Orangeville Football 2019 season preview

Head Coach Jay Doyle and the Orangeville Broncos are back and ready to begin their 2019 run. The varsity Bronco’s football squad will open up their season on their home turf when they host Aquin Catholic High School in week one.

Doyle, entering his seventh season as head coach, is looking to take what he did last season and build on it. Coming off a 5-4 season, the Wildcats were able to finish the regular season above five hundred, but eventually fell to 5-5 after their loss in the playoffs. Doyle should look to further develop what his team learned last season and hope to make a deeper run in the 2019 playoffs.

Doyle believes he has a group of talented guys that will be able to contribute in many different ways during the upcoming season. “Versatility and athleticism” are factors in what Doyle mentioned when discussing the Broncos strengths this year.

Doyle believes their team’s biggest challenge could be similar to what most high school teams face every season. “I think team weaknesses at any 1A or 2A school would be depth.

Whether that’s depth at the right position or injuries” Doyle said.

When asked what his team’s goals are for the upcoming season Doyle said “Well just like the last couple of years, I think you want to get off to a good start and have something to play for in weeks seven, eight, and nine and we have been able to

do that. We expect to do that again, hopefully.”

Doyle was quick to mention senior Garret Rodebaugh when asked who he thought would have a big impact this season. “He is an All-Area Fullback, he rushed for over fifteen hundred yards last season.” Doyle said when discussing Rodebaugh’s talents. Doyle expects the backfield to be loaded with talent this year.

Chase Jordan, a junior, returns to the team after rushing for over 750 yards last year. “He really came on late, worked his tail off all summer, and we expect big things from him.”

Doyle said of what Jordan brings to the team.

Finally, Doyle had some compliments for one of his most versatile athletes. “Carter Kleckler, he is going to be a four-year starter on offense and defense. Along with Rodebaugh, they will both be starting both ways for four years.” He said. On Kleckler, Doyle shared “You know, he will play wherever. Matchup wise, he played quarterback, running back, wide receiver- and this year, he is going to do a lot of the same.

He has just been one of the best athletes in the area, he is just that type of athlete. He will help where we need help.”

Doyle’s backfield certainly has plenty of talent and experience and they will look to lead the way offensively for the Broncos. It could be easy to imagine multiple thousand-yard rushers on this 2019 Broncos team.

LeWin Volleyball season preview CORRESPONDENT

The LeWin Panthers volleyball squad are back and ready to pick up where they left off last season.

Coming off a dominant 33-6 season which ended with a loss to Galena in the sectional finals, the Panthers return a number of experienced athletes from last year’s team.

The Panthers roster features seven seniors, most of which had an impact in one way or another on last year’s success. They will be lead by captains Jenna Bidlingmaier, Madily Shultz, and Jenna Zeal. Their leadership and play will play a key role in determining how successful their

FS Fast Stop has donated a new grill to the Le-Win Athletic Boosters: The Le-Win Athletic boosters received a new grill this week which was donated by FS Fast stop to assist in their fundraising efforts for the Athletic programs at Lena Winslow JR & HS. The Le-Win Athletic Boosters president, Michelle Weegens said, “Having a grill is a critical part of our fundraising efforts because a huge portion of our funds come from our Fall Festival Stand and the concessions at football games. Those who helped us grill last year know that our old grill was in rough shape.

When we started the search for a new grill, we found that it would be quite an expense for us to replace so we were very thankful when we found out that FS was going to donate the grill.” The Le-Win Athletic boosters provide many items to the Le-Win athletic programs each year including uniforms, equipment, travel expense reimbursement and many other items! Over the past two years the boosters have donated just under $50,000 to the athletic programs. The Le-Win Athletic Boosters consists of a board of 8 local individuals who donate their time to raise these funds for our schools. Monroe Clinic celebrates elite 5-star rating Monroe Clinic is one of only 293 hospitals nationwide to achieve a five-star ranking from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) in a review process that included over 4,500 hospitals.

