Lena-Winslow knocks off Galena in NUIC action By Chris Johnson
Madilyn Schultz had a good game on Tuesday. April 17, as her Lena-Winslow Lady Panthers dispatched the Galena Lady Pirates by a final score of 9-6. She struck out nine batters during her seven-inning stretch and contributed to her own cause as she knocked home one of the runs to help secure the victory. It was a strong pitching performance by both starters in the Tuesday match. Neither team would get anything going until the third inning and that’s where Lena-Winslow struck first. The Lady Panthers put two scores on the board and entered the Galena home half of the third with the slight edge. Galena responded with a run of its own in the third. At the start of the fourth, it was a one-run advantage for the visitors. That changed the following inning. Lena-Winslow put four more runs on the board in the top of the fourth inning and batted through the order as they pushed to a 6-1 lead. The Lady Pirates began chipping away at the deficit as they scored a single tally in the fifth and followed it up with two additional runs in the sixth. At the start of the seventh, it was 6-4 in favor of the Lady Panthers. The offense awoke again for Lena-Winslow. The team put three insurance runs on the board and entered the bottom of the seventh seemingly in control, 9-4. Galena responded with two runs in their last at bats, but couldn’t overcome the five-run deficit they had fallen victim to and lost by the final of 9-6. Madison Scace got on base via the walk twice and scored two runs. Jenna Bidlingmaier was 1-2 with two runs scored and another knocked home. Ashlyn Almasy was credited with three runs knocked home in her 1-4 afternoon. Jordan Streckwald was 1-4 with two runs batted in. The boys’ baseball team also faced off with Galena this past week and split the season series. Michael Jones and Hunter Greene split pitching duties, with each hurler credited with three-plus innings
pitched as the Panthers beat back the Pirates 16-8. As a team, Lena-Winslow collected 17 hits and scored a lot of runs early to help secure the win. Galena scored first. They put two runs on the board in their first bats in their home half and entered the second with a lot of hope. It changed. Lena-Winslow scored five runs in the second and followed it up with four in the third and one additionally in the fourth. The lead had grown to 102, before Galena could respond in the fourth. They scored four times and pulled back to within four runs. The Panthers batted in the fifth and scored three times. They would add another three runs in the seventh inning. Galena scored twice in the bottom of the seventh, which would not nearly be enough. Lena-Winslow captured the day with the double-up effort, 16-8. Galena returned the favor two days later as they played at Lena-Winslow. This time things didn’t go as well for the home Panthers as they fell 10-4. The Pirates scored in each of the first three innings and held the Panthers to just one run through five innings. As Lena-Winslow batted in the bottom of the sixth, they were down 10-1. They scored three times to assure there would be no rules-shortened affair. Galena held on for the 10-4 decision and split of the weekly series.

Pearl City Cub Scouts
The members of Pearl City Pack 27 present Gene Nott, a volunteer with Friends of Scouting, a check for $700. The donation to Friends of Scouting will be used to assist Canyon Camp with fulfilling needs since the damaging flood last year. The Cub Scouts held a short Fudgeraiser (www. Fudgeraiser.com) to raise funds to help the Scout Camp as the some of the scouts, and Pearl City in general know first-hand the effects of flooding, These Scouts knew they had an opportunity to help an organization in need. The Scouts want to thank everyone who made this donation possible with the support of their Fudgeraiser.
Three local teens named Money Smart Kids Three local junior high students were recently awarded cash prizes as winners of the Northwest Illinois Region’s Money Smart Kid Essay Contest, a kick-off event for this year’s Money Smart Week activities. The awards were presented on April 16, at the Freeport Public Library with their parents, families, and teachers in attendance. Taking home first place honors with a $500 award was Payton Scace, an eighth grader at Le-Win Junior High The sponsor of the award was Apple River Bank, of Warren. Second place, and its $250 cash award,
sponsored by Cornerstone Credit Union, of Freeport, was presented to Henry Engel, a seventh grader also from Le-Win Junior High. Coming in with third place was Eliza Walton, an eighth grader at Warren Junior High. Her $100 cash award was sponsored by Exchange State Bank, of Lanark. The essay contest was open to
6-8th graders throughout Stephenson, Jo Daviess, and Carroll Counties as part of 2018 Money Smart Week©, a national and regional collaboration of partners who offer free educational sessions as a way to educate citizens about personal finance.
