Over the course of the 2018-2019 school year, the Lena-Winslow athletes have had a few impressive verbal commitments to attend some of the nation’s top colleges to continue their sports careers. The first came from well known, powerhouse athlete Isaiah Bruce. Bruce has been one of the area’s top football players over the course of his career, and near the end of his junior season his hard work paid off. In November 2018, Bruce was able to make a verbal commitment to attend the University of Iowa, where he will play football for the Hawkeyes.

Although Bruce looks like one of the biggest guys on the field during his high school games, he will come in a bit undersized when he joins Iowa’s squad. Despite being just six foot, one inch tall, the Hawkeyes are more than confident in what the three-star recruit will bring to the table. Let us not forget, Bruce still has another year of growing left to do as a Panther. Although Bruce took a break from basketball last season, he has been a lifelong three sport athlete, and has shown the ability to dominate in all three of his sports (football, basketball, and track).

There is an early belief that Bruce will be lining up on the defensive line, as Iowa has shown an impressive history at making shorter defensive tackles succeed. As dominant as Bruce is on the defensive line, we have seen his abilities on the offensive side of the ball as well. Bruce was nearly unstoppable when he lined up at tight end for the Panthers in 2018, and could be even more impressive when he returns for his senior season. Overall, Bruce is an absolute powerhouse in every sport he takes part in, whether he’s tackling ball carriers in the backfield, placing seventh in the state track competitions as just a sophomore, or running on the 4x200 team that came in second, the Hawkeyes got themselves

a hardworking, speedy athlete for the class of 2020. Bruce has received interest from many of the top schools in the Midwest, including a recent offer from Northwestern, but it appears he is set on attending the University of Iowa. Bruce is familiar with the area, as his older brother Tevin recently graduated from the school.

More recently, the Hawkeyes picked up their second recruit of the year in soon to be junior Gennings Dunker. Dunker was one of the area’s stop offensive lineman as just a sophomore and stands at an impressive six foot, five inches tall, and still growing.

He was six foot one during his freshman year.

Dunker attended a football camp at the University of Iowa earlier this spring, and immediately committed after being offered a scholarship from the staff. Born in Des Moines, IA, and growing up as a Hawkeyes fan, Dunker’s dream has been to play for the Hawkeyes and he will get to make that dream come true when he joins as a class of 2021 recruit to play on the offensive line.

Dunker is another three-sport athlete, showing hard work and the ability to run despite his large size, as he dominates the line in football, is excellent on the mat in wrestling, and shows his surprising speed on the track in spring time. Iowa often goes after guys with great size and athletic ability, and Dunker fits that description to a T. It says a lot about the Lena-Winslow football team to be sending not one, but two athletes from class 1A to an FBS school. While it is exciting to think about watching these two teammates compete together at the next level, I strongly recommend keeping an eye on them as they play together this season. The two will look to dominate the field and lead the team to another successful season as they go after a State championship one last time together.

Slow Cooker Vidalia Onion Dip

1/3 C. canola oil 1/3 C. red wine vinegar 1 T. sugar 2 t. minced green onion ½ t. paprika ¼ t. Worcestershire sauce 2 C. fresh strawberries, washed, hulled and halved In a skillet over medium heat, stir sesame seeds until golden; set aside.

Wash spinach thoroughly; dry on paper towels and tear into bite-size pieces. Wrap and chill. Blend oil, vinegar, sugar, onion, paprika, and Worcestershire sauce. In a large glass bowl, mix together spinach, strawberries, dressing and seeds.

This chicken salad is really good with the chicken, grapes, snow peas, and spinach. The pasta makes it hearty enough to serve as a lunch or a dinner meal. The dressing uses white wine vinegar and a little lemon for a fresh flavor. Enjoy this chicken salad with a crusty roll, and you have a light summer meal.

Skillet Beef and Macaroni

1 ½ lbs. ground beef ½ C. chopped onion 2 cans (8 oz. each) tomato sauce 1 C. water 1 pkg. (7 oz.) macaroni ½ C. chopped green pepper 2 T. Worcestershire sauce 1 t. salt ¼ t. pepper In a large skillet over medium-high heat, cook beef and onion until meat is no longer pink; drain. Stir in remaining ingredients; bring to a boil.

Reduce heat and simmer, covered until macaroni is tender, stirring occasionally, 20 to 25 minutes. Add more water or extra tomato juice if macaroni has soaked all of the liquid.

