4-H grads shine in tough times Stephenson County 4-H seniors were recognized recently with a 4-H memorabilia tassel. The local grads included Adam Engelkens, Brooke Colberg, Cailey Cahoon, Colton Theis, Grace Suttman, Isabella Kostallari, Krista Keene, Kyla Glendenning, Paige Weber, Rebecca Kempel and Sierra Everson. “We are honored these seniors chose to make 4-H a part of their high school careers,” Becky Gocken, Stephenson County 4-H program coordinator, said in a news release. “They are great leaders for our younger members.” During 2020, Illinois 4-H
youth faced challenges during the COIVD-19 pandemic with school closures, 4-H cancellations, and 4-H exhibitions being moved to a virtual format. “We recognize the challenges our 4-H youth faced, especially our 4-H members that were in their senior year of high school and missing many milestones in their school and 4-H careers,” said Tina Veal, 4-H alumni and constituent engagement manager with Illinois 4-H. “We wanted the opportunity to recognize those youth by creating a new 4-H memorabilia tassel to let 4-H youth

4-H Foundation recognizes local volunteer Stephanie Mitchell of the Country Cuzins 4-H Club recently received the Illinois 4-H Foundation Hall of Fame Award. The award was established to “honor and celebrate extraordinary 4-H alumni, volunteers and former 4-H staff,” according to a foundation news release. Mitchell is an organizational leader for the Country Cuzins club in Stephenson County and an 11-year alumna of the Friends in 4-H Club from the Florence area. According to the release, Mitchell encourages members to try new projects. “During General Projects Day, Stephanie can be found running around and encouraging her club members that might be nervous and giving high-fives to those that completed their judging,” the release said. “Stephanie’s positive attitude is a great asset to our county,” Becky Gocken, Stephenson County 4-H program coordinator, said in the release. “She continues to support her 4-H members and families with grace and dignity. Health experts offer tips for safe start to school
Officials at FHN health care system recently discussed keeping children safe as they go back to school. FHN President and CEO Mark Gridley and infection preventionist Margie Kochsmier are featured in the COVID-19 update video, which is available online at fhn.org/coronavirus. Some highlights of their message included these tips:
Set a good example “Anyone, of any age, can get COVID-19, and can spread the virus, even if they don’t have any symptoms,” Kochsmier said. “So it’s important that parents serve as good role models for their children and practice safe social distancing, masking and hand washing at home.”
