This eccentric retelling is what Dr. Seuss might come up with if he had his way with the time-tested Jane Austen classic.

When Elizabeth meets the handsome Mr. Darcy (Rowen Schulz), will his pride and her prejudice keep them from riding off into the sunset on Honk Jingle Horses? Not if Thing 1 (Payton Scace) and Thing 2 (Michael Decker) have anything to say about it!

Orangeville Broncos storms to a first round shutout SPORTS WRITER

The Orangeville Broncos finished their regular season with a 6-3 overall record, which earned them the ten seed in the Class 1A North playoff bracket.

They were forced to travel to Chicago last Saturday, where they faced off with the seven seed in the 7-2 Chicago Hope Academy Eagles.

The Broncos wouldn’t let the lower seed deter them from getting the win on Saturday, however. Their defense has gotten them through a lot of tough games this season, and round one was no different. They allowed an average of seventeen points per game in the regular season, and they wouldn’t let the Eagle’s offense even sniff that number.

The first half featured a tight matchup as the only score came by way of a one-yard touchdown run by Garret Rodebaugh at the 6:43 mark of the first quarter. The two-point conversion would give them an eight-point lead, which would hold all the way into halftime.

The Broncos really found their rhythm in the second half, however.

A Zach Baker sack put an end to the Eagle’s first drive and swung the momentum full force into Orangeville’s hands. Rodebaugh took advantage as he ran the ball twenty-three yards to the Chicago Hope one-yard line, and eventually capped it off with his second one-yard touchdown run of the night.

forced another turnover on downs, and Rodebaugh was able to find the end zone for his third score of the night.

Chase Jordan was able to get the twopoint conversion, making it a threescore game up 24-0.

Early in the fourth quarter, Jordan was able to essentially put an end to the Eagle’s hopes as he grabbed an interception to give his team the ball back.

Their offense was not finished yet, though. They were to drive down the field and knock some time off the

clock as Carter Kleckler ran into the end zone for a four-yard score with just five minutes left in the game.

The Broncos found themselves up 32-0 and they were able to finish off the shutout as the defense refused to let Chicago Hope get on the scoreboard.

Rodebaugh led the way with his three offensive scores, but the entire Orangeville defense was the real factor as they kept the Chicago Hope offense at bay all game long.

Since the Broncos had to travel for

the round one game, they will have the luxury of hosting their round two game this Saturday. The Broncos are playing great football right now with their fourth straight win, but they are set up to face off with a tough, familiar opponent this week in the Lena-Winslow Panthers. Le-Win won their first meeting this season by a score of 46-7. The Broncos will have to play much better this Saturday if they want to move on. The game will take place in Orangeville on November 9, time TBD.

By Capitol News Illinois Illinois Supreme Court Justice Lloyd Karmeier tendered notice this week he will resign his seat on the bench effective Dec. 6. 2020.

“It has been a privilege serving the people of Illinois,” he wrote in his letter, dated Oct. 29.

His three-year term as chief justice of the state’s highest court concluded Oct. 25. Chief Justice Anne Burke succeeded him as head of the court beginning the following day, and according to a spokesperson, Karmeier has requested his seat be filled by election, rather than appointment.

In an interview with Illinois Channel, he said he would not “run again considering my age.”

“I will, after I step down as chief and during this process, I will be making a decision as to whether I will finish my term, which would be in 2024, or allow someone younger,” he said in the late-September interview. “I’m 79 years old and if I stay I’d be 84 when the term ends. I don’t want to be on the court when someone might question whether or not I’m as strong or as alert or able to do the job. I’d rather go out when I think I’m still at the top of my game.”

The justice was first elected to the Supreme Court in 2004. That election, at the time, set a record as the most expensive judicial election in the country. He successfully won retention 10 years later.

During his time leading the court as chief, he helped secure its first budget increase in six years this spring. The branch will receive just more than $405 million from the state’s main checking account, a bump of about $60.5 million. That money will be used in part to alleviate costs paid by local governments for probation, court officials said.

Karmeier also reformed the Judicial Conference, which released what he called a “blueprint for the (court’s) future” at the beginning of October. It is a three-year plan that outlines a mission statement, vision edict and five core values meant to address issues affecting the branch and those who interact with it.

