After a slow start to their 2021-2022 season, the Lena-Winslow girls basketball squad went on a four-game winning streak, including a victory by forfeit. It was a nice turnaround for Dennis Huttenlocher’s squad after dropping the first two games of the season to Rockford Christian and Amboy.

The Lady Panthers returned a pair of starters from the 9-6 squad from the alternate spring season, earlier in 2021. Senior Kalli Humphrey is back off an honorable mention season and sophomore Grace Groezinger leads the way as a Second Team All-Conference player. The Panthers had a third player with starting experience in senior Cierra Mapes, however, she did not play in the alternate spring season. With twelve players on the roster, Huttenlocher’s squad has a fair amount of depth to go along with their experience.

That experience paid off in a November 30 matchup against a familiar Stockton Blackhawks squad. The Panthers came into the game riding high as they were fresh off back-to-back wins against West Carroll and Warren. The Panthers got off to a hot start against Stockton as Mapes and Camdyn Huttenlocher hit a pair of three-pointers, giving Le-Win a 12-5 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Mapes took over in the second quarter as she put up eight points, including shooting four for four at the free throw line. Groezinger added five second quarter points of her own as the Panthers went into the halftime break up 28-22.

Le-Win would extend their lead by one point in the third quarter as they outscored Stockton 16-15.

Another pair of threes from Camdyn and Mapes helped boost the squad, while Groezinger posted another six points. Stockton hit a pair of third quarter three-pointers of their own,

however, the Panthers would take a 44-37 lead into the final quarter.

It was Humphrey who had the hot hand in the fourth quarter. After being held to just six points in the first three quarters, Humphrey posted seven points in the fourth quarter alone.

Groezinger added another four points and a crucial pair of free throws

by Mapes was enough to put the Panthers over the Blackhawks 58-45.

Groezinger led the squad with seventeen points. Mapes was close behind with fifteen and Humphrey was the third Panther to reach double digits as she dropped thirteen points.

Le-Win did a lot of damage at the free throw line, where they shot nine of fourteen as a team.

Despite dropping the following game against Byron, the Lady Panthers were back in the win column on Tuesday, December 7. It was a home conference matchup against a struggling Durand Bulldogs team.

The Panthers had little trouble handling the Bulldogs for their fifth win of the season. Le-Win relied on a huge first quarter where they outscored the Bulldogs 23-6.

The Panther offense hit a few speed bumps in the second quarter, but they still took a 30-10 lead into the halftime break.

Coming out of halftime, Le-Win had another big quarter as they put up twenty points in the third. With a solid lead, Dennis was able to let his squad coast to a 58-18 victory over Durand.

Groezinger led the team in scoring as she totaled sixteen points. Mapes was the next leading scorer with thirteen points. Tianna Esser had an impressive shooting day as she nailed a trio of three-pointers and finished the game with twelve points.

The 6-4 Panthers will be back in action on Tuesday, December 21, when they play host to Winnebago.

Good pension news in Illinois doesn’t alleviate the underlying financial pressures, new report states 20 percent investment returns drive major reduction in unfunded liabilities

The state saw its unfunded pension liability decrease in fiscal year 2021 for the first time in four years, due in large part to investment returns exceeding 20 percent, according to a new report from the Commission on Government Forecasting and Accountability.

Measuring by the current-day values of the pension fund assets, unfunded liabilities—or the amount of debt the state pension funds owe that they can’t afford to pay— dropped by nearly 10 percent, to $130 billion in FY 2021 from $144 billion in the previous fiscal year. That put the state’s five pension funds at 46.5 percent funded, up from 39 percent the previous year.

It’s the best funding ratio since 2008 and only the third decrease to unfunded liabilities in the last 15 years, the last occurring in FY 2017 at 0.5 percent, the other in FY 2011 at 2.9 percent. Otherwise, unfunded liabilities have risen annually from $42.2 billion in 2007.

But the report also noted that not much has changed to alleviate the underlying financial pressures that have caused unfunded liabilities to triple since the financial crisis of 2007-2008, meaning the good financial news was more anomaly than trend.

