Celebrate local libraries and their offerings

For many growing up, the public library was a home away from home. It was the place where we went to learn more about the world, especially in days before internet was in everyone’s home. It was here that we became acquainted with books and stories that took us out of our comfort zone and into the world of people and places from all over the world.

As children, some of us travelled the world solving mysteries with Sherlock Holmes, or closer to home with Nancy Drew or the Hardy Boys. We learned about

England while reading Jane Austin’s books or sharing the home of the March family while their father was off to war, as we read Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women.

Through our love of reading, we visited countries that we believed we would never visit in person yet surprisingly many of us have done so. Travelling in our minds through countries such as Germany, Brazil, France, Japan, Australia, and New Zealand, we enjoyed their beautiful mountains and oceans, and learned about their ways of life.

Back in the early days of libraries, they were buildings filled with books, books that could be enjoyed at the library or taken home to be read at one’s leisure. Now times have changed and libraries, while still having a plethora of books to read, offer many more services.

The library has become the place to gather and learn, offering not only books but use of computers and book clubs to share our knowledge of books. There are programs presented either in person or

virtually, story hours for children, and a variety of craft and Makerspace programs for children and adults.

Today the library is still important in one’s life, helping us to learn and grow. Most communities have a library and many of them date back to the 1800s.

‘There is More to the Story’

National Library Week was first sponsored by the American Library Association and libraries across the United States in 1958. The purpose was to motivate people to read and support local libraries. That very first National Library Week shared the theme “Wake Up and Read.”

This year, National Library Week will be observed the week of April 23 to 30 and the theme will be “There is More to the Story.”

Stories are found in a variety of formats from the picture books enjoyed by those who have not mastered reading, to large-print books for those whose vision is fading. Books are also available as 3-books and audiobooks so everyone can enjoy the stories.

This year’s theme, “There is More to the Story,” takes library patrons past the stories told in books and show them the many other ways libraries share that there is definitely more to the story. They provide museum passes, games, musical instruments, and in some cases even tools that can be taken out for home use.

Libraries bring residents of the area together for entertainment, and educational programs. They help us connect with others through book clubs, story times, movie nights, crafting classes, internet and tech classes along with access to technology they may not have available at home.

As National Library Week approaches, take the time to check out the activities available at your local library, and if you haven’t been a regular user of your library spend some time there and become acquainted with all that your library has to offer.

Here are some of the local libraries, and their plans to share National Library Week with you. Check their websites closer to National Library week for any additions to their programs.

While the Aram Public Library did not become a reality until after the deaths of James and Susan Aram, who donated funds to create a library in memory of their three daughters who passed away at an early age. Delavan first had a library in 1885 under the Caxton Plan.

The Caxton Library Company of Chicago offered communities a plan where 100 residents would pay $1 a year for two years and 200 books would be provided. The books were stored at

In 1889, the Delavan Lake Library Association was formed at the home of Mrs. P.R. King who donated more than 500 books to the library. The books were available for loan by any lake resident at no cost.

After the death of Susan Aram in 1905, the plans for the creation of the building of the Aram Library became a reality. Plans for the building of the library progressed and the library today continues to grow and expand to serve the needs of the citizens of Delavan.

Library Director Michelle Carter said. “We have several activities for National Library Week scheduled to share with the community.”

On Monday, April 24, at 10 a.m. Aram will kick off National Library Week with story time with Delavan Mayor Ryan Schroeder. Storytime will be followed with coffee and donuts, Carter said.

On Tuesday, April 25, the National Library Week festivities will continue in the afternoon from 4 to 6 p.m. That afternoon a meet and greet will be held with Library Trustee Linda Zell, which will include refreshments.

Additionally, a recycled Books Craft Drop-in will be open to all ages on Tuesday.

If you don’t have a library card, National Library Week is the time to sign up for one and choose some good books to read.

Matheson Memorial Library

101 N. Wisconsin • Elkhorn 262-723-2678 • www.elkhorn.lib.wi.us

The Matheson Memorial Library was first opened in Elkhorn in 1901 by local attorney Edward Harvey Sprague, who created it and named it in honor of his son Charles Edward Sprague who passed away at the age of 20. Onethousand volumes were originally donated to the library, a few of which have survived until current times.

