Lena Winslow Begins Offseason Program The Lena Winslow Panthers basketball squads have begun their offseason programs, including summer basketball games and tournaments. Summer basketball allows for the teams to stay in touch with the game while building their chemistry for the upcoming season. It is also a great opportunity for some of the younger guys to get their first varsity experiences before it all really starts to matter. While the summer programs are huge opportunities for the kids, it also provides an opportunity for the coaches to evaluate their players development and consistency in their new programs. The Lena Winslow boy’s squad has had an eventful month of June, with games against teams from both Illinois and Wisconsin. Earlier in the month on June 8, the boys participated in the University of Wisconsin- Platteville tournament for a round robin battle. The boys came out as champions after defeating Platteville, West Delaware, and Lancaster High School’s. The team followed that up by hosting New Glarus and Warren High School’s for a three-way tournament on June 10. A week later, the boys were initially supposed to face off with Forreston and Morrison boy’s squads but ended up only playing Morrison in a double header. Most recently, the Freshman-Sophomore squad, and Varsity squad participated in another tournament across the border in Wisconsin, this time in Monroe. The Freshman-Sophomore games took place on Saturday, after facing off with both Beloit Turner and Mineral Point squads, the younger team ended their day with two wins and two losses. So, despite a somewhat successful day, the team is still in an area of growth and need for improvement. The Varsity squad’s tournament was held on Sunday. After a couple

of early games against the Darlington Cardinals and the Belleville Wildcats teams, the Panthers came out of the tournament with a 2-1 record. The team believes they have room to grow but walked away from the tournament with many positives to build on. Overall, the Panthers have had a successful experience throughout their summer league opportunities and look poised to return as one of the top teams in the conference once again this next season. Stockton Lady Blackhawks Begin Summer League The Stockton Lady Blackhawks have begun their offseason Summer League program. The team, coming off another successful season in 2018-2019, look to improve and gain experience for some of the new kids as they get their first varsity experiences. Head coach Tim Timpe believes the Summer League is very important for the team’s success during the upcoming season. “Summer ball is not only important for the player development but also for the coach to evaluate the team and find out what we need to get better at going into the season. It helps us evaluate the players and find out what they can do to help our team.” Tim said. He also touched on other ways summer league can be beneficial, saying “We also enjoy being together for at least one overnight tournament just so the players can get to know each other better and become closer as a team.” Although summer league is important for improvement, Coach Timpe stresses the fact that it takes more than a few summer games to develop what it takes to be successful. “One month of playing basketball is not going to make the player improve. They have to put more work into the offseason than just one month to become they best player they can be.” Tim said.

My Friend’s Closet Thrift Store awards scholarships On Wednesday night, June 12, eight graduating Seniors received scholarship awards from My Friend’s Closet Thrift Store. This is the first year that My Friend’s Closet has taken advantage of the opportunity to support the graduating seniors in our area with scholarships to help with furthering their education. Because of the hard work and dedication of the many volunteers, we have been blessed in many ways to support needy families, missions and ministries and now graduating senior. The decisions in choosing the recipients were very hard to make as we were surprised

and overwhelmed to have received so many well qualified applications. My Friend’s Closet is a ministry of St. John’s Lutheran Church. We operate solely by volunteers from every walk of life – all churches, all ages, all genders participate in this ministry. The committee based their decision on the information provided to us by the applicants which weighed heavily in volunteerism, church involvement, and service within the community as well as personal inspiration and influences in their lives. We were able to offer four $2,000 scholarships and four $500 scholarships.

This year’s recipients are: Justin Malone, graduated from Orangeville. Justin plans to attend the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. We are very proud to acknowledge Justin and his accomplishments. Alyssa Vincent, graduated from Stockton. Alyssa plans to attend Concordia University, Wisconsin. We couldn’t help but appreciate Alyssa and her goals in life as God has blessed her and her abilities.