The returns of 22.9-25.2 percent for FY 2021, which ended June 30, far exceeded the anticipated 6.5 percent to

7 percent returns, according to the report.

Aside from the good investment news, the report was substantially similar to countless other pension reports in recent years, particularly because it once again called on the state to revamp the much-maligned 1994 “Edgar Ramp” plan for paying down pension debt.

That’s the name commonly used to refer to Public Act 880593, or the state’s 50-year plan to bring the its five pension funds to 90 percent funded by 2045.

The actual target for that ramp should be a 100 percent-funded pension system within the next 25 years or preferably sooner, according to a letter attached to the COGFA report from its actuary, Segal Consulting.

The letter also faulted the Edgar Ramp for “backloading” pension payments, providing for smaller contributions in the early years leading to the current reality which sees 20 percent of the state’s discretionary spending going to pension payments each year. It also highlighted other times the pension system was shortchanged, including during the tenure of former Gov. Rod Blagojevich.

Only after the target is increased to 100 percent, the report noted, would the state begin to see sustained reductions to its unfunded pension liabilities. “(T)he funding plan under (Public Act) 88-0593 produc-

es employer (State) contributions that are actuarially insufficient, meaning if all other actuarial assumptions are met, unfunded liabilities will still increase due to the State contributing an amount that is not sufficient to stop the growth in the unfunded liability,” according to the report.

But increasing pension payments is easier said than done, Alexis Sturm, director of the Governor’s Office of Management and Budget, said in a letter accompanying the report.

She was unavailable for a phone call Thursday, but her letter to COGFA’s co-chairs said consideration of changes to the current 90 percent target “needs to be reviewed carefully within the context of the impact on the state’s budget.”

The $8.6 billion pension payment in FY 2021 was 20 percent of the state’s $42.9 billion General Revenue

Fund budget, and pensions are routinely the state’s largest GRF expense outside of K-12 education. In fiscal year 2022, COGFA estimated the GRF payment at $9.4 billion, or over 21 percent of the operating budget.

FY 2023’s Edgar Ramp-mandated GRF payment is estimated at more than $9.6 billion, or nearly $10.8 billion including other state funds.

But, according to the report, if the state wants to contribute at a rate approved by actuaries, it will need to contribute nearly $14.9 billion in FY 2023, which begins July 1, or 38 percent higher than what is provided for via the Edgar Ramp.

“An increase to the goal would result in higher payments, but eventually lead to a reduction in the unfunded liabilities in the systems,” Sturm wrote. “Given the current fiscal pressures facing the state,

this too is inadvisable to consider until Illinois can eliminate the unpaid bill backlog, borrowings undertaken to pay off the debts remaining from the budget impasse and the COVID-driven recession and address the underlying structural deficit.”

The backlog currently sits at about $4.8 billion, according to the website maintained

by Illinois Comptroller Susana Mendoza, who said in a public appearance this week that the oldest unpaid voucher was 21 days old.

Still, the 90 percent goal, Sturm said, is “reasonable and achievable,” given the circumstances. Gov. JB Pritzker’s administration has fully funded the pension system at Edgar Ramp levels in each of his first three years, although he briefly considered lowering the payment in his first year before quickly dropping the plan.

In their letter to COG-

FA’s director, leaders at the state’s “big three” pension funds—the State Universities Retirement System, State Employees’ Retirement System and Teachers’ Retirement System—all also endorsed the 100 percent funding target and shorter ramps to full funding.

“Earlier funding, in addition to a targeted funding ratio of 100 percent, would make the retirement systems more secure and would substantially reduce financing costs due to interest accruing on the unfunded liability, the primary driver of the state contribution requirements,” the leaders of the pension systems wrote.

The report also noted that a pension buyout program initiated in 2018 and extended for three years by the General Assembly under Pritzker created a $213 million reduction in unfunded liability for FY 2021.

Renewable energy workshop provides answers to solar and wind questions With the recent surge of renewable energy projects being built in the surrounding area, questions, concerns and even misconceptions have spurred the interest of many residents.

University of Illinois Extension Natural Resources, Environment and Energy Educator Jay Solomon responded to many of these during the Solar and Wind Renewable Energy Workshop in Freeport at the end of November.

