Coach Werhane speaks on Panthers’ turnaround, production from lineup By Trenten Scheidegger CORRESPONDENT
The Lena-Winslow Panthers’ baseball squad is back on track after their slow start. After a four-game skid to start the 2022 season, the Panthers bounced back by winning six consecutive games including a 6-2 defeat over an impressive Warren-Stockton team. When asked about the recent turnaround, Le-
na-Winslow Baseball Head Coach Nick Werhane found a silver lining to Mother Nature’s recent weather tantrums. “The biggest thing is we just started hitting the ball a lot better.” Werhane said, explaining “We were really struggling at the beginning of the year with just making contact. We have been focusing a lot on that, each practice. We haven’t been able to go out-

side very much for practice. So really all we have been able to do is focus on hitting in the gym, and I think it has really paid off.” Indoor practices are a common thing for Midwest baseball programs, especially in the early spring. Werhane and the Panthers have found a way to make the most of the situation, and they are getting results. Le-Win knows it takes

more than a few good swings to win games, however. “Our defense, luckily, has been good all year, and our pitching has been pretty consistent as well.” Werhane shared. As for the slow start Werhane believes there is a reasonable explanation. “Us as coaches and the players themselves, we were all as a collective team putting a lot of pressure on each other. To
not strike out, to not fail. We came together as a team and changed some things; our approach, our mindset, and we are just playing a lot more relaxed and a lot looser, over the last few games.” Said Werhane. Specifically, the Le-Win coach mentioned the pressure on this year’s senior class. “This senior group is so talented, and they are such great kids. They have had a pressure on them ever since junior high and pony league baseball to be good.” Werhane shared. The head coach spoke more about the success this 2022 class has experienced, and how it could cloud their mindset ahead of the spring season. “Fortunately, or unfortunately, however you want to look at it, because of their success in football, basketball, and all the sports that they participate in. Add that on top of it being a spring sport, they are seniors, and they are just kids. It is hard, especially at the spring season, to keep that focus and work ethic, and also play relaxed. It’s a tough thing to balance.” Said Werhane. This year’s seniors include Luke Benson, Brody Mahon, Brady Eilders, Maddex Sargent, Zak Krahmer, Ethan Fye, and Mikhail Schoonhove-Hussein. All of which play key roles for the team on and off the field, according to Werhane. “Bro-
dy Mahon has been the team leader, hands down.” Werhane said, explaining, “[Mahon] is so positive at practice, he keeps things loose. He’s our two hitter, he gets on base a ton, and he has scored the most runs out of everyone on the team. So he sets the tone in many ways.” Ethan Fye, despite missing a game due to illness early in the season, is “off to a tremendous start” according to Werhane, who also called Benson and Sargent “so consistent.” Werhane continued to compliment Sargent, saying, “[Sargent] is one of the hardest working kids I have ever coached. He is a great kid, does all of the little things right, and I can’t say enough good things about him as a player. I’m so proud of how he is doing.” On Krahmer, Werhane said, “He doesn’t get a lot of playing time, but he does courtesy run for us a lot, and he is solid on the basepaths. The kids love him, he is such a good kid to have around, and you need kids like that in the program. We as coaches love him too because he never complains, and he does everything we ask him to do.” Werhane also spoke on Schoonhove-Hussein, saying “he is another personality that has been huge in our program. We have kids like that who are just making it fun and that is a big part of it.