Sprinkle with shredded cheddar on individual servings if desired.

This delicious frozen pie is a good one for a summer dessert. I like the Keebler crusts for graham cracker pie crusts. I also think their shortbread crusts and chocolate cookie crusts are good too. The recipe calls for the berries to be macerated. That simply means to let them stand in the sugar until there is juice on the fruit.

Frozen Strawberry Lemonade Pie

1 prepared graham cracker crust Filling: 1 C. chopped strawberries ½ C. raspberries ¼ C. sugar 1 T. water 4 oz. cream cheese, at room temperature ¾ C. sweetened condensed milk 1 T. finely grated lemon zest plus ½ C. fresh lemon juice from 2 to 3 lemons 1 C. cold heavy cream Topping: 3 T. strawberry jelly 1 C. strawberries, halved Bring the strawberries, sugar and water to a boil in a small saucepan over medium-high heat. Reduce the heat and simmer until liquid is syrupy and the fruit is very soft, 4 to 5 minutes. Strain through a fine mesh sieve, pressing gently on the solids with a rubber spatula; discard the solids. Let the syrup cool.

Beat the softened cream cheese in a large bowl with a mixer on medium-high speed until smooth and creamy, about 30 seconds. Add the condensed milk and beat until smooth. Add the berry syrup and the lemon zest as well as the juice and beat until smooth.

In a separate bowl, beat the heavy cream with clean beaters until medium peaks form. Gently fold the whipped cream into the cream cheese mixture using a rubber spatula until no streaks remain. Spoon the filling into the crust and spread with the back of a spoon. Cover with plastic wrap and freeze until firm, at least 4 hours.

About 10 minutes before serving remove the pie from the freezer to soften slightly. Make the topping: Microwave the jelly in a medium bowl until runny, 20 to 30 seconds.

Whisk until smooth. Add the strawberries and gently stir to coat. Let macerate 10 to 15 minutes. Top with strawberry mixture and cut into pieces.

This dessert is a beautiful dessert in a Truffle bowl. If you don’t have a truffle bowl, you can make it in a clear glass bowl also. The pound cake is delicious and you only use ½ of the cake for this dessert. You can freeze the other half and pull it

Garnish with orange slices My mother used to make her goulash much like this recipe. I like it because you don’t have to heat up the oven to make it, and it is a quick way to get dinner on the table. Mom used to sauté in a little oil finely chopped celery for a little zip. If you are a garlic lover, you could mince a garlic clove and add it to the onion and celery before browning the ground beef. The pasta really does cook up when adding it dry to the mixture. I like a little cheese sprinkled on mine.

Serve it with crusty bread and a salad.

ALMA J. SCHEELE Alma J. Scheele, 96, of Elkhorn, WI formerly of Warren, IL passed away at Lakeland Health Care Center in Elkhorn, WI on Sunday, June 30, 2019.

She was born on January 21, 1923 in Mt. Clemmens, MI to Henry and Grace (Longfield) Craft. She married Arthur Scheele on June 16, 1951; he preceded her in death on June 23, 1990. Alma farmed alongside her husband Arthur

in the Apple River IL area until their retirement in 1984, when they moved to Warren.

She was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church in Warren. Alma enjoyed flowers, gardening, sewing and being active in her church, especially traveling on mission trips. She came to know the Lord in a very personal manner when she recognized her sinfulness before a Holy God, and the amazing grace of forgiveness, available to her through the sacrifice of

Harriet married David L. Bushman on February 11, 1943 in LaSalle, IL. A teacher, Harriet taught Speech, Drama and English for 22 years at Milledgeville, Independence, IA, Chadwick, Freeport and Sterling High School. Harriet was a member of the Milledgeville United Methodist Church, Freeport YMCA, Retired Teachers Association, Heritage League of Stockton, 50-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star, and served on the Library Board for 26 years. LARRY L “GOV” LARSON Larry L “Gov” Larson, 73, of Lena, IL passed away on July 1, 2019 at his home, with his family by his side. He was born in Dodgeville, WI the son of Charles “Red” Larson and Glenda (Mullen) Young. Larry was the second of nine children. He was a 1964 graduate of Hanover High School and Morrison Institute of Technology. He was employed by Kelly-Springfield Tire Co., and later the Illinois Dept. of Transportation. Prior to his retirement he enjoyed golfing, his pontoon boat, watching the Chicago Bears, Alabama football, and hockey. Larry cherished the time he spent with his family, especially his grandchildren and going to their sporting events.

