Orangeville welcomes eight area teams to annual tournament REPORTER

Orangeville hosted a softball tournament this past weekend on their home turf. The tournament consisted of eight teams from both Illinois and Wisconsin. Amongst those eight teams were the Orangeville Broncos and the LeWin Panthers. The LeWin Panthers opened up the tournament with a matchup against the Mineral Point Pointers. The Panthers found themselves in a tough spot to start as their original starting pitcher Zoe Johnson had a sore shoulder and they were forced to start sophomore Maya Curtis on the rubber. On the other hand, the Panthers offense struggled to get anything going in their first game. The Pointers pitched nearly a perfect game, allowing zero runs on a no-hitter. If it weren’t for a trio of walks, the Panthers wouldn’t have had a single base runner. They eventually fell by a score of 12-0. In their second game they faced off with Rockford Christian and this time they came out looking like a whole new team on offense and defense. Curtis was on the mound once again, this time going four innings while allowing zero runs off just five hits. The offense finally woke up for the Panthers, as well. Curtis helped herself out a ton with a double and a triple while driving in an impressive seven rbi’s. Maleah Linden hit a homerun in game two and the Panthers were fast on the base paths, stealing a combined six bases in their game. The Panthers went on to win game two by a score of 24-0. After suffering the game one loss the Panthers found themselves in a battle for fifth place for their final game of the tournament. They would face off with the Argyle Warriors. The Panthers once again found themselves in a tough situation as they were forced to play without three starters due to their participation in the high school musical. Zoe Johnson was on the

mound for LeWin. Despite the sore shoulder she pitched all seven innings but allowed seven runs over that time. Johnson struck out seven batters. The Panthers offense once again struggled to find a rhythm as they mustered just one run that came off a hit by Johnson. They eventually fell by a score of 7-1 as they finished in sixth place for the tournament. The Broncos had much more success as they were on their home turf for the day. Orangeville began their day with a matchup against Rockford Christian and they wasted no time getting started. With a fifteen run first and an eleven run second the Broncos found themselves up 26-0 early on. Tessa Janecke had herself a game, going four for five while hitting a grand slam and bringing in eight rbi’s. Emily George went four for four while hitting a grand slam herself and driving in seven rbi’s. Payton Meier was on the rubber and pitched four innings while striking out eight and allowing zero runs as she earned the win. The Broncos walked away from game one with a 30-0 victory. Orangeville would face off with a much tougher opponent in the Mineral Point Pointers for game two. The Broncos would prove to be too much once again, however. Tori Plowman was on the rubber as she pitched six innings, earned seven strikeouts, and allowed four runs while getting the win. Janecke and George led the way offensively as they each homered again. McKayla Riemer also went three for four in game two. The Broncos earned a 10-4 victory and put themselves in a spot to compete for the championship. For the final game they faced off with Wheaton St. Francis in what would be the battle for first place. Wheaton St Francis proved to be too much for the Broncos, however, as they eventually fell by a score of 13-0 and finished the tournament in second place. Orangeville now sits at 6-1 on their season.
