Lady Wolves win Regional Championship VOL. 88 • NO. 22

By Trenten Scheidegger CORRESPONDENT

The Pearl City Wolves’ softball team won the regional championship in blowout fashion with a big win over the Fulton Steamers. After gaining the one seed and having an opening round bye, the Wolves began their postseason run with a tough matchup against the War-

ren-Stockton Warhawks. The regional semi-final game took place on Tuesday, May 17. The Wolves had the benefit of being the home team, giving them the last at bat in what would be a pitcher’s duel. The Wolves gave themselves an early advantage as they took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Brea Musser led the inning off with a sin-

gle to left and was eventually driven in when Cheyenne Handsaker singled up the middle. Despite tallying an early run, offense would be few and far between as the game went scoreless through the next four and a half innings. Fortunately for the Wolves, Handsaker was able to give the Warhawks an even harder time at the plate. Handsaker

was nearly perfect in seven innings of work as she pitched a complete game no-hitter with seventeen strikeouts and just one walk allowed. Handsaker’s pitching made up for the lack of offense and gave Pearl City the edge in the low-scoring affair. In the bottom of the sixth, the Wolves were able to score a pair of runs that made things

more comfortable for Handsaker and the Pearl City defense in the closing moments of the game. The late runs came with some two-out magic as Handsaker singled to left after Musser and Jordan Johnson had hit into outs. It was Brianna Stager who delivered a dagger as she crushed a tworun homerun over the center field fence to put the Wolves up 3-0 with just one inning left to play. Handsaker was dynamite in the final inning as she struck out a pair to start the top of the seventh. She then quickly got a groundball out to secure the 3-0 victory and send the Wolves into the regional championship. Stager’s big hit led the way in the victory as she finished the game going one for three with a pair of runs batted in and one run scored. Handsaker was two for three with one run scored and one RBI, as well. Musser was one for three with a run scored as the Wolves combined for five hits on the day. A few days later, the Wolves were back in action as they faced off with the Fulton Steamers for the regional championship on Friday, May 20. The Wolves made an early statement by jumping out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first. The early rally began with Johnson being hit by a pitch to reach first base. Johnson would eventually score after a pair of wild pitches allowing her to round the bases. A single by Handsaker, followed by a walk to Stager and

an error on a Sidney Wright bunt kept the Wolves in business. Before the inning came to an end, they took advantage of some more sloppy pitching by Fulton as an error, a wild pitch, and another walk would allow the Wolves to bring four runs in. Once the Wolves took the early lead, they didn’t look back. Pearl City came to the plates in the bottom of the fourth holding a 5-0 lead. A leadoff single by Kendra Kuhlemeier sparked another rally as she would eventually score on a Musser groundout. It was another sloppy inning for the Fulton defense as three errors would allow three runs to come in as the Wolves went up 8-0 with just three innings left to play. The Wolves were buoyed by another incredible pitching performance from Handsaker. After throwing the no-hitter earlier in the week, Handsaker brought that same energy to the regional championship. In six innings of work, Handsaker struck out 16 batters while allowing just one hit and one walk. She was also the leader at the plate, going three for four with three RBI and two runs scored. Johnson was one for two with two runs scored and Kuhlemeier was two for two with one run scored and a walk. Despite combining for just six hits as a team, the Wolves took advantage of the Steamer’s mistakes as they held on to win by a score of 10-0 to claim the regional championship.
