Orangeville baseball on a roll this season By Trenten Scheidegger CORRESPONDENT

The Orangeville Broncos varsity baseball squad set out to be one of the best teams in the Northwest Upstate Illini-East Conference, and they have done that so far in 2021. It was a bumpy start, as the team split games against Pearl City and suffered a 9-5 loss to East Dubuque, leaving them with a 2-2 record to start the season. Since then, the team has caught fire, winning four PHOTO SUBMITTED Shopper’s Guide games in a row prior to their May 14 matchup with River Ridge-Scales Mound. In the top of the seventh inning, Galena posted two runs to take a 12-10 lead. Orangeville was just three outs away from blowing their big lead to start the game. Galena’s pitcher would hit two batters to start the inning, however, giving the Broncos just enough hope. Moments later, back-to-back walks loaded the bases and, eventually, walked a run in to cut the Pirate lead to one. Zach Baker then came through with a single to center field, allowing Ryan Guy and Jake Doyle to score for the 13-12 walk-off win. It may not have been the ideal situation for the Broncos and head coach Andrew Janecke, but it was exciting, nonetheless. Baker led the team offensively, going 3-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Both Doyle and Carson Rote finished with two RBIs each.

phase of expanded reopening amid decreasing transmission rates, while first-time unemployment claims increased from the prior week and continued claims dropped. As of May 13, more than 4.6 million Illinoisans — or 36.5 percent of the state’s population — were fully vaccinated, with 10.1 million doses administered statewide. Almost 58 percent of the state’s age 16-and-over population had received at least one dose of the vaccine, according to the Illinois Department of Public Health.