In the 1930s William John Matheson purchased the land where the Matheson Library now stands and donated it to the city as a memorial to his parents, Finlay and Anna, along with full funding to build a library.

This building was sufficient until 1980 when changes in library services demanded more space. An addition of 4,500 square feet was added in 1990 and another addition of 14,000 square feet, which included more library space and a community center was added in 2004.

Chad Robinson, director of the Matheson Memorial Library, shared the plans for the library to celebrate National Library Week.

“We will begin by offering food for fines. Donations of canned foods can be made in place of paying fines. The food will be donated to the Elkhorn Food Bank and given to those in need,” Robinson said.

Throughout the week, there will be several activities. The Love My Library event will give both adults and children a chance to fill out a card telling why they love their library. These cards will be displayed both in the library and on social media.

“Throughout the week we will have a library scavenger hunt,” Robinson said. “There will be clues all over the library, with treasures in every nook and cranny, along with displays and art exhibits for visitors to enjoy.”

Pick up a scavenger hunt clues sheet and begin to search the library. Patrons may find their way into parts of the library that they don’t normally visit. Once completed, the sheets are turned into the library and entered into a drawing. The winning sheet drawn will be given an Amazon gift card.

And finally on Thursday, of National Library Week, the library will celebrate Patron Appreciation Day when cookies, coffee and donuts will be available for patrons. Enjoy the day and while at the library, find a new and exciting book to take out and enjoy.

Friday, April 28, the library will be closed for its semiannual staff in-service.

Enjoy the outdoors by upgrading the space

With spring in the air, it’s time to move outdoors and enjoy outside spaces.

Looking at those spaces, repairing them, updating them or even replacing them becomes a springtime project. So will dressing up those spaces with colorful flowers or a few new bushes to make the spaces perfect.

For many families, where to begin the project of turning their property into the attractive oasis that they envision seems overwhelming. Do they begin with replacing the deck, adding new flowers, or replacing the fence? Is the lawn in need of work? Is this something they can begin to work on

themselves or do they need the help of a professional?

If landscape and hardscape need a major revision, calling a professional is always the best first step. The professionals will work with homeowners to help turn a vision into a beautiful space to enjoy with family, or work with them to help design that perfect space.

The Reesman Co. in Burlington has provided these services for more than 50 years. As a family owned company, Reesman treats each project as if they were completing it for their own family.

“We encourage homeowners to call us so we can work with them to turn their vision into a viable hardscape,” said Chris Reesman, president of the Reesman Co.

The company encourages a meeting with the homeowner, setting out the vision of the project. In this first session, the company will also share what the property needs in order to accomplish the homeowner’s dreams.

Reesman Co. employees will consider whether there is a need for adding drainage, or a need for building retaining walls to stop

erosion. The designer will use a variety of tools to develop the design, beginning with detailed sketches and computer-aided design plans to create the possibilities for the space.

Hardscapes

Today’s patios are no longer just a simple place to sit. Homeowners expect their outdoor spaces to be an extension of their home and as such, to be as beautifully finished as their inside spaces.

In past times, a simple stone, cement or wood deck was all that was expected – a space to put their grill and a place to sit. Today with higher expectations, outdoor spaces are often very complex and beautiful. While looking at the more comprehensive plan of a professional, homeowners see the true potential for their property.

Of course, the extent of the project may be dependent on the budget. Sometimes, if major landscaping, a deck, and high-end features are desired, the project may be needed to be built in stages.

Patios today may still be the typical wood

deck but more families are looking to replace that either with one made from composite wood or to one built of pavers, all in an effort to eliminate some of the maintenance involved with a traditional wood deck.

But it is brick pavers that are often requested by homeowners today. Today’s patio may be much larger than spaces built in the past and may have different areas for use by the adults or the children. Spaces for cooking and eating, game playing or just relaxing by the fire pit or the pool may be included.

