Cinderella…After the Ball and Grease to be performed at Timber Lake Playhouse Timber Lake Playhouse, the professional summer theatre of Northwest Illinois, will present the Magic Owl Theatre’s production of Cinderella…After the Ball and the All-Area Teen Production of Grease during the July Fourth week.

After last summer’s blockbuster hit, School Of Rock, Timber Lake Playhouse is proud to present its 2nd annual All-Area Teen Production of America’s original “high school musical,” Grease. With great songs – all with a drivin’ beat that’ll bring you back to the wonderful world of 50’s Rock and Roll – Grease will be a musical that you’ll want to see again and again.

Featuring teen performers from Carroll, Whiteside, Lee, Stephenson, Ogle, and Clinton Counties, TLP has assembled the best youth talent from Northwestern Illinois.

Grease originated in Chicago and made its premiere at The Kingston Mines Theater in 1971. In 1978, Grease became a hugely popular feature film starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John in the lead roles.

Grease features book, music and lyrics by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey.

Performances are Monday July 3, at 7:30 p.m. and Thursday July 6, Friday July 7, and Saturday July 8 at 2 p.m. All tickets are $12.

Featuring Timber Lake Playhouse’s company members, this ensemble sings and dances to bring the fairy tale kingdom to life. Kiersten Frumkin who recently played Mrs. Banks in Timber Lake’s Mary Poppins is Cinderella, playing alongside Sam Columbus as the villainous Pinocchio and Nick Drake as the Dragon, this modern age fairy tale is sure to entertain and inspire.

Madigan and broad coalition threaten to sue if U.S. EPA continues ignoring legal duty Attorney General Lisa Madigan and 14 other attorneys general, the California Air Resources Board, and the City of Chicago alerted the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) today that they plan to sue if the agency continues to ignore its legal duty to control emissions of methane – an extremely potent greenhouse gas – from existing oil and gas operations.

In a letter today to EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt, the coalition provided the required notice of their intention to sue the agency for failing to fulfill its obligation under the Clean Air Act to control methane emissions from existing oil and natural gas sources and for “unreasonably delaying” the issuance of such controls.

“The U.S. EPA has an obligation to

protect people and the environment from toxic methane pollution, and we will go into court if the agency continues to ignore this vital function,” Madigan said.

Methane is an extremely potent greenhouse gas, warming the climate about 80 times more than carbon dioxide over a 20-year timeframe.

Oil and gas operations – production, processing, transmission, and distribution – are the largest industrial source of methane emissions in the U.S. and the second largest industrial source of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions behind only electric power plants. Based on EPA data, the Environmental Defense Fund estimates that roughly $1.5 billion worth of natural gas – enough to heat over 5 million homes – leaks or is intentionally released from the oil and gas

supply chain each year. The logic of continuing to allow leaks and intentional discharges of methane is especially dubious, as methane itself is a valuable product, being the primary component of natural gas.

In June 2016, EPA finalized standards to control methane emissions from oil and gas operations that were constructed or substantially modified after September 2015. Under the federal Clean Air Act, the regulation of these “new” sources triggered a legal requirement for the EPA also to regulate methane emissions from “existing” sources – emission sources in oil and gas operations in existence before September 2015.

In today’s letter to Pruitt, the coalition argues that EPA’s failure to act since September 2015 to issue controls on methane emissions from

existing sources in the oil and gas industry violates the EPA’s non-discretionary duty under the Clean Air Act and is an unreasonable delay in setting such controls.

Madigan and the coalition of attorneys general have taken several other steps to force the federal government to control methane pollution from the oil and gas industry. Last week, a coalition of 14 states filed a motion to intervene in a lawsuit against EPA’s actions halting regulation of methane emissions from new sources in the oil and gas industry. In February, a coalition of seven attorneys general and two environmental agencies urged U.S. Senate leadership to oppose a Congressional Review Act resolution to repeal a rule regulating methane emissions from oil and gas operations on public lands.