One of his other initiatives was continuing the Supreme Court’s tradition of “riding the circuit” about once per year. The seven justices travel to a different institution of higher education to conduct oral arguments. Students of all ages are encouraged to attend in an effort to elevate the profile of a branch of government that often does not get the same kind of publicity as the legislative or executive branches. *** COLLEGE ATHLETES: A bill allowing college athletes in Illinois to be paid for the use of their image, name and likeness passed the state House Wednesday, Oct. 30, with broad bipartisan support after lengthy debate.

Rep. Emanuel “Chris” Welch, D-Hillside, pushed ahead with House Bill 3904 despite a Tuesday announcement from the NCAA – the association which oversees most intercollegiate athletics – which said it would “start the process” of changing its rules to allow athletes to profit from their name and likeness.

During floor debate, Welch called the NCAA statement a “PR stunt” which “completely lacks substance.”

“Our bill has substance. Theirs is just a recommendation,” he said.

In its release, the NCAA said it directed each of its three athletic divisions to “immediately consider updates to relevant bylaws and policies for the 21st century.”

The board asked each division to create any new rules no later than January 2021, but it is not yet clear how or when those changes will be implemented.

Welch’s bill would allow collegiate athletes to be paid for the use of their name and likeness and would prohibit the NCAA from punishing students who take part in the payment or the universities they attend.

It would not allow for payment of salaries by universities.

“This is the right thing to do today, because it’s about equity and fairness,” Welch said, also calling the bill an “economic tool” for Illinois universities.

During floor debate, Welch took more than an hour of questioning from supporters and opponents of the bill, with many calling for greater discussion of protections of athletes and added language prohibiting unseemly endorsements, such as those from gambling companies. Welch committed to discussing follow-up legislation before his bill’s implementation in 2023.

Rep. Jeff Keicher, a Sycamore Republican who voted against the bill in committee, voted in favor of the measure on the floor. He questioned whether it would prioritize athletics over academics at the collegiate level.

But Rep. Steve Reick, a Woodstock Republican, said the NCAA essentially serves as an “unpaid minor league system” for pro sports. He said prohibiting students from profiting from their likeness outside of the sports arena is “a little crazy,” and he voted for the bill.

“If you get recruited to play quarterback at the University of Alabama, Clemson, University of Georgia, … you’re going there to further your education as a football player. Let’s not pretend, let’s not put some sort of a cover over this,” he said.

The bill passed 86-25 with three present votes and will head to the Senate for further consideration

when the General Assembly returns for the final three days of the veto session beginning Nov. 12. *** ETHYLENE OXIDE: A strict ethylene oxide regulatory bill passed the state House Wednesday, Oct. 30, with no votes to spare and promises of further discussion and potential amendments in the Senate.

Just one Republican, Rep. David McSweeney of Barrington Hills, joined 59 Democrats in voting for House Bill 3888, while 47 lawmakers voted against it and four voted “present.” The present votes were from Democrats Curtis Tarver of Chicago and Elizabeth “Lisa” Hernandez of Cicero, and Republicans Deanne Mazzochi of Elmhurst and Jim Durkin of Western Springs.

Mazzochi and Durkin were two of the leading voices on a pair of ethylene oxide bills that passed in May. Those bills, Senate Bills 1852 and 1854, provide what Republicans and Democrats have called the strictest regulations in the nation when it comes to ethylene oxide, a known cancer-causing gas used in medical supply sterilization and manufacturing processes.

They were also leading voices against Sterigenics, a medical supply sterilization company that decided to leave the Willowbrook area earlier this year amid public outcry resulting from news of increased cancer risk in the area surrounding it.

In floor debate of Mayfield’s bill Wednesday, she said the expected Senate sponsor is state Sen. John Curran, a Downers Grove Republican. He was also a leader in the effort to shut down Sterigenics and pass the regulatory bills earlier this year.

Mayfield said further debate and potential amendments to her bill were possible in the Senate, but she did not want any amendments to violate the “spirit of the law.” That spirit, she said, is not to shut down any facilities, but to move ethylene oxide use away from areas with many people.

As it stands now, the bill would phase out the use of ethylene oxide except in sparsely-populated locations in the state, and facilities in those areas would have to limit their emissions to 30 total pounds annually by 2021.

density of less than 1,000 people per square mile. But a recent amendment also would allow emissions facilities in counties with more than 1,000 people per square mile, as long as they are “at the center of a 10-mile radius within which there is a population density of 100 people or fewer per square mile.” They also would have to be at least 10 miles from a registered day care facility or school.