Larry will be dearly missed by his wife of 53 years, Shirley (Solace) Larson; sons Tim (Heather) Larson of Stockton, Carey Larson of Stockton; daughter Stephanie (Tom) Madigan of Lena; seven grandchildren, Kendall Schulz, Eli, Quinn, and Annastyn Larson all of Stockton, Kieran, Luke, and Dylan Madigan all of Lena; his mother Glenda Young of Freeport; brothers Gary (Marsha) Larson of Lena, Terry (Diane) Larson of East Troy, WI, Dennis (Susy) Young of Stockton; sisters Lou (Rodney) Brandt of Stockton, Laurie (Randy) Samples of Freeport, Kristi (Dennis) Boyer of Stockton, and Kathi (Dennis) Starr of Stockton.

Larry was preceded in death by his father Red, his stepfather Henry Young; sister Paty (Young) Dampman and brother-in-law Randy Samples.

A celebration of Larry’s life was Friday, July 5, at the Leamon Funeral Home in Lena, IL. Cremation rites have been accorded.

A private family memorial will be at a later date.

A memorial has been established in Larry’s memory.

On nice days, keep your eye out for me around town. I’ll be taking my office hours” outside to random locations. If you spot me, stop by for a chat, I even have treats! If you are on Face Book , check our church page where I post clues about my location. I’ll be out enjoying God’s beautiful creation – although I may send up a few complaints about the gnats.

I look forward to having random conversations with those who stop by!

Also keep an ear open for other “outdoor church” opportunities – barbecue worship is in the plans.

Summer is a time when we are more likely to see neighbors, so as we are out-and-about this summer, look for opportunities to get to know folks. I’m always surprised how even in a town where “everyone is related” there are still folks who fall through the cracks and could use a friendly word or wave.

Dinner will be served at 5:30 p.m. followed by skits, music, crafts, and Bible teachings games. It will be a memorable time for children as they develop friendships with one another as well as the Lord Jesus. This year the VBS offering will help to support Stephenson County’s Ramp program.

July 7, 14, 21, and 28 - Sunday church services will focus on “Unraveled” seeking God when our plans fall apart. How do we press onward when our tightly-knit plans unravel into loose threads? July services emphasize: Unexpected Joy and Surprise, Unraveled by Uncertainty, Public Grief that Inspires Action, and Radical Unraveling of Vocation.

(Continued from page 4) and Mary Ann (McNabb) Henry. He was raised in Pearl City along with his brother, Jim, and sister, Judy. Steve served in the United States Army during Vietnam, receiving the Bronze Star Medal for Heroism. One of his battalion’s trucks carrying ammunition hit a mine and exploded. The Bronze Star Award announcement reads, “With complete disregard for his own safety, Specialist Henry evacuated an injured comrade to safety. Although receiving burns, Specialist Henry continued to help the medics give first aid to the other wounded men. His valorous actions were responsible for saving a man’s life.” Steve never told this story.

After his military service, Steve settled in Chadwick, Illinois. He began working at Handle Implement in 1971, and remained employed as a mechanic until his retirement from Birkey’s in 2015. He was very knowledgeable in the repair and maintenance of International Harvesters.

Steve is will be dearly missed by his son, John (Sharon) Henry of Maxwell, Iowa and several nieces, nephews and good friends. Steve was preceded in death by his parents, his siblings, and a son, Joel Burton Henry.

BRETT “DUSTY” LUKE Brett “Dusty” Luke, age 40 of Stockton, IL passed away Tuesday, July 2, 2019 at OSF St. Anthony’s Hospital in Rockford, IL. A funeral service will be held, Thursday, July 11 at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Stockton, IL at 11am. There will be a visitation from 9 to 11 a.m. on Thursday, prior to the service.

Dusty was born Oct. 9, 1978 in Freeport, IL, the son of Don Luke and Chris (Boyle) Tippett. He attended Stockton schools and graduated from Stockton High School with the class of 1996.

On Sept. 6, 2003, Dusty married Wendy Gallagher of Stockton. They have 3 children, Gracie (12), Jeremiah (11), and Silas (3).

