Broncos finish third, topping off breakthrough season

By Trenten Scheidegger CORRESPONDENT

The Orangeville Broncos varsity softball squad had a year to remember in 2021. Early in the year, many questioned whether the 2021 spring softball season would even happen, including the Broncos players and Head Coach Lon Scheuerell. “We were concerned there was not even going to be a season because of COVID,” Scheuerell said following the team’s campaign.

Not only were the Broncos able to play and compete in a 2021 season, they also made an historic run as the first team in program history to reach the state tournament. 2021 was a breakthrough year for the program and Scheuerell, as they had fallen just short in the Super-Sectional in 2018 and 2019. The Broncos had reached the Super Sectional just one time before, in 2008, where the team also fell short of reaching state. Finally, in 2021, in one

of the most bizarre seasons in the history of high school sports, the Broncos were able to push through the barrier that had held them back three times before. After beating Pearl City in the Sectional Championship, on June 10, the Broncos found themselves in the same position they had been in the last two seasons, the Super Sectional. In 2018, the Broncos lost 6-2 to Cuba-Spoon River Valley. The next year, they fell just short again, losing 4-2 to

Illini Bluffs. 2021 was different for all of us, but it would be a special kind of different for the Broncos. On June 14, the Broncos made history as they faced off with Williamsfield on a neutral site. The Broncos were the first on the board with a three-run inning in the top of the third. Small ball sparked the offense as a bunt by Payton Meier drove in the game’s first run. Following that bunt, the Broncos had no issues on offense, as they went on to score four runs in the top of the fourth and two insurance runs in the fifth. Orangeville tallied 18 hits on the game, as their offense was too much for Williamsfield. The Broncos were bound and determined to reach state, and they finally broke through with an 11-4 victory in the Super Sectional. Tori Plowman was electric on both sides of the ball, as she pitched a gem and led the team offensively. Plowman threw all seven innings with just four runs allowed, while going 2-for-4 at the plate with three runs batted in. McKayla Riemer was nearly unstoppable, going 4-for-5 with two doubles and three RBIs. Megan Holder finished the game 3-for-5 with an RBI

Face masks continue to be required for everyone at all Monroe Clinic facilities, per Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidance.

Monroe Clinic keeps mask requirement in place Masks continue to be universally required for everyone age 5 and up at all Monroe Clinic facilities regardless of vaccination status or expiration of public health orders, according to a news release from the health care organization. “The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention specifically notes that its new masking recommendations for fully vaccinated people do not apply to health care settings, and health care facilities should continue to follow infection prevention and control guidance,” the release

said. “Our facilities provide care for medically vulnerable patients, including those who are immunosuppressed or too young to be vaccinated. We must continue to enforce pandemic-response safety measures to protect everyone in our local hospital and clinics.” Additional CDC guidelines in place at Monroe Clinic locations include continued screening for all visitors, practicing physical distancing and limiting the number of visitors.