Madigan also has condemned federal executive action to attempt to eliminate the Clean Power Plan and opposed the drastic budget cuts proposed for the EPA. Madigan has long supported the Clean Power Plan and the legal actions that led to it. The Attorney General also recently joined a broad coalition of states and localities in support of the Paris climate change agreement called the “We are Still In” coalition.

Joining Madigan in issuing today’s letter are attorneys general from: California, Connecticut, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Washington, and the District of Columbia, as well as the California Air Resources Board and the City of Chicago.

School Management Alliance applauds vote to keep schools open After 732 days without a state budget, the Illinois House of Representatives took a significant step toward ending the longest impasse of any state in the country by approving a revenue bill Sunday. Amendment 3 to Senate Bill 9, which includes a state income tax hike, passed by a 72-45 vote that included 15 Republican votes. The vote total was one more than the super-majority necessary.

The House then immediately moved to Senate Bill 6, a balanced budget bill, which passed by an 8134 vote. That bill included $350 million additional education funding for the evidence-based school funding model as well as increased funding for regular transportation for schools.

FRANCIS R. DAUL Francis R. Daul, 80, of Lena, IL, passed away on June 26, 2017 at FHN. He was born on February 3, 1937 in Luxemburg, WI, to Anton and Evelyn Daul. He graduated from Luxemburg High School in 1955.

From 1955 to 1961, he served in the Army National Guard. He attended UW-Madison and received a certificate in Dairy Management. In 1962 he attended WSU-Oshkosh, where he didn’t receive a degree, but instead a wife of 48 years. He married Barbara Schneider on October 5, 1968 in Oshkosh, WI. He worked as a cheese maker, cheese plant manager, and dairy consultant. He was a member of Crossroads Community Church, the Knights of Columbus, and a past member of the Lena Lions Club and various dairy organizations. His hobbies included boating, fishing, hunting, reading, technology, eating, watching the Packers, and being a cheese aficionado.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Daul; 4 children, Julie Amendt, Doug Daul (fiancée Stefanie Corbett), Diana Jansen (Jeff), Colleen Williamson (Glen); 7 grandchildren, Christopher and Erin Amendt, Aiden and Graham Jansen, Alex, Isaac, and Elliana Williamson, 4 sisters, 1 brother, 1 brother-in-law, cousins, and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers, a nephew, and 2 brother-in-laws.

A service was held on Friday June 30, at the Crossroads Community Church, 1668 N. Crossroads Lane, Freeport, IL, with Pastor Glen Williamson officiating. A visitation was held at the Crossroads Community Church on Thursday June 29. Interment will be at Lena Burial Park. A memorial has been established in his memory. Gone Fishin’ is a blue grass gospel group that consists of Brian & Sharon Lieb (Loran IL), Mary Jean Hammer (Apple

River), Terry O’Malley (Stockton) and Mary Berryhill (Stockton). Gone Fishin’ began with Brian, Sharon & Mary Berryhill in June 2014 and in the fall of 2015 Terry & Mary Jean joined the group. Each member of Gone Fishin’ has different backgrounds in music; Brian and Terry grew up playing in Blue Grass bands.

Both Brian and Terry play multiple instruments, including the banjo and guitar. The tight harmonies of the girls complete the sound.

Gone Fishin’ enjoys singing about Jesus Christ and spreading the good news through their music. The group name was chosen from Mathew 4:19 “Come, follow Me,” Jesus said, “and I will make you fishers of men.” The band feels their mission is to “Go Fishin” for men by singing for Jesus, hoping that through their music and testimony people will see the love of Jesus in them and be encouraged.

St. John’s Lena schedules Vacation Bible School “A Mighty Fortress—In Jesus, the Victory is Won!” is the theme for the 2017 Vacation Bible School (VBS) at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Lena.

VBS will begin on Monday, July 24, through Friday, July 28, from 2:30 to 5 p.m. All children beginning at age three (potty trained) are invited and encouraged to attend. On Thursday July 13, The Friendship Club will meet at 12 p.m. at Good Shepherd for Potluck and entertainment with “Nicky J at the Keyboard.”

