Orangeville offense inundating opposition REPORTER

Very clear facts are starting to surface when conversation turns to the Orangeville Lady Broncos and the 2018 spring sports season. They have been pounding out runs and running away with rules-shortened contests, since taking their first swings in midMarch. The early-season success streak has seen Orangeville outscore their opposition by an impressive 59-13 margin over a three game span. South Beloit was the first team to fall during the stretch. Orangeville did not wait to get the action started. After shutting down the Lady Sobos in the top of the first, the gates opened and the Broncos ran free. They scored six runs in the first inning and then kept things right where they wanted, with two in the second and another run in the third. With the score 9-0, Orangeville finished the job as they plated five in the bottom of the fourth. South Beloit was held to one run and charged with six errors in the 14-0, five-inning decision. Katie Boomgarden was credited with the win. She pitched four innings and allowed one hit. She struck out two and walked none. Boomgardent also helped on the offensive side. She was two-for-three with a double in the mix. McKayla Riemer was 2-2. The scoring totals reached new levels a night later as the Pecatonica Lady Indians came in for the first of two games. Orangeville won game one of the rescheduled double header 17-6. Orangeville was supposed to play an away-and-home series with Pecatonica, beginning March 20, but inclement weather conditions and temperatures below the 40-degree mark led to a delay. Both games were played at Orangeville on Thursday and it was a good thing for the Lady Broncos. They powered past the Lady Indians in the opener and then completed the sweep with an 11-1 win in the nightcap. Offense began showing up right off the bat, in the opening frame in the sec-

ond win on Thursday. The Lady Broncos put three runs on the board in each of the first two innings and then added four additionally in the third. Pecatonica could only respond with one run of its own and that came in the bottom of the first. A final tally in the fourth frame, followed by a shut-down of the Lady Indians attack led to the ten-run rule going into effect and the five-inning victory for Orangeville by a final score of 11-1. The Easter break is upon Orangeville this week with a bit of a scheduling reprieve about to be enjoyed. Action continues within the NUIC on Tuesday, April 3, with a scheduled match at Saelens Park against the Durand Lady Bulldogs. They will face Durand again two days later at home and in between will have to deal with the Eastland Lady Cougars. Matches against Amboy and Dakota are scheduled to be played beginning April 10 before the Lady Broncos head north of the border for a meeting with Monroe.

Weather impacting Lena-Winslow’s early outdoor games By Chris Johnson REPORTER

It takes a special commitment by a student to make the decision to go out for spring sports. Given the fairly unpredictable spring weather patterns, it takes a lot of discipline and patience too. For athletes running track and field at Lena-Winslow High School, that means they don’t’ always get the chance to get into “early-season” form, during the early season. The weather just doesn’t allow it. That is expected to change very soon, however. The 2018 spring sports season began about two weeks ago and one of the first activities scheduled to feel the feet of competition was track and field. The Panthers opening schedule featured a multi-team meet at Byron High School on Tuesday, March 13. It made it to 36 degrees that day. A week later, things still hadn’t im-

proved enough to allow the games to commence. The girls’ track and field meet at Galena was canceled due to unplayable weather conditions. It was a few degrees warmer that day. It made it to 39, still too cold to run. On Thursday, March 22 a redo was offered with Galena again asked to play host. This Wednesday, March 28, the girls’ team is expected to take to the track as they play in Milledgeville, with the first events slated to begin at 4 p.m. The Easter Holiday steps in this weekend and the games will be put on pause, until they resume in Milled-

geville on the other side of the break. The boys’ team will take its shot at the Missiles. The Lady Panthers will be home on Tuesday, April 3. It will be the first time they get the chance to perform in a much more comfortable environment. The early forecast for the after-Easter action appears to have an optimistic feel. It should be a good day to run as temperatures are expected to climb to more normal levels, into the 50’s. That is expected to help put the runners and throwers in a better position, to succeed on the field. The games continue on Thursday,

April 5, as the girls’ team will take the 40-minute trip east to Pecatonica. The boys’ team will participate in a meet against Galena-River Ridge on the road, the same day, before they get set for a Saturday meet at Oregon on April 7. Both the boys’ and girls’ teams will be in action on Monday, April 9, as they host a triangular with the West Carroll Thunder and the Dakota Indians. It will be the first time both teams compete at the same location this season, but it won’t be the last. They will