The Senate can take up the measure when the General Assembly returns on Nov.12, and Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s office has said he will sign it should it pass both chambers. *** FLAVORED TOBACCO PRODUCTS: Legislation banning retailers from selling flavored nicotine products in Illinois will likely come before lawmakers in mid-November, its sponsor said Tuesday, Oct. 29, after a preliminary hearing.

Senate President John Cullerton’s “Flavored Tobacco Ban Act” bill is one of six pending in the General Assembly that would ban flavored products including cigarettes and electronic vaping pods. The Chicago Democrat’s bill, however, has the highest-profile backing.

His measure would place a wholesale moratorium on the sale of any product made from or containing tobacco with a flavor added, and is targeted at restricting minors’ access to such goods, according to a news release.

One of the stakeholders who testified before state senators about Cullerton’s bill was Ruby Johnson, an activist with Parents Against Vaping E-Cigarettes. The oldest of her seven children was hospitalized with a lung-related illness resulting from vaping.

She said she favors curbing access to flavored tobacco products because “our kids’ health and safety isn’t a fight we can afford to walk away from.”

In Illinois, more than 150 people have been sickened with lung injuries resulting from the inhalation of chemicals from vaping, according to the state’s Department of Public Health. Two Illinoisans have died.

Cullerton said he was using the testimony “to decide what to do.”

fully pushed for the Tobacco 21 law, a cigarette tax increase, a new tax on e-cigarettes and the Smoke Free Illinois Act. “It’s a big bill. There’s no state in the nation that has passed it, but there are states that have gone after the vaping industry,” the Senate president said. *** SMOKE FREE ILLINOIS: A bill looping electronic cigarettes into the Smoke Free Illinois Act passed the Senate on Tuesday, Oct. 29.

Sponsored by Indian Creek Democratic Sen. Terry Link, the measure includes vapes, e-cigars, e-hookahs and other such devices in the existing ban on smoking inside and within 15 feet of the entrance to a building.

“It’s only fair that we treat these products the same way we treat cigarettes,” Link said in a news release.

“It’s still unclear what the health effects of these devices are and people shouldn’t be forced to be exposed to them in public places if they don’t want to.”

According to the Illinois Department of Public Health, more than 150 people have been sickened with lung injuries resulting from the first-hand inhalation of chemicals from vaping.

Two Illinois residents have died.

The legislation, Senate Bill 1864, passed by a vote of 41-11. It received bipartisan support.

Democratic Rep. Ann Williams, from Chicago, is the House sponsor.

It is unclear when it will receive a committee hearing or receive consideration by the full chamber. *** INSULIN PRICES: Many Illinoisans who suffer from Type 1 diabetes would see a significant reduction in their out-of-pocket costs for prescription insulin under a bill that cleared the state Senate on Tuesday, Oct. 29.

An amendment to Senate Bill 667, sponsored by Sen. Andy Manar, D-Bunker Hill, would cap the price for a 30-day supply of insulin at $100 for people covered under certain kinds of insurance policies. The bill also directs the attorney general to investigate why insulin prices have

been rising sharply in recent years.

“Illinois families deserve to have the peace of mind that comes with knowing their loved ones do not have to choose between putting food on the table and buying their prescription medication,” Manar said in a statement after the Senate vote. “The Senate just took a step toward making that a reality.”

On the Senate floor, Manar spoke of one constituent he represents who pays more than $500 a month for insulin.

The bill would apply only to insurance plans that are regulated by the state. Those generally include plans offered by small employers, as well as public plans like the state employee health program. It would not apply to plans offered by large employers that are governed by the federal Employee Retirement Income Security Act, or ERISA, which account for the vast majority of insurance policies in Illinois.

The bill also would not limit how much drug companies can charge for insulin. Rather, it would force insurance companies that would be covered by the new law to pick up a larger share of the cost.

The bill passed by a vote of 48-7.

It now moves to the House. *** STUDENT VOTING: Senate Bill 1970, carried in the House by Rep. Nicholas Smith, D-Chicago, and approved Tuesday, Oct. 29, will give high school students who are of age and eligible to vote a two-hour window on election day or 15 days prior to leave school to vote in an election.

The bill provides the school may specify the hours in which the student may be absent, and ensures that voting absences will not count against enrollment calculations pertaining to the allotment of school funding.

“We want to encourage our young people to be engaged in civics,” Smith said during floor debate. “…

Here is an opportunity for them to band together, leave school for a couple hours just like people do when they are at work, and go vote and return to school.”

The bill passed 74-40 in the House after Smith faced questioning from Republicans.

