Lena Lions name 2017 Fall Festival Parade Grand Marshals By Tony Carton EDITOR
Throughout the years Grand Marshals for the Lena Fall Festival Parade have been a “who’s who” of the teachers, business owners and public servants from the Lena area. This year is no exception. “Each year we select someone to serve as Parade Grand Marshal that has made an impact in our area,” said Lena Lions Fall Festival CoChair Bill Crichton. “This year Lions Club International is celebrating 100 years as Lions. So we decided to extend this honor within our club, and we felt there were two members that deserve the honor. Gary Meyers has served at many levels of our local club, but chose to go into the district ranks and served as District Governor, while continuing to stay rooted in all our club activities. Joel Kaufman has been a member of the Lena Lions for over 30 years. With Joel’s commitment to Lions, he too has held many positions within our club and the district. Both men are a very important part of the Lena Lions and we congratulate them both.” Joel Kaufman Kaufman became a Lena Lion in 1980. “I joined because I wanted to be of service to people and do things for folks that need help,” said Kaufman. “When I was younger my dad belonged to the Lions over in Stockton and that kind of pushed me a little bit to follow his lead. They put up Lions Park in Stockton and the Park House there and I’m proud of the work they all did over there and how those efforts have benefitted that village.” Over the years Lena Lions and Lions International have recognized Kaufman numerous times for his service. He served as Second and First Vice-President before he became President of the Lena organization. He was also recognized with an award from the Lions International President in addition to the Melvin Jones and Foundation Fellow awards Kaufman served as a Zone Chairman, Fall Festival Treasurer and

Chair of the Scholarship Committee overseeing the disbursement of annual Lions scholarships to area high school students. He remains among the strongest promoters of the organization. “I tell folks the same thing every time I’m asked about joining the Lions,” Kaufman said. “We try to help local people as much as we can, but we still have glasses and hearing aids for people and all the while we stand ready to help folks like the hurricane victims down in Texas right now. We like to help people in our immediate area the most, but there are others that need help too, so we try to be available and help in any way we can. We say if the work we do helps our neighbors, then it helps the town.” Gary Meyers I was asked to join Lions by my wife’s uncle 18 years ago, Meyers said. “I became very interested in it when I found out what they are all about.” At the top of his list is the Lions involvement with the Special Olympics program. “I had done several projects in support of Special Olympics and their work with special needs people and that really got my interest,” said Meyers. “I liked seeing what both organizations were accomplishing through Special Olympics. It remains very important work.” He especially recalls a Freeport bowling event. “The Lions District is kind of the same as the Special Olympics District,” said Meyers. “It was amazing to see the number of special needs people that came in support of the event and to participate.” The Lions are also instrumental to the success of the Winter Special Olympics event held annually at Chestnut Mountain Resort near Galena, IL. “That really caught my eye, but I wasn’t that much into going out in the cold until I learned what the
