The Lena Historical Society museum will be open from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 18, for visitors to enjoy a new exhibit, “Impacting History: Lena Women Who Made Their Mark.” The 10 women featured, all born in the 19th century, probably aren’t known by most Lena citizens, said Sharon Welton, executive director of the Stephenson County Historical Museum. “The women were chosen because they did things that, for the time, took courage; they helped pave the way toward women’s equality,” Welton said. “They did work that was mostly thought to be ‘men’s work.’ Many went on to do these things outside of Lena, but they all considered Lena their home and all are buried here.” The women are Mary Ann Curtis, Martha Burbridge, Mary Buss, Rachel Schermerhorn, Elvira Montague, Lucinda McEathron, Nellie Snider, Beulah Shoesmith, Rosalie Taylor and Helen Cooper. The exhibit will be on display until the summer of 2023. In addition to Sept. 18, the museum, located at 470

Dedicated Lena 4-H leader notches state honor Kristi Krahmer, co-club leader of the Lena Lucky Clovers 4-H club, recently was named to the Illinois 4-H Hall of Fame for her leadership and mentoring role as a volunteer. The hall of fame honors volunteers and former staff members for their dedication to the University of Illinois Extension 4-H youth development program. Krahmer was nominated by Stephenson County Extension staff and was one of 71 people recognized during a virtual ceremony last month. Krahmer has been a volunteer with the Stephenson County 4-H program for more than 10 years, spending the last six as a leader with the Lena Lucky Clovers.
In her role as a club leader, she serves as the liaison between club members and the 4-H program/Extension staff. Some of her duties include hosting club meetings and activities and recruiting new youth as well as helping current 4-H members select their projects for the 4-H show. “Kristi’s great communication skills — especially through the pandemic when we were only able to meet virtually — kept 4-H members, project leaders and Extension staff connected,” Brenda Heimann, University of Illinois Extension 4-H youth and development program coordinator, said in a news release. “She focuses on 4-H youth and
their project areas — making sure the youth have everything they need to get their projects ready for the 4-H show. “Kristi’s love for 4-H and the youth of Stephenson County shows through her dedication to the club and its members.” A Winslow resident, Krahmer lives with her husband, Roger, and son, Zakary. Besides volunteering with 4-H, she’s also the treasurer of the Winslow Park District and is employed at the FS Fast Stop in Lena as the assistant kitchen manager. For more information about 4-H in Stephenson County or volunteering, contact Heimann at 815-235-4125 or bheimann@illinois.edu.