Rep. Mark Batinick, R-Plainfield, said the bill “coddles” students, who should have ample time to vote with access to mail-in ballots, early voting and polls which close several hours after most school days end. He also questioned why the bill does not require students to prove they actually voted, as opposed to just skipping class.

Smith said there are ways to prove participation in the election, such as receiving stickers at the polls, but there is no requirement for them in the bill.

“We’ll leave that to the schools themselves,” he said. “… This is another tool in the tool box for our young people to vote.”

The bill passed the Senate by a 4010 vote on April 10 and will become law if signed by the governor. *** LICENSE SUSPENSIONS: Rep. Carol Ammons, D-Urbana, passed Senate Bill 1786 through the House on Tuesday, Oct. 29, removing from state law several non-driving-related instances that would lead to a driver’s license suspension. Those currently facing suspensions would have them lifted if the bill becomes law.

“The driver’s license suspension is a draconian debt collection tool,” Ammons said in floor debate.

Ammons said those who owe money from traffic tickets will still have to pay it, but they cannot face

a license suspension because of the debt. She said a driver’s license is often a requirement for employers, and those facing suspension for being unable to pay fines are often unable to work because of the suspension.

The Illinois secretary of state’s office favors the bill, she added The bill removes suspensions for failing to pay: more than 10 parking tickets, more than 5 toll violations, or due taxes or fees to the Illinois Commerce Commission. It also removes them for theft of motor fuel.

All other penalties pertaining to the offenses will remain, outside of the driver’s license suspensions.

The bill passed the House 88-27 Tuesday and will take effect July 1, 2020, if signed by the governor. It passed the Senate 38-10 on March 28. *** CLEAN ENERGY JOBS ACT: Hundreds of clean energy advocates gathered Tuesday, Oct. 29, at the Capitol to show support for the Clean Energy Jobs Act, a carbon-cutting reform package that has stalled at the state government level amid ongoing federal investigations.

Those in attendance were part of the Illinois Clean Jobs Coalition, which is made up of hundreds of environmental groups, health care professionals, environmental justice activists, businesses and community leaders, consumer advocates, labor unions, and faith-based organizations.

The group warned of a “full cli-

USDA establishes domestic hemp production program U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue today announced the establishment of the U.S. Domestic Hemp Production Program. This program, as required by the 2018 Farm Bill, creates a consistent regulatory framework around hemp production throughout the United States.

“At USDA, we are always excited when there are new economic opportunities for our farmers, and we hope the ability to grow hemp will pave the way for new products and markets,” said Secretary Perdue. “We have had teams operating with all hands-on-deck to develop a regulatory framework that meets Congressional intent while seeking to provide a fair, consistent, and science-based process for states, tribes, and individual producers who want to participate in this program.”

Background: Later this week, an interim final

rule formalizing the program will be published in the Federal Register that will allow hemp to be grown under federally-approved plans and make hemp producers eligible for a number of agricultural programs.

The rule includes provisions for the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to approve hemp production plans developed by states and Indian tribes including: requirements for maintaining information on the land where hemp is produced; testing the levels of delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol; disposing of plants not meeting necessary requirements; and licensing requirements. It also establishes a federal plan for hemp producers in states or territories of Indian tribes that do not have their own approved hemp production plan.

The interim final rule becomes effective upon publication in the Federal Register. Following publication,

Advocates said the Clean Energy Jobs Act would result in more than 40 million solar panels and 2,500 wind turbines, which is enough to power 4 million homes, being built in Illinois by 2030. It would also aim to electrify the state’s vehicle fleet among several other provisions.

But multiple aspects of the bill, including carbon cutting by 2030 and capacity procurement reforms in northern Illinois, would benefit Exelon, the parent company of ComEd, which is the largest electric utility in Illinois.

ComEd and multiple Statehouse regulars who have worked on behalf of the company have been the subject of FBI subpoenas pertaining to state government corruption in recent weeks. The investigations have fueled speculation that lawmakers would be unwilling to move any legislation forward that would benefit the company.

While several of the bills’ Democratic supporters spoke at the Capitol rally Tuesday, they did not give a legislative schedule update on a potential hearing for the bills, which continue to await committee assignments.

ELLINOIR M. MUSSER Ellinoir M. Musser, age 93 of Stockton, IL passed away Sunday, Oct. 27, 2019 at Walnut Acres in Freeport.

She was born in Lena, IL on March 22, 1926 to the late Frederick and Frida (Lewin) Nickel. Ellinoir married Ora Musser on April 28, 1946. Ora passed away on April 25, 1990.

