Pearl City takes first swings into new season SPORTS CORRESPONDENT
With winter weather returning to the area to open the “official” first week of the spring sports season, things had to be reconsidered as starting times and first pitches faced delays. The three-time defending Regional and 2015-2016 Sectional Champion Pearl City Lady Wolves, if weather-conditions required, got a little more time to think about how well things turned out last season. The Lady Wolves have a lot to be proud of and a lot to hold onto as they enter play this spring. They defeated Lena-Winslow to win the Class 1A Pecatonica Girls’ Sectional Title to close last year’s spring sports season. Now they look at a roster that has a lot of offensive weapons in place to help them open the new season. Game play was scheduled to begin on Monday, March 13 against Aquin. The start time coincided with a scheduled boys’ match between Pearl City and Aquin. A match against Freeport was also scheduled to open this week of play. The Wednesday, March 15 first pitch was slated for send-off at 4:30 p.m. Pearl City is expected to be strong this season on the softball diamond. They know they are going to have the capacity to score a lot of runs and now that opportunity is supported by a lot more confidence. It’s difficult to enter a new season as a defending Sectional Champion and not feel a sense of “duty” to live up to it…and perhaps try to do even more, this time. A bigger parade would be waiting and sometimes athletes just know it. The Lady Wolves closed the 20152016 season with a 28-4 record. The season before, with Head Coach Mark Melville, Pearl City was 24-3 and had successfully defended its Regional Title that it earned with Melville, following a 19-6, 20132014 softball season. Heading into last season’s Class 1A Sectional Final against Le-
na-Winslow, Pearl City had already secured its third consecutive Regional Title and “had a feeling”, according to recalled comments from Melville, that they “truly had a chance for even more success.” It came to be for the Lady Wolves. Kendra Melville pitched strong late and collected the “needed” strikeouts to help get the best of Lena-Winslow. The win in Pecatonica helped the Lady Wolves capture their first ever Class 1A Sectional Crown. Pearl City is scheduled to host Pecatonica, weather permitting, to return the favor, on Thursday, March 16. Following the Thursday meeting with the Lady Indians, the Lady Wolves look to get a slight respite before they head out on the road and into NUIC-play, beginning Saturday, March 18 in a junior-varsity, varsity double-header at Polo. The road trip continues on Tuesday, March 21 as an attempt to silence the Lady Thunder is made in Savanna. A night later Pearl City closes its journey in Milledgeville. Pearl City is scheduled to face down one of the many tough challenges they will have to realize this season Saturday, March 25, as they travel to play Rockford East.