“Our position among the top 6% of hospitals across the nation is not just a matter of having very talented people,” shared Monroe Clinic President Mike Sanders. “It is a matter of those talented people being dedicated to pursuing excellence and improvement in all areas of their work.

It’s their diligence in the daily tasks, as well as the strategic initiatives.”

Sanders explained the updated data is available on the Hospital Compare database at Medicare.gov, which allows individuals to enter

their zip code to search and compare ratings from area hospitals.

The database breaks down the ratings of each hospital by quality factors, including patient experience, safety, effectiveness of care, patient readmissions, efficient use of medical imaging, timeliness of care, and mortality.

Medicare’s system is modeled after the star rating system used by hotels, restaurants and other service industries where consumers choose higher star rating facilities to help ensure the best experience possible.

Even as consumers are sometimes overwhelmed by the rankings and awards, these achievement recognitions serve an important purpose in our healthcare industry. Chelsea

DERICK SCOTT PARKER Derick Scott Parker, poet, provocateur and pool player; narrator of his own life, aged 49, left this world on Aug. 20, 2019. He’s now at rest with his intellectual equals; dad, Hugh Parker, Ernest Hemingway, Henry David Thoreau and Jim Morrison.

He was born to Hugh and Judith (Below) Parker on March 7, 1970 and would proclaim forever more he was older and wiser than anyone else born that day.

He graduated from Stockton High School, attended Highland Community College, where he served on the editorial board of the Prairie Wind literary journal, and Southern Illinois University where he obtained his bachelor’s degree in English. He completed graduate studies at Eastern Illinois University, working towards a MFA in Creative Writing.

Those left to celebrate his life are his favorite sister Leeann Fischer, her husband Brian, and their children Dylan and Shawn. His aunt Melody Heidenreich, uncle’s Dennis Parker, Tom Heidenreich, Tom Below, and Jerry Below, and his children, Brian and Brett. Mischief making cohorts and cousins, Angela and Todd Heidenreich. His children, Tristan and Tessa Tucker and Alexander Parker,

and his mother.

In addition to his father, he’s gone home to be with his grandparents Rex and Marion Parker, and Harold and Clara Below. And his dog Oreo.

We will remember him at a service on Saturday August 31, at the Unitarian Universalist church in Stockton, IL. Visitation from 1-3 p.m., with service beginning at 3 p.m.

We will say good bye to him at Morseville Cemetery, Morseville Rd., Stockton, IL directly following the ceremony.

We will celebrate his life and shoot one more round of pool at Aunt Mel’s, 13487 E. Blair Hill Rd., Stockton, IL, starting at 5 p.m.

A memorial fund has been established. Condolences may be shared at www.hermannfuneralhome.com.

While there are many ways to describe what we loved about Derick, many cannot be put in print. Suffice it to say he touched the souls of many and agitated many more. He had a love for fishing and frisbee, fast driving and loud music, deep questions and a good book. He was courageous and never gave up. He was proud of his children and couldn’t wait to see what the world had in store for them.

He was a friend to many and will be missed by all whose lives he touched.

He graduated from Warren High School in 1960 and attended Carroll College majoring in Psychology, Sociology and Education. HE attended the University of Wisconsin-Platteville and achieved his master degree in Guidance and Counseling in 1973.

In1974, he completed administrative course work at the University of Wisconsin in Madison.

He began his career in education as a reading specialist and fourth grade teacher at Nora Elementary School.

Following this, he was the principal at Apple River Jr. High School for seven years. He spent the remaining 24 years of his educational career as principal of Warren Elementary School.

He married Diane Roberts on July 24, 1974. They raised two daughters, Heidi and Jennifer.

Roger enjoyed cooking, garden-

ing, and entertaining his friends and family. He liked listening to classical music and show tunes. In his years at Warren School, Roger touched the lives of many students, parents, and staff. He was very dedicated to the Warren Community by serving on several boards for the Village of Warren, Warren Development Board, the Community Building, and the Warren Library. After retiring, he enjoyed spending time in Florida and North Carolina.