This plant is pretty, but it can ruin your summer.

When you venture outside this summer, be on the lookout for Wild Parsnip, the poisonous weed which grows predominately in Illinois and Iowa and causes burning and itching sensations.

Parsnip looks like a dill plant or Queen Anne’s lace. It is yellow and it flowers between May and July and can grow from six inches to six feet tall. It is found predominantly in Illinois and Iowa.

Large patches of wild parsnip, also called poison parsnip, can be found in road ditches, fields, along bike trails and in prairie areas. In a short amount of time, it can take over an area and crowd out the native plants.

At first you may look at it and think it looks very pretty. But, when your skin touches it, it will cause painful blisters and a rash similar to severe burns. The plant’s oily sap can cause a severe reaction when it touches skin and then is exposed to sunlight.

If you happen to find this plant on

your property, make sure to remove it with gloves.

Yeah, nothing about that sounds pleasant!

If you are exposed to a poisonous plant, the Centers for Disease Control recommends: Immediately rinse skin with rubbing alcohol, poison plant wash, or degreasing soap (such as dishwashing soap) or detergent, and lots of water.

Rinse frequently so that wash solutions do not dry on the skin and further spread the urushiol.

Scrub under nails with a brush.

Apply wet compresses, calamine lotion, or hydrocortisone cream to the skin to reduce itching and blistering.

Oatmeal baths may relieve itching.

An antihistamine may help relieve itching. (NOTE: Drowsiness may occur.)

In severe cases or if the rash is on the face or genitals, seek professional medical attention. Call 911 or go to a hospital emergency room if you have a severe allergic reaction, such as swelling or difficulty breathing, or have had a severe reaction in the past.

Lincoln and Douglas are back! Freeport’s nationally known portrayers of Abraham Lincoln and Stephen A. Douglas will perform at Freeport’s Debate Square on Saturday, July 8 at 1 p.m. Tim Connors, who portrays Douglas, and George Buss, who portrays Lincoln. will perform the program “Judge Douglas and President Lincoln: The Conversation Continues.”

The program will recap the events surrounding the 1858 meeting of Lincoln and Douglas as they sought a seat in the United States Senate representing the state of Illinois. Douglas was seeking re-election while the

relatively unknown Lincoln was out to unseat Douglas.

While Douglas eventually won re-election, the national newspaper coverage of the debates gave Lincoln the prominence he needed to capture his party’s nomination for President of the United States in 1860.

Debate Square is located in the 100 block of East Douglas Street in downtown Freeport. Attendees are urged to bring lawn chairs or blankets for seating. The program is open to be public free of charge. In the event of inclement weather, the event will be held inside Freeport Public Library.

The Family YMCA of Northwest Illinois will host the 36th Annual YMCA Triathlon/Duathlon on Saturday, July 8, at the Y on the Highland College campus. Beginning at 8 a.m., the race will start with a 400 meter indoor swim, 17 mile bike ride and end with a 3.1 mile

run; Duathlon – run 1 mile, bike 17 miles, run 3.1 miles This year’s theme is Battle of the Generations. The individual divisions for the event include: The Greatest Generation (1900-1945), Baby Boomers (1946-1964), Generation X (1965-1984), and Mil-

lennials (1985-2004). In addition, there is a male, female and co-ed team option.

There is something for everyone at the Family YMCA of NW IL Triathlon/Duathlon. Athletes can complete the entire course on their own or divide the bike, swim and run with friends!

Trophies will be awarded to the best overall male and female. Medals will be given to the first, second, and third places in individual

HCC to bring back the Highland Orchestra this fall Highland Community College will be bringing back the Highland Orchestra beginning this fall. The ensemble is designed for HCC students and community members who are intermediate or advanced players, who have moderate to considerable technical ability and enjoy creating music with others.

High school students, Highland students, and members of the community are welcome to audition for the Highland Orchestra from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, August 17, at the Ferguson Fine Arts Center, Room, FA-06. The alternative audition date for those unable to attend the main auditions is Thursday, August 24, from 7 to 9 p.m.

