School District 202 report YOUR FREE HOMETOWN NEWSPAPER

VOL. 88 • NO. 15

By Christopher Johnson REPORTER

When the student study session intensifies over the next few weeks, so will the environmental factors that dictate the comings and goings across District 202’s fields and facilities. Athletic events are espe-

cially susceptible to external conditions such as wind, rain and heat during the spring learning session. Impact isn’t limited to fields and tracks though. Inside the hallways of the District 202’s structures, the issue of how comfortable the learning environment

is and what can be done for students and staff, got a big boost at a Special Meeting of the Board of Education. During the scheduled February Regular Meeting of the Lena-Winslow Board of Education, a measure was brought to surface regarding weather readiness and the

The Taste of Lena, hosted by the Lena Lions Club, returns this year on June 11, and it’s an event you won’t want to miss. This year’s festivities are sponsored by Quinn Construction, a locally owned family business in town. ident Jason Kempel during the Feb. 22 meeting of District 202 Officials put a pause on the spending for a new cooling system, temporarily. The motion to suspend action was approved through unanimous consensus of Board Members. It was determined that a Special Board Meeting would be held on Monday, Feb. 28 at noon. Less than a week later, the Board of Education re-convened and approached the issue of making the decision on what would be done to get the plans for unit comfort in place, ahead of required need. President Kempel called the session to order at 12:11 pm with all Board Members present, accounted for and ready for discussion on the only item on the Special Board Meeting Agenda. By rule, a Special Board Meeting Agenda can not be modified in the form of additions. Different rules can apply to other regularly scheduled gatherings of elected officials. Many times school districts and municipalities alike make room for a few extra things to talk about on each monthly’s slate for revealed discovery. On Monday afternoon the approval of the limited interaction Agenda was made by Board Member Liz Foley and seconded by Member Dennis Groezinger. The door was open.

There were no guests present as the Board moved things into action mode. Open discussion on the proposal for a new air conditioning unit began. It was known that the choice Board Members would make would not be a simple selection. Too much was involved and too many variables to consider individually. The path towards the acceptance of Nelson Carlson Mechanical Company for services was presented for consideration. The air conditioning system provider reportedly began business over 100 years ago as Nelson Piping Company. After talk and cross talk concluded, a vote was called. It would be a roll call vote since the decision would require the spending of taxpayer dollars. A motion was made by Groezinger and seconded by Foley to approve the bid for air conditioning services from the Rockford area provider. As the count was collected, Foley and Groezinger were joined in the majority by Board Members Jess Schumacher, Pete Conway, Tony Gilbertson and Board President Jason Kempel. Denying the selection was Board Member Dave Shexnayder who was the sole anti-advocate for the selection of the Rockford-area provider.
