Former Le-Win star heading to East Dubuque By Trenten Scheidegger SPORTS WRITER
Former Lena-Winslow standout Joe Edler has taken his first varsity head coaching job with the East Dubuque Warriors. Edler quarterbacked the Panthers’ 2010 state championship team under Ric Arand. Arand has led the Panthers to 21 straight playoff appearances and four state championships, so he certainly knows a thing or two about winning. Edler said he learned a bit about that in the NUIC from Arand and his staff. “In high school we were pretty successful and made it to the semifinals my junior year and then went on to win the state title my senior year,” Edler said. “It was an amazing experience and something that I will never forget. I’ve learned a lot from Ric and the entire coaching staff at Le-Win, and one of the biggest takeaways from playing at Le-Win and coaching in the conference is you have to run the ball to be successful.” Arand and the Panthers are a wellknown, run-dominant team. Edler hopes to develop his own successful running system. “If a team can run the ball successfully in the NUIC they have a great chance at making the playoffs and going far in the playoffs.” After his playing days, Edler spent three seasons with the Orangeville Broncos as a member of Jay Doyle’s staff, gaining experience from another side of the NUIC. “Jay and the entire staff taught me a lot about the game of football and how to build a program,” Edler said. “I was part of a rebuilding period there, and Jay was able to turn that program
around. As a staff we worked together and made the weight room a priority. The kids bought in, and it shows on the field. They are a tough, physical team, and they will continue to be with Steve Snider as the new head coach.” Edler took the past season off to watch his brother lead the Le-Win to another state title and shared what it was like to have multiple rings in the family. “It was a feeling I can’t really describe, but it was definitely fun to say the least,” Edler said. “The memories always are there, especially after watching my brother (Sean Ormiston) win another one this year with Le-Win. I guess he has the bragging rights because he has two rings, but I’m OK with that.” Edler watched Ormiston cap off his Panthers career with an incredible six-touchdown game in the 2019 state final. Now, as the latter takes his playing career to the Iowa Hawkeyes, Edler is taking his next career step in taking the reigns of the Warriors. Edler said it was interesting to make his big announcement considering everything going on in the world today. “The announcement went well, but it was definitely different doing it on Zoom that’s for sure,” he said. “The entire nation is going through this unique time, and it is definitely a challenge taking over a program during a pandemic. “With that being said, I love the challenge it brings, and the players are taking this issue head on,” Edler added. “They are excited and want to get started, so now it’s just a waiting game. We have been doing a lot of Zoom meetings with the players and using technology to our advantage.”