Solar panels can be seen on homes, businesses and cropping up on farm fields. Solomon discussed everything from terminology to home energy plans and even community projects as well as large utility-scale developments. “Most of the attend-

ees wanted to know about residential and community-scale solar projects,” explains Solomon. “Both of these are ways for individuals to get involved and benefit from renewable energy sources—especially solar right now.”

Residential wind and solar projects are designed to offset the energy used in a home. “It’s behind the meter and you get the full benefit of the energy generated,” notes Solomon. “However, you are limited to where you can put it and you’re responsible for the maintenance of it.”

This energy produced is rated in kilowatt output, 120/240 volt.

Usually, these energy plans are designed to supply 50% to 90% of the energy used. Solo-

mon also pointed out various tax credits and other incentives available to Illinois residents if they choose to go this route with renewable energy.

Utility scale solar farms are developer-owned, and the land is often leased for a select number of years. These farms are high voltage and have a megawatt output, because of this, they are recognized as a power plant and will have a power purchase agreement between the developer and the energy company. According to Solomon, key local benefits with these larger solar farms are the local tax revenue benefits as well as the lease payment options.

Community Solar Gardens are usually developer owned, but they tend to distribute power locally to consumers who are buying a portion of their power-output. These gardens are higher voltage than your typical residential setting, producing kilowatts to low megawatts power output. Local consumers receive credits on their utility bills, but do not have panels on their property or have responsibility for maintenance.

“The Future Energy Jobs Act has contributed to the uptick in community solar gardens throughout the state of Illinois along with the declining costs of solar panels and installation,” comments Solomon.

Wind projects are less defined in Illinois. Solomon adds that

there are successful examples in other states and that there are possible options available to use wind as a renewable energy in Illinois.

“From an environmental point of view, we also need to think about what’s underneath these larger solar systems,” says Solomon. “Planting a native prairie conducive to pollinators can be economically and ecologically beneficial. Another option is planting native forages to graze sheep—which in turn, helps to control the growth of grass versus conventional mowing throughout the growing season.”

“Regardless of your decision on using renewable energy, you need to first consider energy efficiency of your home,” advises Solomon. “The cheapest energy is the energy you never have to use or have to buy.” Solomon recommends doing a home energy audit prior to looking at renewable energy options. ALTON OWENS Alton F. Owens age 91, passed away on Friday Dec. 10, 2021, at the Lena Living Center. He was born on June 22, 1930, in Cazenovia, NY to Clinton and Amelia (Sandberg) Owens. He married Dorothy A. Scott on October 15, 1955, in Big Rock, IL. He was a member of the Lena United Methodist Church. He enjoyed gardening and sharing all the vegetables with his neighbors. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He was always doing things for others. He worked in Rockford for several years, as well as the town of Winslow where he was referred to the “Town

Marshall”.

He also spent his time as a courier for the local area banks.

He is survived by his wife Dorothy; 3 daughters- Patti (Jim) Gantt of Winter Springs, FL, Diane (Brad) Kempel of Lena, IL, and Susan (Steve) Bootz of Montgomery, IL; 7 grandchildren- Jason (Jennifer) Kempel of Winslow, Bethany (Teag) Haughan of Tempe AZ, Megan (Stuart) Slyter of Winter Springs FL, Jared Gantt of Jacksonville, FL, Alyssa Gantt (Justin) of Gilbert AZ, Steven Bootz Jr.

of Montgomery, IL, Kaylee Bootz of Montgomery IL; 5 great grandchildren- Owen Kempel, Emma Kempel, Luke Kempel, Liam Haughan, Ava Haughan; 2 sistersMuriel Everets and May Stout.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Robert Owens and his sister Carol Marsh.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

A memorial has been established for the Big Brother Big Sisters of Monroe WI, and the Lena Winslow Schools as education was very important to him.

CHAD CHARNAS Chad Charnas, 48, passed away Wednesday morning, Dec. 1, 2021 in Austin, Texas.

Chad Christopher Charnas was born March 27, 1973 in Chicago to Carol (Wozniak) and George Charnas. He married Melanie McGivney of Stockton. on May 4, 1996.