Roger is survived by his children-Heidi Sigafus (Scott) of Apple

River, IL and Jennifer Teuscher (Lincoln Smith) of Cape Coral, FL; his sister Susan Leroux of Manosque, France; grandchildren- Eron Sigafus, Lauren Sigafus, Alizea Teuscher; nephew Justin Leroux; and his cat Macie.

He was preceded in death by his parents Fay and Merle Teuscher.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 7, at the Warren United Methodist Church.

All are invited on Sept. 1, to Good Shepherd, 118 E. Mason St. Lena, IL for worship service with Holy Communion. Guest preacher Rev. Kenn Stork will deliver a message. The not so skinny cook Some cooler weather set in last weekend. Can you believe that we will celebrate Labor Day this next week? That is the official ending of summer. School starts for all schools after this holiday, and I guess the cooler weather ushers in fall. Fall is my favorite time of the year, and I am hoping we will have a nice one this year with colored leaves and crisp and sunny days. Since we missed out on spring and the early part of summer, I am not getting my hopes up. This week we do have some recipes you could serve for the holiday weekend.

The first recipe is for an interesting dip that uses avocados, peaches and peppers. Enjoy this different combination using the season’s fruit and vegetable. Remember that Haas avocados are generally considered the best. They have been on sale at the grocery stores in the last few weeks.

Peachy Jalapeno Guacamole

2 medium ripe avocados, peeled and cubed 2 T. lime juice ½ t. salt ½ t. cumin ¼ t. pepper 1 medium peach, peeled and finely chopped 1 jalapeno pepper, seeded and minced 3 T. finely chopped red onions Mash avocados and lime juice in a bowl; add salt, cumin and pepper and mix well. Gently stir in peach, jalapeno and red onion. Serve with tortilla chips.

Sweet corn has arrived on the scene, and this recipe is a bit different than just eating corn on the cob.

It makes a great dish to pass for a picnic.

Stir in corn and reduce heat Beans to medium; cover skillet and cook 1 lb. ground beef until tender, 5 minutes. Season with 2 cans (28 oz. each) pork and beans sugar and salt.

1 jar (16 oz.) salsa This pasta is a pretty salad because 1 onion, chopped it uses shells. I always think that 5 T. yellow mustard shell pasta makes a nice dish. Again 3 T. bourbon it is a great share-a-dish for a picnic 3 T. Coke or a great side for dinner. If you like 1 T. ketchup things spicy, use more hot sauce.

1 T. brown sugar The buttermilk in the dressing makes Dash of Tabasco sauce this salad really creamy.

Preheat oven to 350. In a skillet

Garden Pasta Salad

1 lb. pound medium pasta shells 2 peppers, chipped 1 C. chopped celery 8 radishes, diced 1 C. mayonnaise 1 C. sour cream ½ C. buttermilk 2 T. white wine, vinegar ½ t. garlic powder Dash of hot sauce ½ chopped fresh chives ½ C. chopped fresh dill Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the pasta and cook according to package directions. Drain and rinse under cold water until completely cool. Pat very dry. Combine the pasta in a large bowl with peppers, celery, and radishes. In a small bowl, whisk the mayo, sour cream, buttermilk, vinegar, garlic powder and hot sauce until smooth. Stir in the chives and dill and season with salt. Pour the dressing over the pasta and vegetables and toss to coat.

¼ t. pepper 3 medium zucchini, cubed 2 large tomatoes, chopped ¼ C. water 1 C. uncooked instant rice 1 C. shredded cheddar cheese In a large skillet, cook and crumble the beef with onions and pepper over medium-high heat until no longer pink, 5 to 7 minutes; drain. Stir in seasonings, vegetables, water and rice; bring to a boil. Reduce heat; simmer,, covered, until rice is tender, 10 to 15 minutes. Sprinkle with cheese. Remove from heat; let stand until cheese is melted.

I know that peaches are getting to the end of the season, but this recipe is a good one if you have one of those peaches you have to use up. Enjoy this interesting recipe for end of the season peaches.

