LeWin football dominates 1A Quarterfinals REPORTER

The LeWin football team traveled to Aurora last Saturday to face off with the 9 seed in Aurora Christian. After trading punts to start the game, Parker Magee was able to force an Aurora turnover when he punched the ball out with 7:37 left in the first quarter giving the Panthers great field position. Isaiah Bruce was able to take advantage of the turnover with a 14yard touchdown. Cade Benson was able to find Parker Magee for the two-point conversion giving LeWin an eight-point lead with 5:16 left in the first. Aurora Christian would take the following kickoff back for a touchdown, going 79 yards to bring the game within one with a score of 8-7. The Panthers were quick to answer, however. Sean Ormiston found the end zone for the first time Saturday with a 17-yard run of his own, giving the Panthers a 15-7 lead late in the first quarter. Early in the second quarter Isaiah Bruce was able to set himself up for another score. Following a 20 yard run which put the Panthers in the red zone, Bruce capitalized with a threeyard plunge into the end zone, putting LeWin up 22-7 with 8:28 left in the second quarter. Aurora quickly responded with a touchdown of their own, this time with a 17-yard touchdown pass to bring the game within eight with 6:52 left in the second. A 26-yard run from Keegan Gyland setup Ormiston for his second score of the day. This time going 44 yards for the score, giving LeWin a 29-14 lead. The Panther defense was able to force their second turnover of the day when Hudson Humphrey intercepted a pass giving LeWin great field position once again. The Panthers were unable to take advantage, however, as the Aurora defense managed to keep them out of the end zone. Aurora would miss

a field goal near the end of the first half and LeWin would kneel the ball to head to halftime up by 15. Sean Ormiston finished the first half with 124 yards and two scores on the ground while Bruce totaled 85 yards and two scores of his own. The Panthers would start the second half with the ball looking to expand their lead, and they would do just that. After a 29-yard Ormiston run QB Cade Benson was able to sneak it in from the one yard line to put the Panthers up 36-14 early in the third. Hudson Humphrey would snag his second interception of the day on Aurora’s following drive. Keegan Gyland would bust the game wide open late in the third with a 1 yard touchdown run. A missed extra point would leave the Panthers with a 42-14 lead as they looked to seal the deal on their victory. Gyland wasn’t finished yet, however. On the next LeWin drive the senior was able to turn on the jets for a 35-yard touchdown run. The twopoint conversion from Isaiah Bruce put the Panthers up 50-14. The 35yard scamper put LeWin over 400 total rushing yards for the day. Ronnell Valentine was able to force the fourth Aurora turnover on the day with an interception of his own in the fourth quarter. Following the interception Keegan Gyland burst through the line for a 28-yard run which put him over the century mark last Saturday. Valentine was able to capitalize off his INT with a 7-yard touchdown run putting the score to 57-14 LeWin. The Score would also enable the running clock for the remainder of the fourth quarter. A goal line stop from the Panther defense would finish off the second half shutout as LeWin put up 28 unanswered points and ran the clock out on their quarterfinals victory. The Panthers will host the sixseed Forreston for their opportunity to head to the 1A State Championships.

Eastland-Pearl City Rolls through quarter finals

By Trent Scheidegger REPORTER

The EPC football team traveled to Orion to face off in the 2A Quarter Finals Last Tuesday. It was the battles of the undefeated, as each team came in holding a zero in the loss column. Jayden Kempel got the Wildcats off to a quick start once again, when he took the second play from scrimmage for a 36-yard run to put EPC in the red-zone almost immediately. Quarterback Braden Smargiassi was able to finish off their first drive with

a 1-yard touchdown run, giving the Wildcats a 7-0 lead with 8:46 left in the first quarter. Senior Travis Spong snagged an interception to put Orion’s first drive to a halt. Just when it seemed the Wildcats would expand their lead, a holding call erased a Jared Kempel run, and eventually led to an EPC punt. It was then that each team’s defense took over, as the teams would trade back to back punts on consecutive drives. Jayden Kempel wouldn’t be denied his production, however,

as he found himself eclipsing the century mark in rushing yards early in the first half. After Jayden found the end zone for the second time on Saturday, this time with a nine-yard scamper, the Wildcats would miss their extra point. EPC held a 13-0 lead with 2:47 left in the first half. Orion was poised to retaliate as they drove down the field in the final two minutes of the first half until once again, the EPC defense came
