The Jo Daviess Conservation Foundation upcoming events Meteors on the Mound The Jo Daviess Conservation Foundation (JDCF) invites everyone to Meteors on the Mound for a glimpse of the Perseid meteor shower from atop Horseshoe Mound Preserve on Saturday, Aug. 13 from 7 p.m. – 10 p.m. Horseshoe Mound is one of the highest points in Jo Daviess County and offers spectacular views of the tristate area from several different outlooks. This is the only time of the year that the preserve is open to the public after dark, so it is a special occasion. The cost is $10 per person. RSVP’s are not required. There will be family-friendly activities for people of all ages as well a presentation by expert astronomer, Walter Trentadue. Amateur astronomers will have telescopes onsite so that participants can view various heavenly bodies. If you have a telescope, please bring it along. Horseshoe Mound Preserve is located at 1679 N Blackjack Road, Galena. This program is weather dependent so if it is raining, please visit the JDCF website or Facebook page for updates. Guided Tours of Casper Bluff Back by popular demand after a very successful first season, tours of Casper Bluff by trained volunteers are up and running. Next, the group will be shown part of the Aiken Mound group, a series of Native America mounds that were built approximately 700-900 A.D. as part of the Effigy Mound culture. The tour also winds through acres of restored native prairie that is starting to bloom right now and is a sight not to be missed. On Tuesday, July 12 the Lena Sons of The American Legion (SAL) Squadron 577 thanked nine area veterans for their service to the country by taking them to Wrigley Field to watch the Baltimore Orioles take on the Chicago Cubs. After leaving Freeport at 1 p.m. for the journey to Chicago, the group stopped at Yak-Zies in Wrigleyville for a pregame meal before entering the friendly confines to see the Orioles top the Cubs 4-2. Not only did the vets have a great meal and great game, they had

many pictures taken with the Cubs Icons Statues in the Gallagher Way Plaza. The Lena SAL would like to thank the following groups and individuals for their financial support; Lena American Legion Post #577, Legion Auxiliary, and members of the Lena Sons of the American Legion chapter. Many individuals as well as these groups made personal and group donations to make this event happen. Throughout the year the Lena SAL raises funds to sup-

port local and area Veterans causes with an annual calendar raffle, working at various local food stands and a weekly Queen of Hearts drawing at the Iron Horse Tap in Lena, Saturdays at 5:30 p.m. As part of the American Legion family, the Sons of the American Legion members are direct male descendants of men or women who served in the United States Armed Forces.
