Orangeville falls in Super Sectional CORRESPONDENT

After a few days of rainy weather and multiple reschedules and cancellations, the fifth ranked Orangeville Bronco’s softball squad was able to face off with the fourth ranked Glasford Illini Bluffs Tiger’s team for the Class 1A Super Sectional game last Wednesday. The benefit of the reschedules was that it allowed the teams to compete on some above average turf, when the game was moved to the Louisville Slugger Sport’s Complex. The Tigers came in with a 23-5 record, and despite having a freshman pitcher and catcher, they were able to put the lack of experience aside and take the win over the high-powered Broncos squad. The Broncos came in at 26-5, although they ranked just behind the Illini Bluff’s Tigers. The top teams would compete for an opportunity to move on into the final four part of the tournament.

Perhaps the artificial turf came back to bite Orangeville, as the Broncos dug their own grave in the first inning when a few defensive errors allowed the Tigers to take advantage and jump out to an early 3-0 lead. It is not often that the first inning will decide a game, but those three runs turned out to be crucial deciding factors in this one. It was the first time the Broncos had played on artificial turf this season. The Broncos did not get a hit until the third inning, when Tessa Janecke drilled a ball to the center field fence, allowing her to show off her speed as she rounded the bases for a triple. Tori Plowman then helped herself out, as she drove in Janecke to score with a suicide squeeze as they cut the Tiger’s lead to just two runs. Not long after, Payton Meier hit a single up the middle to bring in Katelyn Boomgarden, bringing the score to a 3-2 Tiger’s advantage. After being forced to play for a

comeback throughout the entire game, it put a lot of pressure on the Bronco’s offense. A pressure that they were unable to overcome, as they were held to just four hits throughout the elite eight matchup. The Broncos batters struggled to make contact against the freshman pitcher, as the struck out over ten times in the game. The Broncos had some quality pitching of their own, however. As usual, Tori Plowman was on the mound for the Broncos, and she did everything in her power to keep them in the game after the rough defensive first inning. Plowman was able to hold the Tigers to just four hits as well, and she retired the final nine batters in or-

der, while striking out a pair of batters. Plowman brought her A game in this one, and if it wasn’t for the errors from the first inning, she would have gotten the Broncos the win. The Tigers were able to pick up an insurance run midway through the game and they would hold onto the 4-2 lead until the end as they earned their first trip to the final four since 2013. The Tigers are hot at the right time as the victory was their seventh in a row. Often times in the big games between two top teams, one inning can become the ultimate decision maker. If it wasn’t for the three unearned runs that came early on, who knows how this game would have turned out.

Lon Scheuerell, who has now finished his eighteenth season as head coach, now sits with a career record of over four hundred wins, and he will look to return with an improved, more experienced team in his nineteenth year. The team graduates lone senior Katie Boomgarden, who will be very tough to replace as she played a large role on the Broncos offense throughout her career with Orangeville. She was also one of the Bronco’s top pitchers, and an all-state defender at short stop and catcher. Despite the loss of such a competitive athlete, the Broncos have much to