In the early portion of Dusty’s professional life, he worked as a mason, before working for M & M Concrete for a number of years. Dusty was an avid hunter and fisherman. He loved to spend his free time fishing with his children. He also greatly enjoyed watching football, and following his favorite teams; the Chicago Bears, and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.

Dusty will be dearly missed by his wife, Wendy; three children, Gracie, Jeremiah, and Silas; parents, Don (Angie) Luke of Stockton and Chris (Russ) Tippett of Stockton; two grandmothers, Winnie Luke of Apple River, IL and Nola Hopkins of Stockton; one brother, Brad Luke of Stockton; one sister, Kelly (Logan) Staver of Stockton; two brothers in law, Dustin (Tamara) Gallagher of Tinley Park, IL and Greg (Felicia) Gallagher of Dunlap, IL; two step brothers, Evan Hill of Stockton, and Quinn (Sarah) Hill of Apple River; one step sister, Daely (Jesse) Tippett of Stockton; and many uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Dusty is preceded in death by his grandfathers, Ralph Luke and Owen Boyle; and his mother in law, Nancy Haas.

Millions of dollars pour into the treatment of migraines using medications which only address symptoms yet never resolve the underlying cause.

Chiropractic spinal adjustments provide one of the most effective interventions for people suffering with migraine headaches. The limitations to current pharmacological therapies highlight the need to explore alternative or integrative care for headaches. Newly published research shows the effectiveness of Chiropractic care for those suffering from migraines. Chiropractic adjustments deliver a significant effect that lowers the pain intensity of migraines, the duration of migraine pain, and the number of days migraine sufferers have to deal with pain.

Spinal adjustments improve function in the brain and central nervous system and help balance hormones associated with migraine headache pain.

The purpose of Chiropractic involves gently adjusting misaligned or immobile vertebra with the intention to improve nervous system communication from the brain to the body. The position and movement of the spine intimately connects to the health of the central nervous system. An altered spinal segment causes interference which impacts overall health. Poor vertebral position traces back to a number of traumatic origins ranging from physical injury to the stresses of life.

One outcome manifests as imbalanced stress hormones which produce migraine headaches.

Chiropractors specifically evaluate the alignment and mobility of the spine to ensure proper communication between the brain and the body.

Other interventions known to support the influence of a Chiropractic adjustment in helping migraine sufferers include spinal stabilization exercises, deep breathing techniques, soft tissue massage, stretching, nutrition, and ergonomic modifications.

Many people suffering from migraines believe that medication provides the only form of pain relief. Meanwhile, pharmaceutical medications represent some of the most dangerous drugs on the market due to their toxicity, potency, and potential for addiction and harm. In a medium bowl, sift together flour baking soda. With mixer on low Strawberry Pound Cake and speed, gradually add flour mixture to Trifle butter mixture alternately with eggs, Cake: 1 C. unsalted butter, softened one at a time, and beating well after 3 C. sugar each addition. Beat in vanilla. Pour 1 C. sour cream, room temperature batter into prepared pan. Bake until 3 C. flour golden brown and a wooden pick in½ t. baking soda serted near center comes out clean, 6 large eggs, room temperature about 80 minutes.

1 t. vanilla Trifle: 2 lbs. fresh strawberries, Preheat oven to 325. Butter and hulled and quartered flour a 10-inch tube pan. In a large ½ C. sugar bowl, beat butter and sugar with a 1 pkg. (8 oz.) cream cheese, softmixer at medium speed until fluffy, ened 3 to 4 minutes, stopping to scrape the 1¼ C. powdered sugar

1 container (8 oz.) frozen whipped topping, thawed ½ pound cake, cubed Fresh strawberries for garnish In a medium bowl, combine strawberries and sugar. Let stand until juices are released, 15 to 30 minutes.

In a large bowl, beat cream cheese and powdered sugar with a mixer at medium speed until smooth. Fold in whipped topping.

In a large trifle dish, layer half of cubed pound cake, half of strawberry mixture,, and half of cream mixture.

Repeat layers once. Refrigerate for at least 4 hours before serving. Garnish with strawberries.

Now that the Fourth of July has passed, next up in our area is the Stephenson County Fair. I mentioned earlier in the column that the extended forecast says it will be cooler and less humid. We usually have some kind of rain during that week just to make it interesting! Good luck to all those people who put a lot of work into getting animals, people, and projects ready for the fair. Hopefully it will be a success for all those hard working people who put so much effort into it.