As a young girl, she had worked at Wadams Grove Hatchery. She then worked at Atwoods for 12 years and farmed with her husband.

Ellinoir enjoyed baking, canning and cooking.

She is survived by her sons, Brad (Kim) of Stockton, Bruce (Molly) of Stockton, Brent of Stockton, and Karl (Amy) of Stockton; her daughters, Karen (Richard) Schaible of Freeport, Kathy Musser of Savanna, Joan (Bob) McKinstrey of Nora, Brenda (Tim) Dayton of Stockton; her son-in-law, Jim Corp; her daughter-in-law, Marge Musser; her 21 grandchildren and several great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter Jan Corp, son Brian Musser, three sisters, and eight brothers.

The visitation and funeral service were held on Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2019 at Hermann Funeral Home in Stockton. Interment will take place at Ladies Union Cemetery in Stockton. A memorial fund has been established. Condolences may be shared at www.hermannfuneralhome.com.

LOIS VIRGINIA MAASS Lois Virginia Maass, 93, of Walworth, WI, formerly of Lena, IL, died Sunday, Oct. 27, 2019, at Golden Years in Walworth, WI. She was born on Oct. 5, 1926, in Lena to Albert & Effa (Uecker) Koppean.

She married the love of her life,

Alvin Herman Maass, on Oct. 6, 1946, in Lena. He passed away on Dec. 11, 1978.

Lois’ working life consisted of life on the farm, being a nurses’ aid at the Lena Hospital during her high school years, life on the farm after marrying Alvin, and then after moving to town in 1962, she was employed for 33 years at Noller’s Royal Blue. After retiring she used her time and talents doing lots of volunteer work. She was a lifelong member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Lena, and served for years as an organist, active with the St. John’s Women’s Society, many Bible Study groups, My Friend’s Closet, the Friendship Center & Meals on Wheels. She enjoyed sewing, gardening and playing the piano and organ.

Lois is survived by one daughter, Jean (Jerry) Katzenberger of Delavan, WI, four grandchildren, Jason Katzenberger of Darien, WI, Jeffrey (Jillian) Katzenberger of Delavan, WI, Mary Beth (Jason) Waychoff of Delavan, and Andrew (Janessa) Katzenberger of Madison, WI and great-grandchildren, Jason Katzenberger Jr., Troy Katzenberger, Jaelyn Katzenberger, Jenna Katzenberger, Lacey Waychoff and Sawyer Katzenberger and many dear friends and relatives.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and infant sister, Marian.

Funeral services were held on Friday, Nov. 1, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Lena with Rev. Rick Bader officiating, with visitation until time of service. Burial will be in Lena Burial Park.

In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established in her memory for St. John’s Lutheran Church.

MICHAEL WILLIAM JANSSEN Michael William Janssen, age 36 of Shannon, IL passed away Sunday, Oct. 27, 2019 at Swedish American Hospital after a yearlong battle with cancer. He was born on April

19, 1983 in Freeport, IL to the late Norman and Cheryl (Kelchner) Janssen.

Michael was a graduate of Eastland High School. He was a member of Zion Community Church in Pearl City. Michael worked on the family farm and for Sloan Implement in Lanark for the last three years. He enjoyed farming, collecting toy tractors, and watching the Chicago Cubs.

He is survived by his children, Elizabeth and Brooklyn Janssen; his three brothers, Scott (Julie), David and Tim (Nicole Frampton); his sister, Rebekkah (Kevin) Gors. He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.

The funeral service was held on Thursday, Oct. 31, at Zion Community Church on Pearl City. There was a visitation on Wednesday, Oct. 30 also at the church. Interment will take place at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Freeport.

RONALD G. TOEPFER Ronald G. Toepfer, 85, of Apple River, IL, passed away surrounded by his family at the Williams Middleton VA Hospital in Madison, WI on Monday, Oct. 28, 2019. He was born on Oct. 2, 1934 in Wauwatosa, WI to Albert and Ruth (Leuzinger) Toepfer. Ronald was married to Margery Brandt, and together they had four children, then he married Farrada Toepfer, together they had one son, then he married Jane Lee on April 20, 1968 in Scales Mound at the United Methodist Church, together they had five children. Ronald served our country in the U.S. Army from 1954-1960. He was a sharp shooter, cook, and specialized in aircraft recognition. After his time in the U.S. Army, Ronald went on to enjoy many interests and accomplishments. He was Vice President of Package Production Inc, a Production Supervisor at Pasquali, and a partner in GBT where he designed and built articulated and oscillating

tractors. Ronald was an owner/operator of several small businesses, a maintenance supervisor at Galena Territories, and a cook at the DeSoto House, Memories in Nora, IL, and for Meals on Wheels. Ronald was truly a jack of all trades.