When planning a deck, remember to keep in mind how the sun affects the area. Do you need a pergola to shade the area or are additional trees and shrubs all that is needed? These are all concerns that can be addressed by the professionals.

Throughout the Midwest, mosquitoes are always a problem for those trying to enjoy outdoor time. While the use of control sprays will help control the mosquitoes, they do add chemicals to the air. The other method of controlling the mosquitoes is to keep the air moving. Adding ceiling fans to the pergola may help.

Outdoor kitchens

When it is time to choose the method of outdoor cooking that is best, there are a

number of choices to consider. Some still enjoy a simple charcoal barbecue, while others look for a more complex outdoor kitchen.

If you are looking for an outdoor cooker, check out a variety of outdoor models, as there are some that can grill, bake, smoke, roast, braise or barbecue. There are a wide variety of cooking materials, including charcoal, gas, wood or pellets. Models are also free standing, or can be built in a kitchen with a hood. Lyle’s Appliances in Elkhorn offers a variety of outdoor cookers including The Green Egg, Traeger and Broil King.

Outdoor refrigerators and kegerators are also available for use in an outdoor kitchen. Water and fire features are both popular additions. Adding a fire pit to the outdoor space encourages gatherings around the pit in

the evenings. The fire helps make it the social hub of the gathering. Families also can enjoy the fire pit as a way to enjoy making and eating s’mores with children.

While families often think of fire pits for use in the evenings when the weather cools down and the beauty of the fire may be enjoyed against the dark sky, daytime fires are also enjoyable on cooler days and allow outside use into the fall. Depending what the budget allows, another fire choice is a full fireplace.

Water features

Water features also add a relaxing ambience to the space. Whether one enjoys watching a fountain, listening to the soft sounds of the water rippling over the stones, enjoying a beautiful pond – perhaps with

SPIRIT of GENEVA LAKES 15

some koi fish swimming in it – water can be perfect for providing a sense of beauty and peace.

While water features are beautiful, it is important to understand the amount of maintenance necessary to keep them in perfect working order.

Swimming pools, even here in the Midwest where they can only be used for part of the year, are a popular addition to outdoor spaces. Once again, cost and maintenance are important to understand before adding a pool to outdoor space. Remember that a pool also requires a fence around it for safety, to protect young children from falling into the pool.

While adding all this to an outdoor space may be what is desired, you may find that it is necessary to begin slowly adding on to the space, maybe over several years before everything is finished.

Fencing

Fences are also an important part of the outdoor look of your home. Selecting the style and material of the perfect fence can be found at Aronson Fencing, which provides fencing for both northern Illinois and southeastern Wisconsin.

“People build fences for basically two purposes – to keep their children or their dogs on the property and safe, and to keep strangers out,” said Roger Aronson, owner and founder of Aronson Fencing. “It also serves to add a finished, attractive look to your property.”

Aronson offers a variety of fences, including cedar fences, aluminum fences or polyvinyl fences. Each of

Floral accents on a patio or deck add a splash of color and beauty to your outdoor space.

these fences has a different price point and style.

The company’s cedar fences are made from high quality cedar cut three-quarters of an inch thick, thicker than the industry standard of one-half inch thick, producing a sturdier fence. Wood fences can be custom created to give the home a unique look by changing the spacing, the width or the height of the boards. The most popular height for fences is four feet but privacy fences can be built as high as six feet.

Wood fences tend to last 12 to 18 years and do require maintenance, either sealing or painting. Painting the fence will need to be redone every few years. Yet they are often favorites for their unique styling .

Unlike the wood fences that are custom

made for your property, vinyl fences are often a choice because they are available in more than 30 styles and come in a variety of colors to match or enhance home décor. They last many years and are virtually maintenance free. They can be individualized with the addition of decorative caps to the vinyl posts. The caps have an antique copper look or the appearance of sleek stainless steel. To add a glitzy look to the fence, LED, eco-friendly lights can be added to the posts.

Metal ornamental fences are one of the most popular fences used for a sleek custom look. Unlike wood fences, which are custom cut, the metal ornamental fence is created in the factory after the customer has chosen the style and the site has been measured for

accurate coverage.