He is survived by his wife, Melanie, of 25 years, his son Jalen and daughter Aly of Austin Texas, his mother Carol Charnas, of Dubuque Iowa, his father George Charnas of Benton Wis., and his sister Kathy (Jimmy) Armbrecht of Dubuque Iowa.

Chad is preceded in death by his grandparents and his sister Dena Charnas.

A 1991 graduate of Scales

Mound High School, Chad lived much of his life in the Scales Mound and Rock Falls, IL. area while he owned and operated five Culver’s restaurants in Northern Illinois and Iowa. In recent years he was involved in managing various projects around Austin, volunteering at the food pantry, and spending time with his family, including supporting his son, a junior at Texas A&M University and watching his daughter perform on her dance team as a senior at Vista Ridge High

School.

Chad was known for his sense of humor, as well as his warm heart and giving nature. He enjoyed watching sports, writing and filmmaking, traveling and deep-sea fishing. He will always be cherished for bringing joy and laughter to those he loved and inspiring those he met. Most might remember Chad as a quick-witted gentle soul. He will always be in our hearts.

Visitation will be held on Monday Dec. 13 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. with funeral services on Tuesday Dec. 14 at 11 a.m.

All services will be held at Holy Cross Catholic Church, Stockton Ill. Condolences may be shared at www.hermannfuneralhome.com.

RAYMOND WOLTER Raymond Wolter, age 55, of Hanover, IL, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 8, at FHN Hospital in Freeport, IL. Raymond was born on Aug. 12, 1966, the youngest of three boys, to parents William and Irene (Mussman) Wolter. He grew up in Hanover and attended Hanover High School. Raymond was the last graduate of Hanover High School, receiving the schools last diploma in 1985.

After high school Raymond ran Raymond’s Grocery Store and Raymond’s Pizza Parlor in Hanover, before moving to Florida where he began working for Disney World.

It was around this time that Raymond would strike up a relationship with the love of his life, Kristy Schoenhaar.

From Florida Raymond wrote Kristy many letters. On a trip back to Hanover Raymond took Kristy on a date, and the rest is history. Raymond proposed to Kristy on a Disney cruise in 1999. The couple would marry the following year. Together, Raymond and Kristy raised one son and celebrated 21 years of marriage.

Raymond had the ability to light up a room. He loved to chat with just about anyone,

and always had a witty remark or a wise crack.

He was an active member of his community.

Raymond was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Friends of Wappello, JDCF, and the Jo Daviess County Radio Patrol.

Maybe most notably though, Raymond was Leo the Duck at Mallard Fest for many years. Raymond was an avid Cubs and Hawkeyes fan and attended many games.

At the center of Raymond’s life was his family and his faith. Raymond loved being a father and spent many hours Bee Keeping with his son Riley. Raymond and Riley were big skiers and bonded over the slopes at Chestnut Mountain. Raymond was an active part of his church, and a lifelong member of St John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Hanover.

Raymond will be dearly missed by his loving wife Kristy Wolter of Hanover; his son, Riley Wolter of Hanover; his mother, Irene Wolter of Hanover; two brothers, Frank

(Denise) Wolter of Hanover, and Robert (Jodi) Wolter of Orlando; a brother-in-law, Jeff (Shellie) Schoenhaar of Hanover and a sister-in-law, Karen Andersen of Hanover; his parent-in-laws, Carl and Marianne Schoenhaar of Hanover; seven nieces and nephews, Chris (Isabelle) Wolter, Bruce (Beth) Wolter, Kim (Jason) Wolter, Ashley (DJ) Wearmouth, Alexis (Austin) Andersen, Jarrett Schoenhaar, and Keagan Schoenhaar; several Aunts, Uncles, and Cousins; and many close family friends. Raymond is proceeded in death by his father, William, Aunt Patricia, Uncle Leo, Aunt Janis, and his sister-in-law, Sara.

Funeral service will be held Saturday, Dec. 18, at St John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Hanover at 11 a.m..

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 17, and from 10 a.m. to 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 18 at the Law Jones Funeral Home in Hanover. A memorial fund has been established.