The Highland Orchestra provides an opportunity for serious instrumentalists to rehearse and perform a diverse repertoire of classical and contemporary pieces. The goals for the orchestra are to further develop technical ability, encourage discipline, focus, and teamwork, and to reflect beauty, drama, and artistry through music.

Instruments are primarily strings, but the director is open to select woodwinds and brass, depending on instrumentation represented at the

time of audition. Harp, piano, and percussion are also welcome.

The regular rehearsal times will be from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursdays, beginning Aug. 31, with a several-week break in September, resuming weekly in October. A concert date is to be determined.

There is no cost for students and community members. Students will receive one elective credit (tuition waived) per semester for satisfactory participation in MUS 181 Orchestra.

Illinois State Police (ISP) officials continue to grieve the loss of their fallen brother, Trooper Ryan Albin, who was killed in the line of duty on June 28, 2017. Trooper Albin was traveling on I-74 westbound near Farmer City when his vehicle collided with a box truck as both vehicles entered a construction zone. Trooper Albin joined the ISP in 2006 and was currently assigned to District 6 in Pontiac as a canine officer.

As a member of the ISP, Trooper Ablin was an extraordinary Trooper who was tremendously dedicated to his unit and the Department. Trooper Albin was well known for his significant drug, weapon, and illegal cigarette seizures. Trooper Albin served as a juvenile officer and a Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) trustee.

Trooper Albin grew up in Bellflower, IL. He attended Bellflower Grade School, Blue Ridge Junior High, and Blue Ridge High School.

Trooper Albin obtained a bachelor’s degree from Eureka College in Eureka, IL. Trooper Albin was an inspiration to his fellow officers who often consulted with him for guidance. He will be remembered for his work ethic and dedication to selfless service.

Trooper Ryan Albin is survived by his parents, two sisters, six year old daughter and two year old son.

Sixth Annual Spencer Tracy Film Festival The 50th anniversary of the release of Spencer Tracy’s final film will be marked at this year’s Spencer Tracy Film Festival—August 18, 19 and 20. The great American actor Spencer Tracy passed away within weeks of the filming of his final scene in “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner,” in 1967. That film, along with two other classic Spencer Tracy films will be screened at this year’s festival.

The festival will kick off at noon on Friday, August 18 with a screening of “Cass Timberlane,” which was released by MGM in 1947. The film stars Tracy and the noted actress Lana Turner. It was directed by George Sydney. Former Congressman and now Judge Cass Timberlane (Tracy) is a middle-aged, incorruptible, highly respected man who enjoys good books and playing the flute. He falls for Jinny (Turner), a much younger girl from a lower class in his small Minnesota town. At first, the marriage is happy, but Jinny becomes bored with the small town and with the judge’s friends.

The 50th anniversary of its release will be honored with “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner?” at noon on Saturday, August 19. The film was produced and directed by Stanley Kramer. It stars Tracy, Sidney Poitier, and Katharine Hepburn. In a very rare departure from films of the time, “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner” contains a positive representation of the controversial subject of interracial marriage, which at one time was illegal in most states of the United States, and still was illegal in 17 states until June 1967 when such laws were struck down by the United States Supreme Court. The film is notable for being the ninth and final on-screen pairing of Tracy and Hepburn, with filming ending just 17 days before Tracy’s death. Hepburn never wanted to see the completed film, citing her memories of Tracy as too painful.

Another pairing of the popular Tracy and Hepburn will be screen on Sunday, August 20 at noon: “Pat and Mike,” a 1957 MGM release.

Written by the highly successful team of Ruth Gordon and Garson Kanin, “Pat and Mike” was directed by the legendary George Cukor.

The romantic comedy tells the story of a brilliant athlete (Hepburn) who loses her confidence just as national championships in golf and tennis are within her reach. She enlists a not too trustworthy sports promoter (Tracy) to help restore her confidence. Their growing mutual attraction faces the obstacles of their different personalities, a jealous boxer, and some unsavory gangster types.