Metal fences are often used around a pool as they have a clean look and provide safety. Having a metal fence around the pool also allows one to view into the pool from the outside, thus increasing the safety.

Chain link fences are often used for security, because they are easy to install and require little maintenance while being durable and secure. But they are not as attractive as wood or metal fences.

If looking for a new fence, contact Aronson for an appointment with an estimator either at your home at their showroom in Wauconda. They will help choose the style of fence for your needs and that will give property the very best look. They also will work to remain in your budget.

Lighting up YOUR LIFE AND HOME

spring arrives, we look at our homes with new eyes, viewing what once seemed so bright and fashionable, now appears somewhat dated and in need of replacement.

While we may add a new coat of paint to the walls, or perhaps update the curtains, that is usually the extent of the changes we add in the spring, a time when we become more focused on the outdoors.

But there is another way to add beauty and update the look of the home without turning to major renovations. Visit Caravelle Lighting in Richmond, Illinois,

and consider upgrading the light fixtures in your home to make them more in line with the way you live today.

Light fixtures are often thought of as a permanent part of the home as they are usually chosen when the house is built or changed when the home is purchased. But light fixtures, like carpet, cabinets, and paint colors do become outdated. The fixtures picked years ago reflect the styles of those days, which are much different from the looks and needs popular today.

“Today a popular look in light fixtures is focused on an organic, textured look and includes materials such as jute, rattan, wicker, and even wood accents,” said Joe Kroupa, second generation owner of Caravelle Lighting. “The look is light and

airy and warm.”

While this may be the current trendy look, Kroupa said choosing the look for your home may be far different from what your neighbor may choose. Therefore, it is important that before one makes a choice that they look at a variety of styles to find the best one for their lifestyle and the style of their home.

“We recommend coming into the store not only to see what is available but also to spend some time with us so that we get to know the customer and their style,” Kroupa advised. “Once we know them and understand the look they are trying to achieve, finding the correct fixture becomes much easier.”

Prior to coming into the store, Kroupa

recommends going to the Caravelle website, www.caravellelight.com, and viewing the many types of fixtures available.

Caravelle Lighting has been familyowned and operated for more than 40 years. First opened in the Chicago area, the family moved the business to Richmond in 1990. Since that time, they have continued to provide a variety of lighting needs and decorative accessories from this location for northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin.

The 5,000-square-foot showroom holds a complete line of lighting and related products from more than 50 manufacturers. Additional items can also be special ordered as needed.

Size and scale

A first visit to Caravelle can be mind boggling as one peruses the many ceiling fixtures hanging on display. The problem is often not in finding the fixture of your dreams but in finding several that meet those dreams and having to determine which is the very best one for the space. With the help of a professional, one who

has had years of experience working with homeowners, customers can find what they need to fit the correct size and style fixtures in their space.

Kroupa said it isn’t only the style and material of the light that is important but the correct scale for the room that must be considered.

A solid fixture may appear to be larger than an open one while in reality the solid one may be inches smaller. To create the perfect lighting size for your room, the staff member working with you, will use a formula to determine the correct size fixture for your space.

“There is no charge to work with you to make these decisions,” Kroupa said. “Our goal is to help you make the best decision possible so that you are pleased with your purchases for many years. If you find a picture of a light that you really like, bring it in. They probably have the same picture or one very similar.”

Chandeliers

While crystal chandeliers may be your dream, many of today’s are very different

from the drop crystal chandeliers of the past. No longer a need to detach the crystals and wash each one and replace it on the chandelier. No need to replace the many light bulbs that may be included in the fixture.

Today the crystal chandelier is often lit by an integrated LED system. An LED is a light-emitting diode which produces light up to 90% more efficiently than the incandescent bulbs that have traditionally been used. There are no individual bulbs to change.

Ceiling fans

Ceiling fans made their appearance in homes in the 1920s, before home air conditioning, as a way to keep the home cooler during the hot days of summer.