Ronald enjoyed photography, especially photographing nature and weddings. He loved target shooting, carpentry and airplanes; his favorite being the F-86 Sabre. He enjoyed listening to country music, dancing, and parties, but especially enjoyed spending time with his family.

Survived by his wife; Jane of Apple River, ten children; David (Mary) Toepfer of Pearl City, Brian (Judy) Toepfer of Freeport, Kevin Toepfer of Pearl City, Mark Toepfer of Pearl City, Jeff Toepfer of Illinois, Mary Jane (Luke) D’Angelo of Rockford, Shawn (Farrah) Toepfer of Loves Park, Dawn (Nick Field) Toepfer of Apple River, Ronda (J.R. Kingery) Toepfer of Gratiot, WI and Tim (Jessica) Toepfer of Apple River, grandchildren; Sarah (Luke), Zachary, Brittni (Allen), Jesse, Jade (Michael), Preston, Christian, Austin, Brady, Jared,Tarynn, Trista, and Thatcher, great grandchildren; Leo, Rylee, AJ, Lincoln, Maverick and one on the way, Adrian, a brother; Allan (Diane) Toepfer of Pensacola, FL., sisters-in-law; Inez Toepfer and Jean Toepfer.

He was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Alex in 2016; his twin brother, Bob, and brothers Wayne and Ed Toepfer; a sister, Myrna Lee; and a sister in law, Barbara Toepfer.

Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 9, at the Scales Mound United Methodist Church in Scales Mound, IL, where military rites will be accorded.

A celebration of life will follow the services in the fellowship of the church.

Cremation rites have been accorded.

Pastor Libby Rutherford will officiate the services.

A memorial has been established in his name.

This beautiful quilt will be offered at Calvary United Methodist Church in Stockton on Saturday, Nov. 9 at their annual Bazaar. The hours will be from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. Lunch will be available along with craft tables, baked goods, candy, caramel corn, produce and homemade jams and jellies. Available for lunch will be barbeque, brats, sandwiches, vegetable soup and potato salad along with pies and cakes.

The quilt is 96” x 98” (queen/king size) and is multicolored with blue predominating and gold trim. The theme is “Have a Little Faith” and is based on Bible stories and verses dealing with faith. 250 tickets are available at a donation of $5 each. The FHN Parent Enrichment Program (PEP), a program of FHN Family Counseling Center, recently received a $4,567 grant from the Freeport Community Foundation to support program services.

The purpose of the Parent Enrichment Program is to partner with parents in giving their children the best possible start. The program supports parents in being their child’s first

and most important teacher and has been serving families in Stephenson County for more than 30 years.

Services include home visits focusing on parent-child interaction, family well-being, and developmental-centered parenting, as well as monthly group connections and developmental check-ups for children.

PEP also has certified infant massage instructors and car seat technicians.

The organizers and beneficiaries of the Parent Enrichment Program are very grateful to the Freeport Community Foundation. The resources made possible with these funds will truly have a meaningful and lasting impact on the families in the PEP program.

Chamber Ensemble with percussion are working together to make the Highland Symphony Orchestra,” Stich said.

The Orchestra is conducted by Brandon Lamm, featuring the music of Tschaikowsky, Mussorgsky, Gounod, Dukas, and Saen-Saint. The Symphony Orchestra will feature the music of Copland and Stravinsky.

After completing the highly sought-after perfect season, the LeWin Panthers went into round one of the Illinois Class 1A playoffs feeling better than ever. Head coach Ric Arand said he had hoped to head into the postseason with his guys playing their best ball yet, and it appears they are doing just that.

The 9-0 conference champions came into round one with the two seed in the class 1A North bracket, which set them up to host the fifteen seed in the 5-4 Aurora Christian Eagles.

The Panthers have often come out swinging early this season, and last Saturday was no different. After forcing a punt on the Eagle’s first drive, it took just two plays for Sean Ormiston to break free and cross the goal line for career touchdown number 54. Counting that score, the Panthers have now outscored their opponents 150-20 in the first quarter this season.

It didn’t take long for the stout, Panther defense to force another punt and before you knew it, Ormiston was off to the races again for his second score of the afternoon. They missed the two-point conversion, giving them a 14-0 lead.

