Lady Wolves win eighth straight By Trenten Scheidegger CORRESPONDENT
The Pearl City Lady Wolves improved their record to 20-5 after beating the Lena-Winslow Panthers in a pair of games that extended Pearl City’s latest winning streak to eight games. While the Wolves entered last week with an overall record of 175, the Panthers came in as the underdogs at 6-11. The Wolves and Panthers first met up on Thursday, May 5, when the Panthers made the trip to face off with Pearl City on the Wolves’ home field. The Wolves were boosted by an excellent pitching performance from Cheyenne Handsaker. The senior threw
a no hitter which included 17 strikeouts and just one walk in the complete game performance. It was Handsaker who gave the Wolves an early lead for her to work with in the pitcher’s circle. After a one out double by Jordan Johnson, Handsaker doubled on a line drive to right field, allowing Johnson to score and putting the Wolves up 1-0. That 1-0 lead would hold until the top of the fourth when the Panthers came to bat. Despite Handsaker tossing a no hitter, a walk and a pair of errors by the Pearl City defense would allow Rachael Setterstrom and Kanzas White to score. After three
and a half innings of play, the Panthers had zero hits but still held a 2-1 lead. The Panthers would not hold the lead for long, however. In the bottom half, a defensive error by Le-Win’s third baseman would allow Handsaker to score, tying the game at 2-2. One inning later the Wolves would jump back into the lead when Handsaker hit her second double of the game. This time the double drove in Brea Musser, putting the Wolves up 3-2. That was the final score change of the game as Handsaker’s pitching kept the Panthers off the bases. Maddy Chiles was also impressive from the pitcher’s circle for
Le-Win. Chiles threw all six innings, allowing just one earned run and striking out five, despite the loss. Handsaker dominated the game for the Wolves. The senior went three for three at the plate with a pair of runs batted in and one run scored, to go along with her no-hit performance as a pitcher. Kendall Dixon was also one for three with one RBI and Johnson was one for three with one run scored. The next day, the Panthers and Wolves were back in action, this time on Lena-Winslow’s home field.
Once again, the Wolves wasted little time jumping out to an early lead. It was Musser who scored the game’s first run as she tripled to left field and an errant throw allowed her to reach home safely. The play gave the Wolves a run before an out had even been recorded in the game. The 1-0 lead would hold until the top of the fourth when the Wolves would expand their lead. After a strike out to start the inning, Handsaker and Brianna Stager would hit back-to-back singles. With two outs, Handsaker would score on a wild pitch. Follow-
ing the run a pair of errors by the Le-Win defense would allow two more runs to come in, giving the Wolves a 4-0 lead. In the top of the fifth the Wolves would take advantage of some more sloppy defense as Musser scored thanks to another errant throw. Trailing by five, the Panthers were running out of opportunities to comeback. Handsaker had another exceptional pitching performance, going all seven innings and allowing just four hits while striking out 10. Handsaker
