Pearl City reflects on a great run to close By Chris Johnson

SPORTS CORRESPONDENT

Another great year is in the books for the Pearl City Lady Wolves and they have a lot to look back at, when it comes to how far they made it this year. The IHSA Class 1A State Softball Playoffs have crowned their champions and the weeding out process of the past three weeks of action assured the strongest would make it to the end. Sometimes a team surprises and throws the brackets into a twist. During the 2017 post-season, that’s exactly what the six-seed Lady Wolves did. Each night provided another opportunity to pull off the upset, which was a common staple throughout the Class 1A Tournament for Pearl City. Because of their six-seed classification at the start of the State Tournament, Pearl City had to play on opening night. On Monday, May 15, the post-season and the march began for the Lady Wolves. Freeport Aquin was the only lower seed Pearl City defeated this post-season. The Lady Bulldogs fell in a rules-shortened 12-0 affair. The win moved Pearl City on to the Eastland Class 1A Regional

Semi-Final and a shot at the top-seed in Lanark, the home team Lady Cougars. Kendra Melville was un-hittable, she shutdown the two-seed’s dangerous offense and made the 2-0 decision stand as the Lady Wolves kept the success streak going. In 2016 Pearl City had to knock of Lena-Winslow to advance. It was the same situation during the 2017 post-season. The Lady Panthers were issued the three-seed. They were expected to have a battle on their hands from whichever team came out of the other half of the Eastland 1A Bracket. Pearl City wasn’t really supposed to be there. Eastland was heavily favored in the Semi-Final. Pearl City used the metaphoric “late-inning heroics” as they tripped up the three-seed Lady Panthers and captured the Eastland Regional Title. The win moved Pearl City on to Dakota and gave them a shot at attempting to track down the Sectional Crown. Amboy was extremely balanced this season. The offense was explosive and the pitching, discouraging

The award from the CDC and CDC Foundation, honors individuals who have made significant contributions in improving public health through their work in childhood immunizations. Ann Lewandowski, Coordinator for Southern Wisconsin Immunization Consortium, explained several reasons this recognition is significant for patients and community members. “The first reason is for people to

know Lori is working for them to protect their children from preventable disease,” said Lewandowski. Early in her 32 years as a pediatric LPN, Plenge witnessed unnecessary suffering as the result of missed vaccinations. She’s focused her career by preventing illness by increasing patient communication about missed vaccinations. “It is very satisfying to see a child’s immunization record up to date and know they are protected,” said Plenge.