The defense quickly forced another punt and gave their offense the ball back. On the first play from scrimmage Isaiah Bruce, who has had to move into the backfield again to fill in for the injured Ronnie Valentine, was off to the races for a forty-yard touchdown run. The score gave the Panthers a 22-0 lead just nine min-

Following the Eagle’s forth punt in four drives, the Panthers were set up with incredible field position at the Aurora Christian twenty-two-yard line. It took just two plays for Ormiston to get into the end zone again, as he had the hat trick with his third score in the opening quarter. With a 30-0 lead, the Panthers were off and running as they looked to put this one out of reach early on.

The Aurora defense simply had no answer for Ormiston, who had 193 yards and three touchdowns on just nine carries, and three quarters of football remaining. Bruce also forced a problem for the Eagle defense, as he busted into the end zone for his second score of the first half to put his team up 38-0.

With the Panther defense strangling the life out of the Aurora Christian offense, Le-Win was able to keep the ball in the hands of their offense for a majority of the first half.

The combination of the lockdown defense and high-powered offense allowed them to set their eyes on the running clock as we neared halftime.

Quarterback Luke Benson was able to do just that, as he connected with Marey Roby for a touchdown pass to go up 46-0.

That would be the final score of the game for the Panthers, but it would not matter as it took just two quarters of football for them to put this one away. The Panther defense held Aurora Christian to just eighty yards of offense in the first half, while they racked up 323 yards of their own on the ground game alone. Ormiston provided a majority of that with 230 yards, which is his new career high.

The second half went by quickly with the running clock. The Eagles were able to get on the board with a short touchdown pass to ruin the hopes for a shutout by the Le-Win defense. The clock hit zero on a

blowout, 46-7 victory for the Panthers, and it’s safe to say they are playing their best ball right now.

Ormiston averaged a whopping fifteen yards per carry, had three scores, and even grabbed an interception. Bruce racked up two scores and 78 yards on just seven carries.

Roby tacked on 47 rush yards of his own, and Jack Setterstrom was right behind him with another 45. The Panthers combined for a total 420 rush yards on Saturday.

Following the dominant performance, the Panthers are set up to face off with a familiar opponent in the Orangeville Broncos for round two of the playoffs. This will be the first time the Broncos and Panthers see each other in the postseason. The round two game will take place this Saturday, Nov. 9, in Orangeville.

FHN gives back to Orangeville schools

FHN’s series of sports physical clinics, held throughout the spring and summer, helped save time and hassle for many area parents, and raised more than $16,000 for area schools. All proceeds from the $20 physicals are donated back to the schools by FHN. A total of 21 sports physical clinics were held at FHN offices across northwest Illinois this summer, providing 825 physicals and raising $16,500 to donate back to 14 area schools.

A total of 60 students got their sports physicals at recent clinics held at the FHN Family Healthcare Center – Orangeville, raising $1,200 for the Orangeville School District.

1 T. honey 1/8 t. salt 1/8 t. pepper In a large bowl, combine spinach, Arugula, and Brussels sprouts. Drizzle with ½ cup Creamy Red wine dressing and toss. Sprinkle with walnuts. Serve immediately with remaining dressing.

Dressing: In a medium bowl, whisk together all ingredients. Serve immediately or refrigerate for up to 2 days. Whisk again before using.

One of my readers doesn’t like spaghetti squash because she thinks it doesn’t have very mush flavor. Making this recipe will certainly change that. This squash recipe is full of interesting ingredients especially if you are a fan of southwestern cooking. Enjoy this squash recipe with a whole lot of flavor!

This last week we had the most snow in October since 1917—WOW! I keep thinking that we will get early snow and then not have any after January; one of my friends said that I should just keep thinking that. Another told me I was delusional. Maybe by the time this column comes out the snow will be gone. This week the Tex-Mex Stuffed recipes are for colder weather. It is a good thing I included a soup recipe.

Spaghetti Squash This healthy salad has all the good 1 medium spaghetti squash, things for a well-rounded side. I like trimmed, halved, and seeded to use baby spinach; I also think you 2 T. olive oil, divided could use spring mix if you didn’t 1 t. salt want to use all Arugula. Stir in beans, tomatoes, and chilies, and taco seasoning; cook for 1 minute. Stir in squash flesh and cilantro. Divide mixture between reserved squash shells; top with cheese.

Broil until cheese is melted, about 5 minutes. Garnish with cilantro.