While they declined in use with the appearance of air conditioning in homes, it was not long before homeowners realized that the use of the ceiling fan, along with the air conditioning, allowed them to raise the temperature in the home and still be comfortable as the air is moved around.

Today’s fans have a very different look than those original fans. Most of the early

fans had five blades, usually large to move the air. Today the ceiling fans have again gained popularity but they are very different from these early fans.

Most of the fans are three- or four-blade fans and although they may be much smaller in size, move more air. Some of the newer fans are surrounded by a light fixture and have clear blades, making them almost invisible

These new style fans are known as fandoliers, because they combine the ceiling fan and the light fixture. They provide an attractive light fixture and still allow for the ceiling fan to move the air. The fans with DC motors are quieter, less wobbly, and move air better.

Lamps and more

As customers meander through the store, they will be attracted to a variety of table lamps, floor lamps, side tables, and other decorative accessories to add to the beauty of your home. Some tables have lamps

integrated in them. The store also has tables that light up with an integrated LED light along the edges.

“We carry a lot of stained glass fixtures and lamps. We will probably always carry them as they do remain popular with customers,” Kroupa said.

The stained glass features, whether hanging fixtures, lamps, or decorative pieces to place on a side table, add color to the room.

Outdoor spaces

Outdoor lights have also been upgraded. No longer the lamp-shaped light next to the door but an assortment of LED fixture, sleek with clear or frosted glass and black edging that will a new look to outside spaces.

Priced right

People often believe that they will save money by purchasing at a big box store or through e-commerce, but Kroupa said that is not usually the case. Caravelle Lighting carries a variety of fixtures at all price points to suit everyone’s budget. They can order whatever fixture a customer is interested in purchasing.

Often fixtures purchased that may seem to be less expensive are only so because they do not contain all the items needed to install them, Kroupa said. These may need to be purchased separately, bringing the cost up. Such things as the wiring or drop posts if you have a very high ceiling, may not be included. So, in the end the price may be even higher than if you start with a lighting store such as Caravelle.

Repair services

Caravelle Lighting is not just the place to go to purchase new fixtures. They are also the place to come for repairs. They offer full repairs on fixtures and lamps and rewiring as needed. They also carry a large supply of replacement bulbs and replacement lamp shades.

So, if you have shopped around for new lighting and haven’t found what you are looking for or if you are just beginning to look at new fixtures and are learning about the new types of lighting available, it is time for a trip to Caravelle Lighting where one of their knowledgeable employees can

answer your questions and help you find what you need.

“Our purpose is not to try to sell any one style over the other. We are here to point out differences and get to know your preferences. As we learn more about your likes and dislikes, we can help you in your choices. But in the end, it is the customer who makes the final choice,” Kroupa said.

Caravelle Lighting is at 9307 Highway 12, Richmond, Illinois. They can be reached by phone at 815-678-4558. Or visit them at www.caravellelight.com.

The store is open for your visit Tuesday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

50 years later …

Long-time Lakeland volunteer honored

Arlene Torrenga may have 50 years experience in volunteering with Lakeland Health Care Center, but her roots began inauspiciously.

As Torrenga explained March 5 at LHCC, she originally started volunteering as part of an initiative at her church, where people would go to spend time with the elderly at what was then called Lakeland Nursing Home.

“My first experience was … not the best,” Torrenga recalled.

Torrenga’s first efforts weren’t necessarily received well. The first person she visited didn’t speak English, the second gave her one-word answers.

The third? Well, that woman flat told Torrenga, “I hate it here.”

Said Torrenga, “I was like, ‘What do I say next?”

But Torrenga persevered, coming back and even making progress with the third woman – who apologized the next time they met. That led Torrenga to bringing her family over to the care facility for its Christmas party that year, and many times since.

That same family was present March 5

as Torrenga was recognized for her 50 years of volunteer work, much of which has been spent singing for and with the residents. In fact, Sunday is the day Torrenga traditionally stops by to sing hymns with the residents.

It’s how the care facility managed to surprise Torrenga with flowers and cake, as well as family members in the audience.