Freeport’s Spencer Tracy Film Festival recognizes the actor’s roots in Freeport. Both of his parents were born, met, and were married in Freeport. Spencer spent some of his youth in Freeport where he attended Union School. He generally considered the city his hometown.

Top five things you didn’t think could be poisonous to children Half of the calls received by the Illinois Poison Center involve kids under the age of 6. Young children are naturally curious and explore their environments by touching and putting things into their mouths.

They learn by imitation, their taste buds are immature and they do not understand cause and effect. Plus they are just small, so in many cases it doesn’t take much to overwhelm their little systems. The IPC recommends keeping all potentially harmful substances away from children, because just about anything can be a poison in the right amount. The following 5 things are in many households and it may surprise you that they can be so harmful.

Nicotine Everyone knows that

smoking cigarettes is unhealthy, however, ingesting tobacco and nicotine products can be extremely dangerous. Toddlers get into cigarettes, ashtrays and chewing tobacco (which can smell like mint, vanilla or cherry) more often than you may think. And we’ve all seen someone ash their smoke into an empty can or use a spit cup with chewing tobacco.

There is also a whole host of smoking cessation products that contain nicotine: gum, lozenges, patches, and sprays. Effects of nicotine poisoning include vomiting, sweating, lethargy and tremors in mild poisoning and confusion, paralysis, and seizures in severe poisoning. Lamp Oil Lamp oil is an often sweet smelling or colorful liquid found in Tiki torches and decorative oil lamps. Lamp oil is a volatile, low-viscosity hydrocarbon. If it is ingested and goes straight down the hatch into the stomach and stays there, it is not really a problem.

The issue is when it goes down the wrong pipe and gets into the lungs (known as aspiration). The oily slippery substance gets deep down, causing injury to the lungs and interfering with oxygen transfer to the blood. Kids can be drawn to lamp oil because it smells good, looks pretty, or because it is in a bottle resembling a beverage. They take a sip, and as soon as it hits their throat

Illinois Food Service Sanitation Manager Certification classes The University of Illinois Extension will offer an Illinois Food Service Sanitation Manager Course (FSSMC) Sept. 12 and Sept.15. This two-part class will meet the 8-hour coursework and examination required by the state of Illinois for both the initial FSSMC, and the recertification.

The Illinois Department of Public Health’s Food Service Sanitation Code requires food establishments to be under the operational supervision of a certified food service sanitation manager during hours of operation.

This code helps to ensure the safety of consumers when eating away from home. Those receiving this certification have specialized training, by an Illinois approved instructor, regarding the safe handling, preparation and storage of food to help prevent foodborne related illnesses. The certificate is valid for five years from the exam date and then process is repeated once a certificate expires.

During this two-day class, participants will gain knowledge about food safety and contamination, employee health and hygiene, safe food handling practices, cleaning and sanitizing, and HACCP. The class will take place on Sept.

12, from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m., and Sept.

15, from 9 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. at the Stephenson County Farm Bureau,

located at 210 W. Spring St, Freeport, IL. Participants should bring a valid photo ID and arrive 15 minutes early to register, as class will begin promptly at 9:00 AM. Participants must attend the full training to be eligible to take the exam.

they realize it is NOT tasty, so they try to spit it out and in the process it goes down the wrong pipe. Or, they swallow it but will vomit it back up and due to lamp oil’s chemical characteristics, it can very easily slip down into the lungs on the way up.

Symptoms include coughing, gagging and severe trouble breathing.

A study by the IPC showed that 10% of all pediatric lamp oil ingestions result in an admission to the intensive care unit of a hospital because of the damage it causes in the lungs.

