The local basketball squads have finished up their 2018-19 season and will look to focus on their future near the end of 2019. The Orangeville Broncos had a bit of a roller coaster ride for a season, but they finished strong and will have a lot to look forward to in the 2019-20 season. Head coach Jesse Stamm correctly predicted a slow start to their season but said that once everyone settled into their roles they would compete in every game. The Broncos did just that. After beginning their season with an 0-5 record, a “slow start” may have been putting it gently. The Broncos then suffered what would be an eight game losing streak in the middle of their season, as they were still looking to build their chemistry and settle in. Nearing the end of their season, Orangeville found themselves with a 2-15 record. Although it was a bit too late to improve in conference standings, they did eventually settle in and began to not only compete, but to win games. They finished their season with an impressive 5-2 record and appeared to be a whole new squad to end the year. Despite suffering a loss in the regional opener, Orangeville only graduates two seniors in Noah Ashe and Brett Scott. Stamm, who will be entering his fourth year as head coach, will look to build off the success at the end of last season with his more experienced squad in the 2019-20 season. The LeWin Panthers had themselves yet another successful season. Capturing their second twenty-win season in a row, the Panthers finished their regular season with a 22-8 overall record while going 9-4 in conference play. LeWin was stuck with a tough matchup in the regional opener as they had to face
the one seed in East Dubuque. East Dubuque also took home the conference title and had defeated LeWin earlier in the regular season. Despite losing that game the Panthers are built to make a run at another twenty-win season during the 201920 quest. They lose two star players in Parker Magee and Cade Benson, but the roster is loaded with younger, experienced guys who will look to continue the Panthers’ success in coach Benson’s eighth season. Sean Ormiston will look to lead the way in his senior year. Freshman Luke Benson, coach Benson’s son who showed flashes all season long, will look to further develop his game and become an offensive leader in his sophomore season. The Pearl City boys completed what would be a very successful season for the Wolves. With an eight game win streak coming mid-season, the wolves finished their season with an 18-9 overall record while going 10-3 in conference play. That record was enough to earn them a second place finish in the Northwest Upstate Illini-West Conference. The Wolves will struggle to replace this year’s squad as they graduate a tremendous group of eight seniors, nearly their entire varsity roster. Collyn Kuberski, Braden and Brock Smargiassi, Jayden and Jarod Kempel, Kade Knoup, Lucas Petersen, and Drake Musser are all a part of a highly talented class of 2019. Coach Sean Downey will have to find a way to fill each one of these voids next season, as he deals with a much more inexperienced roster. As with every year, each team will have roles and voids to fill, some more than others. Some will look to find their way back to success, while others look to continue what they have built. That’s the beauty of high school sports.