3 lb. beef chuck roast 1 C. Sweet Baby Ray’s Honey Barbeque sauce ½ C apricot preserves

Mexican Corn Salad

6 ears corn Salt ½ C. mayonnaise or sour cream ¼ C. feta or Parmesan cheese Juice of 2 limes 2 T. fresh cilantro or basil, chopped 1 T. chili powder Carefully cut corn kernels off cob.

Add ½ inch of water to a medium saucepan and salt well. Bring to a simmer. Add corn, cover and cook until corn is tender, 4 to 5 minutes.

Drain and pat dry. In a serving bowl, toss corn with mayo, cheese, lime juice, cilantro and chili powder. Season with salt and garnish with chili powder.

This recipe is a great side for a picnic or just a regular dinner; the addition of the mustard seeds adds a

This slow cooker beef barbeque is just the thing for a Labor Day picnic. You can use any kind of barbeque sauce, but I really like the Sweet Baby Ray’s Honey one. The apricot preserves gives it just a little sweetness. If you want a little color, use yellow or red peppers instead of green ones. I also use the Pepperidge Farm Slider Buns or don’t have a bun at all.

1/3 C. chopped green pepper 1 small onion, chopped 1 T. Dijon mustard 2 T. brown sugar 12 sandwich rolls, split Cut the roast into quarters; place in a greased 5 quart slow cooker. In a bowl, combine the barbecue sauce preserves, green pepper, onion, mustard and brown sugar. Pour over the roast. Cover and cook on low for 6 to 8 hours or until it is tender. When meat is cool enough to handle, shred with two forks; return to slow cooker and stir gently. Cook, covered, 20 to 30 minutes longer. Skim fat from sauce. Serve beef on rolls.

Once again I have a zucchini recipe. This one is a great meal for a weeknight. It makes up fast and is filling. It is good the next day warmed in the microwave. If you have people who eat at different times, this is also a good recipe for these kind of families.

Gov. J.B. Pritzker celebrated a pair of new laws expanding Illinois’ medical marijuana program

Gov. J.B. Pritzker celebrated a pair of new laws Monday that expand the state’s medical marijuana program, including one that gives students more options for taking the drug at school.

“As we continue to reform state government so that it better serves its families, we must do so in a way that advances dignity, empathy, opportunity and grace. In each of these things, this legislation moves us forward,” Pritzker said at a bill-signing ceremony in Springfield One of the bills expands a 2018 law known as “Ashley’s Law,” which authorizes schools to allow parents, guardians or other caregivers to administer cannabis-infused products to a student who is authorized to use medical marijuana The law is named after Ashley Surin, a Schaumburg student who uses marijuana-based products to manage a seizure disorder she developed at age 3 while undergoing chemotherapy to treat cancer she had had since age 2. She won the right to use marijuana-infused products at school in a federal court battle that was decided in January 2018 “We’re so proud of her, and we’re

so happy this program is continuing and expanding because it’s like a miracle that our daughter is doing so well, and I can’t wait to see what she does next,” Ashley’s mother, Maureen Surin, said during the ceremony.

Since enactment of the first medical marijuana law in Illinois in 2013, Pritzker noted, more than 80,000 patients across the state have received authority to use marijuana to treat certain medical conditions.

Under Senate Bill 455, which takes effect Jan. 1, 2020, schools will be required to allow a school nurse or administrator to administer cannabis-infused products to a student who is a registered qualifying patient. It also allows students to self-administer the medication, under the direct supervision of a nurse or school administrator, and it expands a student’s access to the drug to include before- and after-school activities.

Pritzker also noted the signing of Senate Bill 2023, which he actually signed Friday, expanding and making permanent the medical cannabis pilot program, which was scheduled to sunset next year.

It also allows qualifying veterans access to medical marijuana as part of an Opioid Alternative Pilot Program.

It also expands the list of medical professionals who can certify patients to use medical marijuana beyond medical doctors to include advance practice registered nurses and physician assistants.