Table Salt and Baking Soda Number three takes us into the kitchen. There’s a salt shaker on practically every dining table in the country and baking soda is known to be useful for everything from baking cookies, to deodorizing refrigerators to cleaning. Ingestion of these substances has also been associated with some home remedies; unfortunately a large amount of either one can be dangerous. Table salt is sodium chloride; sodium and chloride are electrolytes that are crucial in the way our bodies function at the cellular level. Too much, and it throws just about everything out of whack. As little as 1 level tablespoon (ingested all at once) can cause seizures in a toddler and 2 tablespoons can be fatal. The chemical name for baking soda is sodium bicarbonate. We know why sodium is bad, and the bicarbonate part is toxic because it is basic (opposite of acidic). In order for the body to function properly, our blood has to be at neutral pH. Too big a change in either direction = bad news. One tablespoon of baking soda ingested by an infant is enough to significantly change blood pH. Muscle Rubs like Bengay® The active ingredient of many muscle

rubs is called methyl salicylate. This chemical is very similar to aspirin.

Aspirin poisoning causes symptoms such as ringing in the ears, vomiting, drowsiness, fluid in the lungs, and seizures. One tablespoon of extra strength cream is the equivalent to 19 aspirin 325mg tablets or 78 of the low dose/baby aspirin tablets!

Fortunately not many children can eat a full tablespoon, but to be safe, make sure to keep this product far out of reach of kids.

Mouthwash Many mouthwashes contain ethanol, which is the same kind of alcohol that is in beer or wine. Alcohol kills bacteria, which is why it is used in mouthwash: to fight bad breath. Scope® contains 15% alcohol (about the strength of wine) and Listerine ® contains 22% alcohol (about half the strength of vodka or whiskey). Mouthwash is a pretty blue or green color and can be sweet, minty and tasty. If a 25 pound toddler drank just 1 ounce of Listerine®, he or she would be legally drunk and drinking 3-4 ounces is enough to cause major toxicity like low blood sugar or coma. Other household substances that contain ethanol include body splash, perfume, aftershave, and hand sanitizer.

To keep kids safe, make sure these and all other potentially harmful substances are out of reach and sight of children. Always call the Illinois Poison Center after ingestion or exposure to any potentially harmful substance, no question too big or small: 1-800-222-1222.

Do you want a fast and easy summer sandwich substitution for a hot summer day. These roll ups are easy to make and tasty. The tangy horseradish sauce gives flavor to otherwise rather bland wraps.

The not so skinny cook June is over, and it went out with a very generous rain. I don’t think those people who had hail or flash flooding were happy. Hopefully none of you sustained any damage. I am always grateful to hear the sump pump running. As one of my teaching colleagues used to say—“That sump pump is music to my ears.” Thank goodness we didn’t lose electricity for any length of time. Hopefully the summer storm season is over, and the rain we get will be a gentle one.

By the time this paper comes out you will be ready to celebrate the Fourth of July or have celebrated. We have several picnic friendly recipes in the column this week.

The first recipe is for a refreshing fruit salad. There are several fruits in this recipe. You can also use fresh pineapple, oranges, and blackberries in substitution. It is a great and cool salad for a hot summer day.

Poppy Seed Fruit Salad

Toss peaches with almond extract in another bowl and mix the cornstarch and remaining sugar; add to the peaches and toss to coat. Spread over the crust; sprinkle with reserved topping.

Bake until lightly browned and filling is bubbly about 40-45 minutes.

Cool completely in pan on a wire rack.

Stockton ag businessman grows market share with down home quality

What began as an exercise in character building has grown into a lifestyle for Stockton’s Drew Groezinger.

“When I was young my grandpa always said that I needed chores and responsibilities and gardening fit the bill because I’m not really into big field crops like corn and soy beans,” said Groezinger.

His parents both grew up on farms and had considerable gardening experience, so it was natural for them to undertake a horticultural project together.

Their operation, Groezinger’s Farm, is a small Community Supported Agricultural enterprise located just South of Stockton. And, although it is a family business, the driving force is Drew Groezinger.

At present Groezinger is a student at Highland Community College.

Today, Groezinger’s plantings cover 25 to 30,000 square foot. There

The Illinois Lottery suspended sales of tickets for the popular multi-state game at 9:00 p.m. on June 28, with Mega Millions sales halted at 9:45 p.m. on June 30. State officials said that if a Fiscal Year 2018 lottery appropriation is passed, they will work with the Multi-State Lottery Association to determine how to restore the games for Illinois players.