If you are looking for a different kind of chicken soup, this recipe takes a main dish recipe and turns it into a soup. You can make it easy to prepare by using rotisserie chicken and deli ham.

Chicken Cordon Bleu Soup

2 T. butter 2 T. oil 1 small head cauliflower, coarsely chopped 1 medium onion, chopped 1 garlic clove, minced 3 T. flour 2 C. chicken broth 2 C. shredded cooked chicken 3 C. half-and-half cream 1 C. finely cubed fully cooked ham 1 T. Dijon mustard 1 t. salt ½ t. pepper 2 C. shredded Swiss cheese In a large saucepan, heat butter and oil over medium high heat. Add cauliflower and onion, and cook and stir until crisp tender, 8 to 10 minutes.

Add garlic and cook for 1 minute longer. Stir in flour until blended, gradually whisk in broth. Bring to a boil, stirring constantly; cook and stir until cauliflower is tender, 12 to 15 minutes.

Cook ravioli in the boiling water as the label directs. Reserve ¼ cup of cooking water, then drain. Add the ravioli and the reserved cooking water to the sauce; stir to coat.

Transfer half of the ravioli and sauce to a 9 x 13 broiler-proof baking dish.

Sprinkle with ½ cup mozzarella. Top with the remaining ravioli, sauce and mozzarella. Microwave the remaining tablespoon of butter in a small microwave safe bowl until melted. Stir in grated garlic and breadcrumbs; season with salt and pepper.

(3.4 oz.) instant caramel Preheat the broiler Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Melt 2 pudding mix 2 eggs, room temperature T. butter in a large skillet over medi½ C. unsweetened applesauce um-high heat. Add the onion, mush1¼ C. flour rooms, ¼ t. salt and 1/8 t. pepper.

Stir in chicken, cream, ham, mustard, salt and pepper; heat through. Stir in cheese until melted.

Are you looking for an easy main dish with a lot of flavor? This ravioli casserole is easy to get on the table for a quick supper. If you want a little zest, use Italian sausage. There are several different kinds of frozen or refrigerated ravioli that you can use. The only bad side of this recipe is for people who don’t like mushrooms; they are out of luck.

Ben & Gail Mayer (Nee: Fluegel) were married on Nov. 21, 1954 at Salem Evangelical Church near Eleroy. Ben is retired from Lena State Bank and Gail is retired from the Rockford office of Federal Probation and Parole.

Life-long residents of Lena, the couple had two children: a daughter Rhonda Coyier (Don) of Madison and a son (deceased) in 1979, two Granddaughters Deanna Heid and Kelsey Pearson, five Great-Grandchildren Braelyn, Gianna & Otto Heid, Theodore and Viviana Pearson, one Step Grandson Chris Coyier (Amanda) and Ruby Coyier of Bend, Oregon.

The Jo Daviess Conservation Foundation (JDCF) is accepting nominations for the Nancy Hamill Winter Conservation Leadership Award, which will be presented at the Foundation’s annual meeting in early 2020. An individual, organization, governmental entity, educational institution, or business that has demonstrated creativity and/or leadership in the preservation, restoration, or stewardship of natural areas and/or Native American cultural resources, or has a strong history of promoting an understanding of the natural world in Northwest Illinois, particularly Jo Daviess County, is eligible. Nominees may have also shown financial leadership that supports land conservation. Priority will be given to nominees with distinguished lifetime accomplishments and impact made in the service area of the Foundation. JDCF’s Executive Committee seeks nominations annually beginning in November each year and uses the above criteria to make its selection. Nominations are due by Dec. 31, 2019. I don’t want to hear Christmas music until after Thanksgiving. I need to put away my Halloween and get my turkeys out. Our street didn’t have as many trick or treaters out this year, but we did have plenty. They had to wear their winter coats over their costumes.

I had a wonderful neighbor who shoveled my sidewalk off; the sun took care of the driveway. I was glad that the sidewalks were somewhat clear for the little treaters as they went from house to house. Once again I want to send my appreciation to the Village of Lena for the police presence on West Mason and Oak Street. I think it helps keep the traffic slower. Thanks again for our police presence that kept all

On Thursday, Nov. 7, Monroe Clinic is hosting an art reception featuring Adria Kaufman.

Kaufman is an accomplished artist from Madison, WI. Longtime Lena-Winslow track coach Pete Brown has been selected by the Illinois Track and Cross Country Coaches Association for induction into the Hall of Fame.
