Lena Business and Professional Association announces Christmas Walk schedule The LBPA Hometown Christmas will celebrate “Miracle on Main.” We are planning a lighted parade with a luminary walk from 6 to 8:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 1. The parade will begin at 6 p.m. starting at the Village Hall, down Main Street, crossing the railroad tracks, and continuing up Railroad Street and tentatively ending at Lobdell Transportation. During the parade we will have a tree lighting ceremony on the square downtown as Santa passes by. A window decorating and a yard

decorating contest will be held in conjunction with this themed event. Entry forms are included and must be turned in by Nov. 27. Judging will take place on Nov. 30th and Dec. 1. A Community Giving Tree will be at Fluegel’s. This tree will consist of items listed on an ornament for children and needs for community families. Everything will be in code without names visible. Response for the giving tree last year was abundant. We are also having a Teacher Tree for teacher’s needs at Lena-Winslow

Schools. With all the budget cuts, classroom needs have been noted and we have volunteered to help. Children may visit Santa at Citizens State Bank, following the parade until 8:30 p.m., or deposit letters to Santa in his mailbox in the bank lob-

by. Their letters will be answered by Santa. He is so excited to hear from all the children in the area. The Lena United Methodist Church will be hosting a Cookie Walk again this year and a Chili Supper. The Lena Library is hosting a Fam-

ily Fun Night with Christmas readings. We hope you will join us in our excitement for all the festivities we have planned. Remember we all need to work together for the better of Lena. It’s a great place to live.

Panthers play for state title REPORTER

The Panthers did what a prospective Champion must do on Saturday afternoon. They played great defense and let the running game carry it to a very important win. Lena-Winslow defeated Forreston 12-8 in the Class 1A Semi-Final. The win propelled the Panthers into the IHSA Class 1A State Championship this Friday in DeKalb at 10 a.m. against Tuscola. Rahveon Valentine was dutifully grounded in Saturday’s game. He carried the ball 26 times and picked up 107 yards through his efforts. However, he didn’t score. It’s not something that has happened much this season. The twelve points scored was the lowest Lena-Winslow has put up all year as well. The next lowest total was in week two when they faced the Forreston Cardinals for the first time this year. They scored 28 in the two-touchdown win back on September 1. Lena-Winslow has averaged 55 points or more for the playoffs. They scored 55 in the season closer over Dakota on Oct. 20, 55-7, in week nine. When the playoffs started they put up 55 against Stark County and then dropped their average briefly with a 49-point outburst in the Class 1A second round meeting with Milledgeville. In the Class 1A Quarterfinal the Panthers scored 67 points in a battle with the NUIC-Upstate’s last remaining representative, Freeport Aquin. The Nov. 11 win opened the door to this past weekend’s Semi-Final

victory against the defending State Champion Cardinals. The State’s top-ranked team plays for the 1A crown now and will face a strong team with a long history of success. Lena-Winslow plays Tuscola in the Class 1A Title Game this Friday morning. The Warriors are an historic program with a recent history of season-extension success. They’ve only lost five games since the 2014 school year, including back-to-back one loss seasons in 2015 and 2016. They’ve been playing football a long time and could be considered one of the founding members of Illinois High School Football. In 1895, the first season-long football statistics were set in stone and reported to the State’s High School Sports Governing Council. Tuscola plays out of the Central Illinois Football Conference and is undefeated, similar to Lena-Winslow. They have scored 639 points and given up only 169 in those contests. The Panthers still get the slight edge. They have scored 654 points this year and have given up 166. The difference is a s couple scores here and a partial stop there, but it is substantial when you consider which teams Lena-Winslow had to beat to put itself in this position now. As far as the numbers show, the Class 1A State Championship Game between the Lena-Winslow Panthers and the Tuscola Warriors, does seem to reflect the two best teams in the State of Illinois this year. The Championship Trophy could deservedly go to either. Go Panthers!

American Education Week

COURTESY PHOTO Shopper’s Guide

Lena-Winslow Elementary School celebrated American Education Week this week with the theme: “A Star Spangled Celebration.” Students wrote on small stars what they like about our school, and then the stars were attached to the large flag in the picture. Each teacher in the school had a large star & students wrote notes and compliments on the stars which were also displayed in the hall. On Wednesday they presented the support personnel with star shaped cookies to show them what an important part of the school they are and how much we appreciate them. Students brought in canned goods for the food pantry and pet items for the local shelter, and wore Panther gear to show our school pride and support for the football team’s great success.