CHARLES ROY DAWSON Charles “Chuck” Roy Dawson, age 59 of Warren, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2021, at the Froedtert Hospital in Milwaukee, WI. He was born Sept. 22, 1962, in Freeport, the son of Donald and June (Downs) Dawson. He graduated with the Class of 1981 from Warren High School.

He went on to marry Jeannie Huber on July 18, 1986 in Galena, IL. He had a lifelong passion for tractor pulling and farming. He also spent endless hours in the garage tinkering with Billy. Chuck worked for Kenny Williams Farms for over 20 years. Since 2015 he

has worked for Horsfield Construction Inc, of Epworth, IA. Charles is survived by his wife Jeannie of Warren; son Logan Dawson of Warren; daughter Lynnea (Calvin) Gahm of Warren; granddaughter Emma Gahm; brothers Dennis (Vicki) and Steve (Jackie) both of Warren; nieces and nephews- Celeste (Barry) Hodge, Corky (Jennifer) Dawson, Dylan Dawson, Alicia (Dusty) Sigafus, Andy

Dawson; and numerous cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 17, 2021, at the Bartell Leamon Funeral Home in Warren. Funeral Services will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 18, 2021, at the United Methodist Church in Warren.

Officiating will be Pastor Roger Bronkema. Interment will take place at Elmwood Cemetery. A memorial has been established in his name.

Several students from the Lena-Winslow band and choir were recently chosen to participate and perform at the ILMEA District 8 Festival ensembles. According to

school officials, this is quite the honor as students must audition and be selected to participate.

Lena-Winslow music students perform at the district festival Fifteen Lena-Winslow band and choir members were selected for the ILMEA District 8 Festival ensembles. Student selection was based on a rigorous virtual audition containing various musical scales, triads, songs, and etudes. The district festival was held at DeKalb High School on Nov. 20. Students were able to share their performances with a limited audience and experience the joy

of making music with other talented students from Northern Illinois.

Representing Lena-Winslow Junior High in the junior ensembles were Adaliz Ortega, Addison Ackerman, Tori Davis, Evie Karnatz, and Adelynn Anderson.

Lena-Winslow High School participants were Cheyanna Kerr, Cienna Kerr, Madi Schierloh, Michael Decker, Braden Jacobs, Chloe Renter,

and Payton Scace. The Lena-Winslow Music Department is very proud of these music students for advancing their musicianship through dedicated practice to attain this honor.

In addition to the achievement of performing at the district festival, Michael Decker

and Chloe Renter have been selected for ILMEA All-State in Peoria this upcoming January. All-State gathers the finest student musicians in Illinois for rehearsal and a culminating performance.

Peril at the top of Illinois GOP ticket

Candidates for one elective office can affect the outcomes for others on the same party ticket.

For example, an unattractive or goofy candidate at the top of the ticket can depress turnout of the party faithful, thus depriving all candidates down the ballot of their votes. That is what scares the dickens out of Illinois Republican Party leaders, who appear thus far impotent to do anything about such possibilities.

At the top of the 2022 ballot in Illinois is the office of U.S. senator, held by Democrat Tammy Duckworth, who seeks re-election. As I have written elsewhere, who would want to run against an unobjectionable woman who had her legs blown off while piloting an Army helicopter in Iraq,

defending her country?

I have not heard of any credible types who are willing, most likely, to fall on their swords in a race against Sen. Duckworth. This increases the chances that a nut case could file petitions and become the GOP nominee. It has happened before. In 1986, Illinois Democrats nominated two unknown radicals with good ballot names (Janice Hart and Mark Fairchild) to the state ticket, which assured the defeat of former U.S. Senator Adlai Stevenson in his bid for

governor.

Next on the ballot is governor. The incumbent JB Pritzker has more money than Croesus, and is willing to spend it to be reelected.

At this time, there are four GOP candidates: • Darren Bailey, a folksy, very conservative downstate, anti-vax lawmaker who has the passionate support of the important home school and Christian school network, probably more effective than any GOP network.

• Successful, suburban businessman Gary Rabine (last name pronounced with two “long” vowels), a Trump supporter.

