Lena-Winslow baseball extends winning streak to thirteen Trenten Scheidegger CORRESPONDENT
The Lena-Winslow Panthers have hit their stride in the 2022 baseball season. After an 0-4 start, Le-Win has won thirteen straight, making the losing streak feel like a lifetime ago. The Panthers picked up four more wins last week, including an April 28 victory over the Orangeville Broncos. Orangeville came into the matchup with a record of 0-11 as they have struggled through the 2022 season. In baseball anything is possible, however,
and the Broncos were hopeful to defend their home field by upsetting the 11-4 Panthers. Le-Win had other plans in mind, however. The Panthers wasted little time getting on the scoreboard as they posted three runs in the top of the first inning. After a one-out triple by Brody Mahon, Jake Zeal was hit by a pitch and Ethan Fye singled to left, allowing both Mahon and Zeal to score. With two outs, Maddex Sargent roped a double to center field, driving in Fye and putting the Panthers up 3-0. Mahon was also on the
mound for the Panthers, where he gave the Broncos trouble, early on. After holding Orangeville off the scoreboard through the first two innings, the Panthers would extend their lead in the top of the third. Following a walk to Fye, he would go on to steal second base and reach third by way of an error. Luke Benson then tallied his first run batted in of the game as a sacrifice fly to left put Le-Win up 4-0. Orangeville would respond in the bottom half. A single by Mackenzie, followed by an error on a ground ball hit

by Soddy, had the Broncos in a scoring situation. A single by Thomm then loaded the bases with just one out, putting the pressure on Mahon on the mound. Mahon struggled to find the zone as he walked George, allowing the Broncos to score their first run. A wild pitch and a passed ball then allowed two more runs to come in as Orangeville now trailed just 4-3. It would remain a one-run game until the top of the fifth when the Panthers tallied another run. It was Zeal’s aggressive baserunning that al-
lowed the Panthers to extend their lead. After taking a walk, Zeal would move up to second on a passed ball. He then advanced to third on a wild pitch and eventually reached home on a dropped third strike. The savvy baserunning put the Panthers up 5-3. After holding the Broncos scoreless in the bottom half, Le-Win went back to tacking on some important insurance runs in the sixth. Rowen Schulz got the inning started with a leadoff walk. Shortly after, Ayden Packard doubled to right, driving in Le-Win’s
sixth run. An error on the following at bat would allow Le-Win to go up 7-3. Before the inning came to an end, Benson hit a single to the left side, driving in Packard and Drew Streckwald and putting the Panthers up 9-3. Orangeville could not quite find the momentum they had struck earlier in the third inning. After getting within one, the Broncos watched as Le-Win’s lead grew and grew as the game came to an end. Mahon’s pitching was the difference maker as he went six innings with just four hits and two earned runs allowed. Mahon struck out six and walked two during his outing. Wes Offerman came in for a solid inning of relief as he allowed zero hits and walked one in one inning of work. Benson had a big day at the plate, driving in four runs while going one for three. Packard was one for two with one RBI and Zeal was one for three with two runs scored and one RBI. Fye went one for three with two runs scored, one RBI, and two walks, as the Panthers got production from up and down the lineup. Thomm led the way for the Broncos, going two for two with one run scored. Mackenzie was one for four with a run scored on the day, and Kloepping went one for three. The Broncos will continue searching for their first win on Thursday, May 5, when they play host to the Aquin Bulldogs. The Panthers, now 134, will be in action that same night as they travel to face off with the Pearl City Wolves.