Colleen Lesniak, the Walworth County Volunteer Services Coordinator, said she basically began her career with Torrenga, adding that she’s “known and loved” the woman in her time there.

“She had a life-long passion of giving back,” said Lesniak. “It is my great pleasure to just say ‘thank you.’”

Torrenga received a certificate of appreciation from Walworth County Administrator Mark Luberda along with Lesniak, as well as another from the care center itself.

After Lesniak finished the presentation, one of the residents shouted out, “We love you!”

Torrenga appeared stunned, and admitted, “This is a real surprise.”

She then went into the history that led to her long-time service with the care facility.

Torrenga admitted her first experience with the elderly at the care facility didn’t go as planned. The third woman, in fact, gave Torrenga a small piece of her mind when she tried to console her.

“I said, ‘Well, if you have a warm bed to sleep in and food to eat and family and friends … she said, ‘You can preach all you want, but I hate it here.’”

Torrenga walked out thinking, “I don’t know about this,” but she came back the next month. When she went in to visit that woman, she was asked, “Are you that lady from Delavan?”

When Torrenga said yes, the woman told her, “Oh, I have to apologize to you. I was just really rude to you.”

Torrenga came a few more times, and then returned for the Christmas party with her children. She convinced the woman to join in the party, and went and sung during the gathering.

The volunteer coordinator said Torrenga had a beautiful singing voice, which started Torrenga’s long-time service. The hymn singing began when her mother was a resident at LHCC.

“I just learned from her that you should be humble and do things for others,” Torrenga said.

Eventually, her family would come and join in at the Christmas parties, with her husband, Bob, always singing the “Five Golden Rings” verse.

As the cake was passed out March 5, Torrenga led the visitors and residents in a favorite hymn, “How Great Thou Art,” which Torrenga said, “I’ve sung here so many years.”

She said Monday that the children at Sunday’s recognition were her brother’s grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

“I was just really pleased,” Torrenga said.

If interested in volunteering, contact the Walworth County Volunteer Services Coordinator by calling 262-741-4223.

Camp Timber-lee to stay open

AREA PHILANTHROPIST PURCHASING CAMP

When Gregg Kunes heard Camp Timberlee in East Troy was going to close, he said he was compelled to act. So, he decided to purchase the Christian camp.

“We’re working through the red tape right now to purchase the camp and keep it open,” Kunes said. “The desire is to keep the Christian camp open.”

Kunes, who is the president and founder of Kunes Country Auto Group, said they are working to keep this year’s programming intact, including the annual Burn Camp, which is sponsored by the Professional Firefighters of Wisconsin Charitable Foundation.

“Burn Camp is returning this summer,” Kunes said. “That’s in our heart to continue.”

While Kunes said he didn’t want to get

into details of the purchase of the camp until the sale closed, he was going to buy the camp and eventually turn it into a nonprofit.

“It’s going to take a lot of volunteers and donors to keep the camp going long-term,” he said. “We’re looking at putting the right people in place and continue with a good staff. It’s one thing to buy the camp; it’s another thing to sustain it in the long run.”

Kunes said they were looking at all the camp’s programming for this year to see what they can continue.

“It’s a process,” he said. “But we know we’re going to need volunteers and donors to help with that.”

BURN CAMP

The organizers of Burn Camp were sent scrambling, looking for a new venue when it was announced last month that

Camp Timber-lee was closing. The camp is celebrating its 29th year in 2023.

While the Professional Firefighters of Wisconsin Charitable Foundation hasn’t officially announced Burn Camp is returning to Timber-lee this summer, Kunes said they are in talks to make this year’s camp happen at Timber-lee. Burn Camp is planned for Aug. 13 to 19 this year.

According to the Burn Camp website, “Burn Camp is a free, week-long, overnight summer camp experience for kids with life-changing burn injuries to grow their lifelong support system, continue to heal from the emotional trauma of their burns, and just be a kid. The dedication and participation of more than 100 burn survivors and volunteers makes this camp special for everyone who attends.”

For more information on Burn Camp, visit pffwcf.org.