The bill further requires state regulators to award any remaining medical marijuana dispensary licenses under the same competitive application review rules that apply under the new adult recreational marijuana

law, meaning additional points are awarded to “social equity” applicants who come from high-crime or high-poverty neighborhoods, or applicants who have previously been arrested or convicted of minor marijuana offenses that are now eligible for expungement.

“This is yet another piece of legis-

lation that expands equity across our state,” Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton said.

“By making the medical cannabis program permanent, expanding access to veterans and expanding the list of medical conditions, we are ensuring that families all across our state have access to the health care that they deserve.”

Highland hopeful after no women’s basketball this season

Highland Community College will not have a women’s basketball team for the upcoming 2019-2020 season.

“Obviously we are very disappointed to make this announcement especially with the success of our women’s basketball program over the years,” said Pete Norman, Highland Community College Athletic Director. “However, we need to allow time for those colleges on our schedule time to plan accordingly.”

The Highland Women’s basketball program thrived with back to back Region IV Championships in 2018 and 2019, as well as a championship in 2016. Plus, back to back Arrowhead Conference Championships in 2018 and 2019.

Missing a season due to no head coach and shortage of players is becoming a trend at many colleges according to Norman. “Unfortunately, this has happened too frequently at our level across the country,” he said.

The search for a new head coach started immediately after Lonnie Boga gave his notice in May and will continue until someone is in place for the 2020-2021 season. The timing also limited Highland’s opportunity to recruit new players for the current season.

“It is not a good thing, but we will move forward and hope to name a coach as soon as possible, so we can start recruiting for the next school year,” said Norman. “We are going to come back just as strong for not only our loyal fans but for the student-athletes who depend on the program for access to quality education at Highland and to continue their careers at the intercollegiate level.”

Since that time, we have grown to be the largest patriotic organization in the world. 2019 Sigafus reunion

On July 28th, 56 members and friends attended the annual Sigafus Family Reunion held at the clubhouse at Apple Canyon Lake. Attendees came from California, Florida, Indiana, Kentucky, Minnesota, North Carolina, Ohio and Wisconsin as well as a number of different towns in Illinois.

At the 11 a.m. worship service, Janis Sigafus led the service and Laurrel Vanderheyden gave a wonderful sermon. Special music was provided by Janis and Kim Whitehurst and also by Sigafus singers Katy, Chris, Kassi and Becca who joined Janis in singing “How Great Thou Art.” Lydia Hurst updated us on the offering collected last year for the Sigafus goat herd project in Africa. This year’s offering will go toward the Red Bird Mission project for the teens of the Good News Club in Apple River. We also honored twins Alvin and Allen Sigafus who will be celebrating their 95th birthdays on September 2l. Allen traveled from Mankato, MN to be with his brother for this special event.

A lavish potluck dinner immediately followed the worship service.

We truly enjoy these yearly gatherings of our family and look forward to next year when we will meet again at the Apple Canyon Lake Clubhouse on Sunday July 26th, 2020.

The Daily Drawing is an on-going drawing for specified cash prizes between $50 and $250 awarded to a ticket owner every single day (365 days) from October 1, 2018 – September 30, 2019 to those donating for a ticket. A ticket can win multiple times throughout the year.

Eighteen organizations from JoDaviess, Carroll & Stephenson County sponsor the Northwest Illinois Daily Drawing, a cooperative fundraiser.

Sponsoring organizations include: Caring Community of Elizabeth, East Dubuque Music Boosters, Freeport Dance Team, Galena Music

Boosters, Hanover Alumni Association, Lena-Winslow Education Foundation, Pearl City Athletic Boosters, River Ridge Education Association, Stewards of the Upper Mississippi River Refuge, Stockton Strong, Warren Athletic Boosters and West Carroll Sports Boosters. Sub-contracting organizations include: Elizabeth Food Basket, Elizabeth Historical Society, Galena Elks Scholarship Committee, Hanover Chamber of Commerce, Scales Mound Travelers and Volunteer Visitors of Northwest Illinois.
