healthy snack. They are easily transported and are the most frequently seen fruit in packed lunches as they hold up well.

Enjoy a beautiful fall day and take a trip to one or more of the local apple orchards and sample some of the just-harvested apples and bring home new varieties for your family to enjoy. Visitors may also be tempted to bring home some apple pies, apple cider, and apple cider donuts.

The Apple Barn Orchard and Winery W6384 Sugar Creek Road Elkhorn • 262-728-3266

The Apple Barn is among the oldest of the farms owned by the same family in the

Walworth County area.

The farm itself was started as a dairy farm in 1848 and continues to be owned and run by the sixth generation of the Jacobson family.

In 1985, Steve and Judy Jacobson planted 40 acres of apple trees. That was the beginning of the farm truly being identified as an orchard. These early 40 acres have been increased, now holding 4,000 apple trees with 12 popular varieties of apples spread over many more acres.

At the Apple Barn, it is possible to find anything apple. Along with freshly picked, in-season apples, the aroma of freshly baked goods – many containing apples – pulls the visitor over to the bakery counter where the homemade goods seem to be quickly disappearing.

Whether it is a freshly made apple pie, the apple cider donuts, or other fine freshly baked items, such as a pumpkin chocolate chip cookie or perhaps a fresh caramel apple, it is not possible to pass the counter without purchasing something.

Be careful of the apple cider donuts, as many visitors purchase a bag to take home to the family only to find there will be fewer in the bag by the time they reach home. The aroma of the donuts in the closed automobile, especially if the driver and others riding along are hungry, is hard

top: The apple orchards are filled with trees bearing fruit in the fall. Picking the apples at the peak of freshness is important for optimum taste. Today most orchard trees are the dwarf varieties so they are easier to harvest and require less space in the orchard. inset: When we think of apples this is how most people picture them – large, smooth, bright red and ready to eat.

to ignore.

Fall is also a time of caramel apples. The ones sold here are freshly made with their own just picked apples, sweet and tasty, much more appealing than packaged store varieties.

Fresh apple cider is created and sold on site. Other locally produced products such as locally sourced Wisconsin cheese, locally produced honey, jams, maple syrup and novelty items are available.

The Apple Barn is also well known for its award-winning fruit wines that Steve Jacobson began creating on site. Their Honey Crisp Apple Harvest wine was the winner of Best Fruit Wine of Wisconsin at the Inaugural Wine Wisconsin Fest at the University of Wisconsin Madison. It is a semi sweet wine made from 100% Honey Crisp Apples.

Visit their website www. applebarnorchardandwinery.com or visit them on Facebook for latest in available apples, self-picking dates, and upcoming events. Fall hours are Tuesday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Closed Monday.

Brightonwoods Orchard

1072 288th Avenue

Burlington • 262-878-3000

What began as a weekend retreat in 1950 with a small, three-acre hobby orchard has grown to an 18.5-acre orchard with

approximately 4,000 dwarf and semi-dwarf apple trees.

Brightonwoods continued to preserve the heirloom varieties of apples from the past while adding the newer commercial varieties popular today.

The orchard continues to be a family

run orchard, featuring more than 150 apple varieties along with both seeded and seedless grapes, quince, and pears. The apples are offered for sale on the grounds.

While some orchards allow guests to pick their own apples, Brightonwoods does not. They do not allow self-picking to prevent damage to some of the older trees. They do, however, allow visitors to walk through the orchards and enjoy the beauty of the land and the trees loaded with fresh, fragrant apples.

Children are welcome. There are picnic tables set up in the yard and the two-story tree house is a favorite of visiting children. There are also trails through the woods where families are welcome to enjoy the beauty of the fall colors.

Current apples available for sale will be found in the apple barn. The varieties that are ripe vary as the season moves forward. If a favorite apple is not available, they encourage visitors to try a different variety, especially to try a one that is new to that person. There are no bad choices, just different choices.

Along with apples sold on site, there are locally sourced squash, gourds and honey from a nearby neighbor’s farm, along with maple syrup, and locally made cheese curds.

Other Wisconsin cheeses are available for purzchase to take home or enjoy while sitting at the picnic tables. Jams and jellies, also locally made, are available. Don’t forget to pick up one or more of the baking mixes

to prepare an apple pie or apple crisp.

Fall is the time to enjoy freshly made apple cider. Brightonwoods cider is pasteurized for safety. Visitors can enjoy a glass while visiting or purchase a bottle to take home for the Halloween season. Look for the orange truck with the fresh hot apple cider donuts. Enjoy one here or take more home.

Looking to start an apple orchard or just to have a great apple tree at home? One-year-old grafted and potted apple and pear trees are available for sale.

Fall means time for Halloween and pumpkins. Brightonwoods has a variety of locally grown pumpkins available for sale in a variety of sizes. Everyone needs their own pumpkin to carve or decorate.

Brightonwoods Orchard is open Tuesday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Nov. 20. They are closed on Monday.

Hafs Road Orchard • N632 Hafs Rd Genoa City • 262-279-3638

In the late 1930s, Hafs Orchard was started by the Hafs family with the planting of 400 standard-sized apple trees of 25 different varieties of apples.

The orchard was purchased by Richard and Debbie Polansky in 1982, who continued to expand the orchard.

In 1992, the Polanskys planted their first Honey Crisp apple trees as a trial. What began as a small 60-tree project has grown to over 2,000 Honey Crisp trees as customers have embraced the Honey Crisp apple.

“Even our caramel apples are made with fresh Honey Crisps,” shared Debby Polansky. “Then we add pecans or peanuts to add to the flavor.”

Of the original full-size trees, about 12 remain. The additional trees currently producing apples now number about 3,000, with 50 varieties of apples represented. All of the newer trees are dwarf trees, allowing more apples to be produced per acre.

The Polanskys have maintained the quiet country charm that customers love. They continue to pick their apples by hand and offer the different varieties as they come into season. Self-picking is not allowed.

In addition to the fresh apples, they offer a variety of “apple related products.” Try their fresh sweet cider. Their Honey Crisp apple cider syrup will add to the flavor of your pancakes, waffles or French toast.

Visit Hafs Road Orchard in person or on line at www. hafsroadorchard.com. They are located just 7 miles east of Lake Geneva. Fall hours are Monday through Thursday noon to 5 p.m. Friday through Sunday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