• Paul Schimpf, a retired Marine JAG officer and former state senator from the Metro East St. Louis region, and • Jesse Sullivan, a 35-year-

old, telegenic All-American sort who has made some money in the Silicon Valley, yet trumpets his roots, home and family in picturesque rural Petersburg.

At present, Bailey appears far ahead of the other three, yet the primary isn’t until late

June. I see quite a few Bailey yard signs in my travels around central Illinois. Yard signs spread across downstate are a decent indicator of a strong network of supporters, good organization, and the potential to raise some money.

My insider lobbyist,

legislator and political junkie friends say the only type who has a chance against Pritzker is one who can appeal to women in the suburbs. In 2018, the 6½ suburban counties around Chicago cast a total of 2.1

From Lena’s Kitchen Cranberry Sauce with Bourbon and Orange

The not so skinny cook

It is hard to believe we are less than two weeks until Christmas. Most of the decorations are up and presents are bought. I know people have already had Christmas because people are leaving to go South. If you are still here and cooking, there are some good holiday recipes this week.

Hot Seafood Spread

Sausage-Stuffed Acorn Squash

You can use this as a main dinner entrée or as a side dish.

The melding of the sausage and apples along with the tartness of the cranberries makes for a great flavor.

2 acorn squash, about 1½ lbs. each, halved pole to pole and seeded ¾ t. salt ½ t. pepper 8 oz. sweet Italian sausage, casings removed 1 Granny Smith apple, cored and chopped 1 small onion, chopped 4 T. unsalted butter, melted and divided 1 T. finely chopped fresh sage or ½ t. dried sage 1 C. chicken broth 1/3 C. dried cranberries

1½ lbs round steak 1 large onion, diced ½ cup celery, diced ½ cup instant rice 1 can chicken and rice soup 1 can cream of mushroom soup 14 oz. can mushrooms 1 can of water Brown steak, celery, and onion in a small amount of olive oil. Pour into a 2 qt. casserole which has been sprayed with cooking spray. Add rice, soup, mushrooms, and water.

Blend ingredients; bake at 350 for 1½ hours. Serve it with a tossed salad, rolls, and you are home free. This casserole makes about six servings.

This tasty bread is a great holiday gift. I think you could put it into two small loaf pans also. Enjoy this unique cranberry and raison bread.

2 C. flour ¾ C. sugar 1½ t. baking powder 1 t. salt ½ t. baking soda ¼ C. cold butter, cubed 1 egg, room temperature ¾ C. orange juice 2 t. grated orange zest 1 C. fresh or frozen cranberries ½ C. golden raisins

If you are looking for a really pretty appetizer, try this seafood spread. I used a loaf of Hawaiian bread for the round loaf. I think you could use the tiny salad shrimp that are frozen instead of the canned shrimp (be sure you dethaw them and remove the tails if they are on the shrimp0. Enjoy this appetizer for the holidays.

1 pkg. (8 oz.) cream cheese, softened 2 C. shredded mozzarella cheese 1 C. mayonnaise 1 can tiny shrimp, drained and rinsed ¾ C. imitation crab meat, chopped ½ C. chopped onion or green onion ¼ C. grated Parmesan cheese 1 t. dill weed 2 t. minced parsley 1 round loaf unsliced bread Combine the cream cheese, mozzarella, mayo, shrimp, crab, onion, Parmesan, dill, and parsley in a bowl and mix completely.

Cut top fourth off from the loaf of bread and carefully hollow out the bottom, leaving ½ inch shell. Put removed bread in a separate bowl or basket and set aside.

Place bread on a baking sheet; fill bread with seafood mixture. Bake at 350 for 25 to 35 minutes until crust is golden brown.

Tired of plain old cranberry sauce? Try this one that has the kick of bourbon added to it. It will make you forget about the old recipe!

2 C. sugar ½ C. bourbon 2 cinnamon sticks 2 large coins peeled fresh ginger Zest of 1 orange, plus juice of 4 oranges 1 lb. (4 C.) cranberries, thawed if frozen 1 t. vanilla Combine the sugar and bourbon in a 1-qt. saucepan, stirring well. Add the cinnamon sticks, ginger, orange zest, and orange juice. Bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring to dissolve the sugar.

