Orangeville Softball takes sectional finals CORRESPONDENT
Last Thursday the Orangeville Lady Broncos traveled to Durand for what would be a neutral playoff site as they faced off with the Eastland Lady Cougars. Each team came in with similar records, both of them being two of the top teams in Northern Illinois, as the Broncos were 25-4 and the Cougars were 24-4. They each went 13-1 in their conference play. The teams had faced off near the end of the regular season back in April. Orangeville took that game by a score of 5-2 in a low scoring affair. They looked to replicate that same outcome in this one. Orangeville did that, and more, as there was no shortage of offense for the Broncos on Thursday. Tessa Janecke did what she does best as she sparked some early momentum with a leadoff double to center field to start the game. With some crafty hitting to follow, Janecke was able to make her way home to give the Broncos an early 1-0 lead. Orangeville would expand their lead in the third inning when they tacked on three more runs to go up 4-0. The Broncos would take complete control of the game with a seven run fourth inning, however. After batting around and driving in run after run, Orangeville found themselves with a comfortable 11-0 lead in the sectional finals. Eastland was eventually able to get on the scoreboard when they took advantage of some defensive errors by the Broncos. Thankfully for Orangeville, they already had the big lead before the mistakes began to happen. The Cougars were able to cut the eleven-run lead down to just seven, as they brought the score to 11-4. Each team would add a run in the fifth inning to push the score to 12-5, and the Cougars brought it within six when they tacked on another run in the sixth inning. The Broncos offensive firepower had not ran out yet, however. Katelyn Boomgarden found herself at the plate in the final inning with an opportunity to tack on some insurance runs, and she would do just that.
With a blast over the left field fence, Boomgarden’s homerun would be the final run of the game and a dagger to the Cougar’s season. The 13-6 victory gave the Broncos their second straight second title, as they accomplished the same feat just last season. Tori Plowman pitched another incredible game for the Broncos, as she put her record to 18-3 as Orangeville collected their twenty-sixth team victory. She allowed just five hits on the day. The Broncos had eleven hits of their own. At the beginning of the season coach Lon Scheuerell discussed the teams goal to win a sectional championship. However, now that they have done that, the goal doesn’t stop there. The team looks to make Orangeville history by being the first girls’ team to head to the state tournament. The Broncos will face off with the Illini Bluffs softball squad for their super sectionals matchup. The game was originally supposed to take place on May 27, but due to some sloppy weather, it was moved back a day to May 28. The Broncos are well aware they will have to clean up their defense in the game, if they want to move on in the tournament.

Madonna Renewal Center to host ‘Blue Nun Fun Run’ The Madonna Renewal Center is hosting the Fourth Annual “Blue Nun Fun Run” on June 1, at the West Block Trail Head of the Jane Addams Trail (Trail Head just north of Freeport off Bypass 20). All proceeds from the event will benefit the renovation of the Madonna Renewal Center. The Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, Mother of Christ, also known as “The Sisters of IHM” or “The Blue Nuns,” were able to open their doors in 2018 due to the many generous donations from individuals and businesses locally and outside of our immediate area. The Madonna Renewal Center is a safe haven for adult pregnant women and their infants. Here, women who face
unplanned motherhood and need support will encounter and embrace a new future. Registrations for the Blue Nun Fun Run are being taken online now at www.bluenuns.org .
