Coach’s Golf and Grill and Lena Sons of the American Legion host annual fun run By Tony Carton EDITOR
The Lena Sons of The American Legion hosted their tenth annual Fun Run on Saturday starting and ending at Coach’s Golf and Grill located at 621 West Main Street (Stagecoach Trail) in Lena. “We have a fun run every year and 2016 is our tenth anniversary,” said Lena Sons of the Legion financial officer John Costello. “We have the Illinois Traveling Memorial Wall set up and we will have a variety of fund raising activities throughout the day and into the evening including the fun run that will travel 148 miles through NW Illinois and SW Wisconsin with stops at various fun run sponsors.” The run kicked off at Coach’s Golf & Grill in Lena, Illinois and headed north to Swiss Valley Harley Davidson in Monroe, from there the riders visited Hawk’s Mill Winery outside Browntown, then Anton’s Saloon in New Diggings, and Council Hill Station in Scales Mound. Entertainment and refreshments were available at all the stops on the run and the folks at Galena Cellars Vineyard outside Galena, and Massbach Ridge Winery outside Elizabeth,
pulled out all the stops to welcome the visitors. The road then turned south to Iron Horse Social Club in Savanna, before heading back to Coach’s Golf & Grill / Stage Coach Golf Course in Lena, for an evening of entertainment with Luann, Michelle, and Whoever Shows Up. “Last year we drew 130 riders and with the better weather we’re seeing today I expect we will do even better this year,” said Costello. The Illinois Traveling Memorial Wall was in Lena for the run and moves throughout the state of Illinois traveling as much as 60,000 miles to set up for 60 showings this year alone. Presently there are 261 names and faces of fallen Illinois soldiers on the memorial. The wall represents operations in Iraq and Afghanistan and its purpose is to remind folks that there are fallen soldiers from the State of Illinois and those who serve are the reason we have the freedoms we have today. There can be no question but that the wall is a powerful statement. “The names are all logged and if anyone wants to know where a particular photograph is we have the log and we can look it up and take them directly to the site of the per-
son they are interested in finding,” said Costello. “The traveling wall project is sponsored by the Illinois Patriot Guard motorcycle riders.” The Illinois Patriot Guard is a well known group populated by individuals with diverse professional and personal backgrounds, who all share an unwavering respect for those who risk their very lives for America’s freedom and security.
Their main mission is attending the funeral services of fallen American heroes (military and first responders) as invited guests of the family. The guard seeks only to honor the fallen, support their families, friends and communities and shield them from uninvited guests and/or protestors. They do not engage in political, protest or counter-protest activities in the execution of their mission.
Instead, The Illinois Patriot Guard shields those who might be affected by uninvited guests and/or protestors by strategically positioning themselves while holding American flags. The Illinois Patriot Guard does not charge for their support because they are honored and privileged to provide it.