In addition, while sales for Illinois-based lottery games remain ongoing, winning tickets with prizes greater than $25,000 will face a delay before they are paid.

The crops produced range from carrots to tomatoes to pumpkins and stretch to dahlias and other flowering perennials such as succulents and native plants. Many of the flowering plants are not just ornamental, but are in fact pollinators that can be used in gardens to attract bees and butterflies. The farm yields 50 varieties of produce.

“We grow 10 varieties of tomatoes in our greenhouse, all of which are popular with buyers,” Groezinger said. “We offer two kinds of bell peppers, Big Bertha and King Edward, and at this time, we have 17 varieties of garlic. In the open air growing plots are rows of eggplant, carrots, squash and pumpkins. You’ll notice the marigolds growing between the plants outdoors. They’re a natural deterrent to deer and rabbit predation.”

He said they’ve found a niche with fingerling potatoes.

“They produce in good quantity and buyers like them,” Groezinger said. “We’ve also had success selling dahlias as well as native plants which people can plant in their gardens.”

Groezinger also has farm fresh eggs available for purchase.

As for the business end of Community Supported Agriculture, his season is 20 weeks which runs from about mid-June to the end of October.

“This isn’t a traditional CSA,” he

said. “Most operations sell a one time share which covers the length of the season. Understanding that such an arrangement may not be affordable for everyone, our customers can pay weekly, monthly or once for the entire season.”

In addition to selling seasonal shares Groezinger’ goods are available at different farm markets.

“We’re fortunate to have a space at the Galena Territory Farm Market,” he said. “That venue regularly draws a large crowd with a number of loyal buyers.”

When Groezinger finishes his studies at Highland he plans to continue his education at UW Platteville where he will be studying farm production and agricultural business.

As for the future of alternative farming, Groezinger said there will always be a need and room for specialty producers.

“Even now I’ve had discussions with restaurateurs who want not only garden fresh goods, but specific kinds of greens,” he said. “Alternative opportunities for growers continue to increase. As the popularity of craft beers, brewed locally, continues to expand it may not be long before we see more farmers growing hops in our area.”

Independence Day and fireworks go hand in hand, but fireworks shouldn’t go in consumers’ hands.

That’s the message the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) is reinforcing this Fourth of July. Fireworks annually cause devastating burns, injuries, fires, and even death, making them too dangerous to be used safely by consumers.

“Each year, thousands of people are injured from using consumer fireworks,” said Lorraine Carli, NFPA’s vice president of Outreach and Advocacy. “Even sparklers, which are often thought of as harmless enough for children to hold, burn at 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit and can cause significant injuries.”

NFPA takes aim at consumer fireworks. View the latest public service announcement, featuring Dan Doofus, urging people not to use consumer fireworks because they are too dangerous.

On Independence Day in a typical year, fireworks account for two out of five of all reported U.S. fires, more than any other cause of fire.

On average each year, fireworks start 18,500 fires, including 1,300 structure fires, 300 vehicle fires, and 16,900 outside and other fires. These fires cause an annual average of three deaths, 40 civilian injuries, and $43 million in direct property damage.

However, the vast majority of fireworks injuries occur without a fire starting. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s (CPSC) 2015 Fireworks Annual Report, U.S. hospital emergency rooms treated an estimated 11,900 people for fireworks-related injuries; 51 percent of those injuries were to the extremities and 41 percent were to the head. Two-thirds (65 percent) of the injuries were burns, Children younger than 15 years of age accounted for one-quarter (26 percent) of the estimated injuries. Sparklers were the leading cause of fireworks injuries. More than half of the fireworks injuries incurred by children under five years of age were caused by sparklers.

“Knowing the harm fireworks inflict each year, particularly among young people, we urge everyone to leave fireworks to the professionals who are trained to safely put on spectacular displays. It is by far the safest way to enjoy them,” said Carli.
