Broncos brought down by Polo By Chris Johnson REPORTER

There will be eight more Friday nights to shoot for the win for the Orangeville Broncos, following the 2017 season opening 20-12 loss to the Polo Marcos. They could get that little stat covered this Friday night when they head home to face River Ridge. Kick-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. Polo was 5-4 last year and that meant they won that one extra game that got them the qualifying number for postseason play. The win over Orangeville last Friday night might have that same meaning, when October play begins. Polo struck first and managed that thanks to great blocking at impact and on the downfield journey. A 57yard touchdown run gave the Marcos the edge they 7-0 edge they needed. They had to make it stand until after the break. Orangeville came out of the metaphoric tunnel and onto the field with a single purpose in place it appeared.

The ball would be run and it would come down to getting great pushes up front. Austin Guy got the Broncos on the board in the third quarter after he broke away from tacklers and stepped into the zone for the sixpoint score. The extra point attempt failed. The pass fell away. Polo responded with a drive of its own as the third quarter unfolded. The Marcos pushed through the pile and secured the first downs as needed. A pass off the snap found its mark and Polo picked up six. The extra point kick was solid as the Marcos built a 13-6 advantage. Orangeville took its shot immediately after score. Austin Guy followed his block and cut away from trailers. He slipped 70 and scored to make help cut it to one, 13-12 after three. Polo didn’t change its plan of attack. It kept grinding up front and

Panthers run down Thunder in season opener By Chris Johnson

The Lena-Winslow Panthers ran the offense with a single purpose on Friday night as the season opened with a 34-20 win over nearby West Carroll. They ran the ball hard and maintained a consistent focus. The win was needed. It is known that to win in the NUIC, a team has to control the line of scrimmage. They have to be able to conduct an offensive strategy that consists of direct and indirect means and that usually means on the ground. Run first, pass next works, if passing becomes a focus at all in a team’s plan of attack. Great teams use the pass more effectively, when they control the game by grinding out first downs. They collected over 300 yards and pounded Savanna with senior Rahveon Valentine, who carried the ball 39 times for 147 yards. Sophomore Sean Ormiston took advantage of his opportunities and scurried for 158 yards and a score on his 16 attempts. Senior Gaige Schwartz helped carry the load. He averaged five yards per attempt in the win over West Carroll. Schwartz opened the night with a touchdown strike after the Panthers put themselves in a great position to succeed.