Reduce the heat to medium low and simmer until the liquid begins to reduce, about 5 to 7 minutes. Add the cranberries and vanilla to the pan and continue to simmer until the cranberries are soft and breaking apart and the sauce begins to thicken, 12 to 15 minutes. Mash the cranberries with a potato masher to break them up; simmer 5 more minutes.

Remove the pan from the heat and discard the cinnamon sticks and ginger pieces. Let the sauce cool. Serve warm or at room temperature or refrigerate up to 10 days.

Preheat the oven to 350.

Line 2 baking sheets with Cookies parchment paper. For the ½ C. semisweet chocolate cookies: Put the chocolate chips chips in a microwave-safe 1½ C. flour bowl and microwave at 50% ¼ C. unsweetened cocoa power in 15 second intervals, powder stirring between each, until 1 t. baking powder

melted and smooth. Let cool slightly.

In a separate bowl, combine the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda and salt; whisk together. Combine the butter, sugar, and brown sugar in a large bowl and beat with a mixer on medium high heat until smooth and light, about 2 minutes. Add the egg, vanilla, and melted chocolate and beat until well combined, about 30 seconds. With the mixer on low speed, beat in half of the flour mixture, then the buttermilk, then the remaining flour mixture until smooth. Mix in the pecans.

Drop heaping tablespoonfuls of dough on the baking sheets about 2 inches apart.

Bake, rotating the pans halfway through, until the tops of the cookies are puffed and the edges are set, 10 minutes (Don’t over bake; you want the centers to stay fudgy.) Let cool 5 minutes on the baking rack set over a separate parchment-lined sheet.

Glaze: melt the butter in a small saucepan. Remove from the heat and whisk in the milk, cocoa powder, and vanilla until smooth. Add the powdered sugar and whisk vigorously until smooth.

Combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and baking soda in a large bowl and add butter until crumbly. In a small bowl, whisk the egg, orange juice and zest. Stir into dry ingredients until they are moistened. Fold in cranberries and raisins. Transfer to a greased 8 x 4 loaf pan.

million votes; those in the 95 counties “downstate” cast 1.5 million. Surveys report that college-educated women, though not enthusiastic about abortion, strongly oppose (around 75 percent; various polls) overturning Roe v Wade, as a women’s rights issue. The four GOP aspirants are all pro-life.

And then there is the matter of money to go up against “Croesus,” who spent $175 million of his own moolah to win the top state office in 2018. The state GOP lacks two nickels to rub together.

So, all political junkie eyes are on billionaire Ken Griffin, who has more money than even Croesus, and who has declared he will spend it to beat the guv.

But Griffin’s political people have found no candidate as yet. I am told Griffin prefers newcomers to

old politicians.

I think the ideal GOP candidate would be a credible, law-and-order prosecutor (think Jim Thompson in the 1970s), because law and order will be a leading issue in 2022. Suburbanites are scared witless by the violence in the city.

Lacking such, or a consolidation of Sullivan, Schimpf, Rabine into one candidacy, Bailey wins the primary, at least as of right now. But in the November general election, Bailey would likely be the darling of downstate, while falling flat in the ’burbs, winning an enthusiastic 40 percent of the total vote.

So, a possible doofus at the top, with Bailey just below, could spell disaster for other races down the long ballot, because of depressed GOP turnout. For example, I have

an interest in two important Illinois Supreme Court races, located in mostly suburban districts. But voters do not go to the polls, or not, because of unknown Supreme Court candidates. Thus, these competitive races, found at the very bottom of the ticket, could be determined at the top of the ballot.

Illinois GOP leaders should get on their knees to topdrawer citizens who might be willing, out of a sense of noblesse oblige, to take on a likely losing U.S. Senate race, and hope that a candidate who can appeal in the suburbs will emerge from the gubernatorial primary.

Join St. John’s Lutheran Church on Sunday, Dec. 19, at 9 a.m. for worship for the Fourth Sunday of Advent.

The worship service will be led by Pastor Shellie Knight.
