Le-Win music embraces new caretakers
By Tabitha Engel Ask any Lena-Winslow alumnus to share a fond musical memory, and chances are good the response will include the name “Stich.” Since the mid-80s, the husband and wife team have dedicated their lives to fostering an appreciation of music in all its vibrant forms for generations of junior high and high school students. Scott Stich served as band director and Lisa Stich as choral director. From summer tours to winter concerts, the Stiches worked year-round with the students of Le-Win music programs. And every spring, they joined with veteran English teacher, Jerilyn “Stro” Strohecker, to bring students of all talents together and present the crown jewel of Lena-Winslow’s fine arts events—the high school musical. While Lisa and Jerilyn oversaw the performances on stage, Scott led the pit band. From Bye Bye Birdie to Music Man, this team guided many Lena area youth through their first experience with live musical theater. Now the door has closed to a beloved era in local musical education and school stage productions, as Lisa Stich was the last of the three to retire in 2018. And another door has opened as two new, talented teachers take on the challenge of ushering LeWin’s music programs into the future. The New Faces of Le-Win Music Programs “My teaching philosophy can be boiled down to the phrase ‘Good Musicians, Better People,’” said Ali Stachowicz. “I want to instill such a love for music and hunger for learning in my students that we continue to grow more toward agency and self-sufficient music learning, and deepen connections to other disciplines like social sciences, language arts, mathematics, and physiology that we can learn from studying music.” It is Ali’s first year as choral director at Lena-Winslow, and she is embracing the role with zeal. It is also Renee Schultz’s first year as band di-
rector. As a former student, the busy mother of two feels at home in LeWin’s hallowed halls. “I am the musician and teacher I am today because of Scott Stich. I love being back in the band room where I spent so much of my time in school and had a great feeling of homecoming this year,” said Renee. The pair will be joining veteran teacher Mary Ellen Modica to bring “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” the Lena-Winslow Fine Arts stage on April 5 & 6 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $3 for students and $5 for adults. Ali promised the musical comedy will deliver “A lot of laughs!” as well as, “Some poignant moments about motivation and growing up. And a lot of passionate, talented kids who have grown into roles that almost seem to be made for them.” Both women acknowledged they have big shoes to fill as they take over the school’s music programs. “Scott and Lisa are very strong members of this community and their impact is lasting. I count myself very lucky to have been welcomed into a program that’s been so established,” said Ali. “One of my goals from the moment I accepted this position has been to join as much as I can of what the choir program was previously to my vision for its future, to make this transition as seamless as possible for the students.”+ As the torch is passed to the new caretakers of Le-Win music, there is also a sense of gratitude. “I see the hard work that has been invested in this program over Scott’s career and I am thankful for the groundwork he set,” said Renee. “I am excited about the way the students have welcomed me and worked hard.” As the Stiches enjoy the wellearned rewards of retirement, they look forward to enjoying LWHS music programs as community members. “Scott and I miss our friends and the students, but we don’t miss the pressure and schedule,” said Lisa.

Le-Win High School presents ‘The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee’ By Tabitha Engel CORRESPONDENT
Lena-Winslow High School is pleased to present “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” on April 5 and 6, in the Fine Arts Center. The musical comedy tells the story of a quirky collection of adolescents competing for top prize at the 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. From timid Olive (played by Krista Keene), who’s best friend is
a dictionary, to overachiever Marcy (played by Alysse Potter) there is no shortage of colorful characters on the spelling bee stage. The audience is sure to root for Leaf (played by Michael Decker), even if his parents always underestimate him. Of course, Leaf doesn’t have the secret weapon of a “magic foot” like William Barfee (played by Boone Durham). But will any of them stand a chance against last year’s champion, Chip (played by Caleb Matz)? Whatever the case, political-
ly aware Logainne (played by Kierra Lynn Schulz) will probably have something to say about it. With music and lyrics by William Finn and a book by Rachel Sheinkin, the 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” is sure to engage and delight audience members! The LWHS stage production is directed by Ali Stachowicz and Mary Ellen Modica, with pit orchestra directed by Renee Schultz. The event begins at 7:30 p.m. and tickets are only $3 for students or $5 for adults.
